Pamela : 파멜라의 글쓰기를 통해 본 개인의 형성과 가정의 여성

Abstract

본고의 목표는 『파멜라』의 여주인공 파멜라가 비평가들의 평가와는 달리 남편에게 일방적으로 복종하기만 하는 여성이 아니라 자신의 목소리를 내는 한 사람의 주체로서 형성되어 있는 모습을 그녀의 편지와 저널을 통해 고찰해 보고 이것이 결혼 후에도 변함없이 유지되고 있다는 것을 밝혀 보는 것이다. 가정에서 파멜라가 하는 역할은 당대의 중산층의 새로운 도덕적 이데올로기를 반영하고 있으며 또한 이 작품이 독자들에게 읽힘으로써 그러한 이념을 형성하는데 일조했으리라는 것을 추측해 볼 수 있다. 여주인공 파멜라에 대한 찬반 논쟁(Mr. B와 결혼하기까지의 그녀의 행동은 미덕에 대한 보상이었다 vs. 그녀의 모든 행동은 신분 상승을 위한 간교한 계획이었다)을 떠나 그녀가 가지고 있는 다양한 특징들이 시대적 요구에 의한 것이었음을 살펴 보는 것은 이 작품을 이해하는데 있어서 새로운 접근 방식이 될 것이다. 본론 1에서는 한 사람의 개인인 파멜라에 대해 분석하고자 한다. 그녀는 새로운 중산층의 주체로서 자신에 대한 믿음과 확고한 도덕적 기준을 가지고 있기 때문에 Mr. B가 물질적 제안을 하며 어떠한 요구를 하더라도 굴복하지 않는다. 또한 그녀는 개인에 대한 자율성과 신분에 관계없는 평등한 권리를 주장하는 급진적인 목소리를 내며 Mr. B와 다른 상류층의 도덕적 치부를 드러내고 그것을 묵인하는 세상의 풍조에 대해서 비판한다. 그녀의 자신에 대한 확신과 감성은 Mr. B와 결혼하는데 있어서 그녀만의 경쟁력이 되고 그녀가 쓰는 편지와 저널에 고스란히 표현되어 있다. 본론 2에서는 파멜라가 쓴 편지와 저널 자체의 가치에 대해 논해 보고자 한다. 여성적 글쓰기의 형태인 편지와 편지 형식을 취하고 있는 저널은 Mr. B가 읽게 됨으로써 그녀의 내적 가치를 확인하고 결혼을 결심하는 동기가 된다. Mr. B가 권력과 경제적 힘을 이용해서 다른 하인들을 매수하여 그녀를 위험에 빠뜨릴 수 있는 것처럼 파멜라의 편지는 그의 명예에 위협이 되는 힘을 지니고 있다. 또한 글로 쓰여진 편지는 그 자체로 그녀의 행동과 미덕에 대한 증거가 되어 부모와 Mr. B뿐만 아니라 그녀를 하찮게 여겼던 다른 상류층의 구성원들에 의해 그녀의 가치를 인정 받게 한다. 본론 3에서는 파멜라가 결혼으로 인하여 하게 되는 아내, 어머니, 안주인으로서의 역할에 대해 살펴 본다. 결혼을 약속하면서 파멜라는 Mr. B에게 실용적이며 절약하는 충실한 아내가 될 것을 약속하지만 Mr. B는 그녀에게 가부장적 권위를 드러내며 아내로서, 어머니로서 해야 할 행동 양식에 대해 알려 준다. Mr. B의 요구 사항에 대해 파멜라는 순종적인 태도를 취하지만 그것을 다시 48개 항으로 정리하며 자신의 기준으로 평가하고 있다. 결혼 후 파멜라의 태도에 대해 많은 비평가들은 그녀가 수동적이고 복종하는 하녀로 되돌아 가고 있다고 분석하지만 그의 요구를 평가하는 그녀의 모습은 결혼 전에 Mr. B의 잘못을 일깨워주고 비판하던 파멜라의 모습이 가정에서도 사라지지 않고 유지될 것이라는 것을 암시하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 『파멜라』는 개인으로서 여성의 주체성이 형성되는 모습을 보여 주는 중요한 작품이다. 신분이 낮은 계층의 일원으로서 그녀는 Mr. B에 대항하여 성과 계급에 따른 사회적 불평등을 비판하는 목소리를 내고 있다. 그러나 결혼을 통해 가정 내의 여성이 됨으로써 개인의 주체성을 주장하는 그녀의 모습은 순종적인 아내상을 요구하는 사회의 관습과 부딪히게 된다. 비록 파멜라가 아내로서 남편에게 복종하는 태도를 유지하고 있기는 하지만 그것은 기존의 사회 체계 내에서 자신의 자리를 유지하기 위한 하나의 전략이며 그렇게 함으로써 남편의 권위에 도전하는 그녀의 목소리는 계속 유지될 수 있는 것이다. ; This thesis explores Pamela as not merely a passive woman but an active individual through analyzing her letters and journals and her life after marriage. Her assigned role of domestic woman reflects the ideology of the rising middle-class in the 18th century and in turn informs the formation of this middle class. This thesis attempts allows us to understand Pamela as an individual constituted as domestic woman. Chapter 1 examines Pamela s qualities as an individual in the story. She has self-confidence and a firm moral standard. Therefore though Mr. B commands her to be his mistress, offering her material temptations, she does not submit. Rather, she asserts a radical voice which insists on her equal right and freedom regardless of her status and gender. She reveals the moral faults of Mr. B and other members of the upper class and criticizes the ills of an unequal society. Her own quality and virtue allow to her marry Mr. B. Pamela s self is expressed in her letters and journals. Chapter 2 discusses what is achieved through Pamela s writing in her letters and journals. Her writing becomes a motive for Mr. B s pursuit. Mr. B controls his servants by using the power of his condition and wealth and Pamela s letters have the power to threaten the honor of Mr. B. Through reading Pamela s letters Mr. B comes to recognize her inner worth, and ultimately decides to marry her. Pamela s various virtues as expressed in her letters and journals become proof of her worth and virtue not only to her parents but also to Mr. B and other members of the upper class who come to adopt her values. Chapter 3 examines Pamela s role as wife, mother and mistress. Pamela promises she will be a practical and thrifty housewife and Mr. B informs her how to behave as wife and mother. Pamela seems to accept his demands but she makes a list of the 48 articles and provides her own commentary to them. Many critics analyze Pamela as a passive servant after marriage but this thesis shows how she maintains her subjectivity in domesticity. Pamela is an important novel because it reveals how the subjectivity of the modern individual is constituted in discourse. As a member of the lower class, Pamela is given a strong voice capable of criticizing social injustice. However, as domestic woman the novel struggles between the contradictory ideals of individuality and domestic femininity. Although as wife, Pamela maintains an attitude of subjection to her husband, through her writing she is able to maintain a voice that subverts her husband s authority.
