학생들의 외모에 대한 인식과 자아개념

Abstract

청소년들이 자신을 스스로 어떻게 판단하고 평가하는가 하는 것은 청소년의 사회적인 적응과 발달과업의 수행에 영향을 주는 한 중요한 변인이다. 즉, 자아정체를 탐색하고 자아상을 정립해 가는 시기인 청소년기에 있어, 자신에 대한 생각은 청소년의 주관적인 삶에서 중심적인 역할을 하며 사고, 감정, 행동 등 모든 영역에 결정적인 영향을 미친다. 따라서 이 시기의 자기 스스로에 대해 가지는 긍정적인 생각은 매우 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 학생들의 외모에 대한 만족도를 중심으로 그것이 자아개념에 미치는 영향을 조사해 봄으로써 외모에 대한 지나친 편견으로 인한 학생들의 비뚤어진 자아상을 일깨우고 외모에 대한 올바른 인식과 긍정적인 자아개념을 형성하고자 하였다. 연구 방법으로는 문헌연구와 설문조사 방법을 병행하였으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 학생들의 외모에 대한 만족도는 남학생들이 여학생들 보다 자신의 외모에 대해 더 높게 평가하고 있었다. 하지만 자아개념 각 영역에서 남녀 차이는 크게 나타나지 않았다. 그리고 자신의 외모만족도가 높을수록 높은 자아개념을 나타냈고 외모에 대한 만족도와 자아개념은 정적 상관관계를 보였다. 외모에 대한 여학생들의 남학생보다 낮은 만족도는 여학생들이 사회의 문화적 관념을 기준으로 한 객관적 평가에 더 민감한 것으로 그 기준으로 자신의 외모를 판단하여 그에 일치하지 않는 경우 몸에 대한 부정적인 평가를 함으로써 자신을 평가 절하함을 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있겠다. 결과에서 살펴본 바와 같이 요즘 학생들의 지나친 외모에 대한 관심과 외모를 중요시하는 사회적 분위기는 자아정체를 탐색하고 자기에 대한 개념을 형성해 가는 시기의 청소년기에 자기에 대해 가지는 전반적인 느낌인 자아개념에 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 학생들에게 청소년기의 남녀 신체적 특성과 발달을 올바르게 인식시키고 자신의 몸을 남에게 보이기 위한 하나의 대상물로 보지 말고, 획일화되고 상품화된 외면적, 정적인 아름다움이 아닌 내면의 표정과 동작이 어우러진 개성의 아름다움을 추구할 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다. 이는 올바른 가치관을 정립하는 중요한 시기인 청소년들에게 건전한 자아성장과 나아가서는 민주시민의 양성을 위해 필요할 것이라 본다.; The way that juveniles judge and evaluate themselves affects their adaptation ability to the society and goal-achieving ability as a significant variable. During this period of juveniles when young people search for self-identification and establish their self-existences, self-appraisal plays an important role in subjective lives of juveniles, moreover, has a decisive influence on their thoughts, emotions, and actions. Therefore, they should have more positive way of thinking. This study examined how young people judge their appearances with subjective views, and how those judgments influence on their self-conceptive notions. The final aims of this study are to correct the distorted notions they have concerning their self-concepts too much depending on appearances and to help them to form more positive, affirmative self-concepts and have right ways of thinking of appearances. Documentary researches and a questionnaire survey were conducted at the same time. The study results are as follows; As for self-appraisal toward appearances, male students had a higher appraisal level about the appearance than female students did. However, any differences were not found in the area of self-concept. The more they were satisfied with their appearances, the higher were their appraisal level toward themselves. A static correlative relationship was shown between self-appraisal with appearances and self-concepts; the higher were their self-appraisal levels toward external features, the higher were their self-conceptive levels. When female students had a lower appraisal level toward self-appearances than male students did, it indicated that females showed more sensitive reactions against the objective appraisals decided by the society s cultural concepts than males did. In other words, in case that their appearances are not corresponding to those cultural standards, they appraised their body shapes very negatively, which directly led to under-evaluation in self-concepts. As in the above, too much interest in external appearances had a great effect on young people s self-appraisal that is usually done during the period of juveniles when young people establish self-concepts and search for their self-identify. Therefore, young people should correctly understand physical characters and development processes of both male and female persons, lest they regard their bodies as simple objects to be shown for others. Young people should be encouraged to pursue not an identical, commercialized, external, or static beauty but an individual, internal, active, and personal beauty, which is necessarily to be taught to young people who have to establish correct sense of values, develop a sound self-concept, furthermore, build a sound character.
