Abstract
North Korea regards Chosun-ot as a style of traditional dress which has been descended before the liberation. It corresponds to the Hanbok ( 韓服 ) in South Korea even though they are a little different. The purpose of this study is to understand the identity of Korean traditional dress after the liberation by discussing its historical development and social background focusing on Chosun-ot. Chosun-ot has developed as follows ; Right after the liberation, North Korea tried to get rid of Japanese style, a bad feudal habit and empty formalities and vanity in order to recover from the effect of Japanese imperialism, so Chosun-ot became simple and practical. However, cloth was not enough in North Korea due to the unstable economy caused by the residue of the imperialism and the effect of Korea war. Poor clothing habits and a change mode of the Chosun-ot in North were common in South. North Korea had tried to establish a socialist state through a restoration of the war and a magnification of Juche line from the end of the Korean war to 1960 s. People became to be interested in their clothes owing to a stable socialistic economy and politics, and tried new style due to the influence of the repatriated Korean-Japanese. Moreover, the lack of the cloth was lightened owing to mass production of the ready-made clothes and chemical materials. Based on these situations, it seems that people became to pursue beauty of their clothes instead of practicality. But still, people wore Chosun-ot as a usual dress and it was not much different from its traditional style. Since 1970 s North Korea has claimed urisik socialism , a dictatorial socialist organization, and constructed its own culture. Therefore, North Korea emphasized its own clothing habit, and its garment style developed differently from South Korea. However, the economy was depressed and light industry didn t develope well. They tried to change and open their policy through the law of industrial rationalization in 1984, but their economic depression got worse with the collapse of the worldwide socialism in late 1980 s. Therefore North Korea tried to change its policy dramatically, and Chosun-ot has changed to a modern and various style as people got interested in their clothing. But on the other hand, traditional style of Chosun-ot was more emphasized. Social characteristics of Chosun-ot based on the social background are as follows ; Fundamentally North Korea tried to produce and supply a garment through Jalip economy (Its self-supporting economy) . It continued to carry out heavy industry policy to construct light industry, but this policy caused industrial disparity, underdevelopment of the light industry, and economic depression. In that situation, since people considered Chosun-ot as expensive and unpractical cloth, they became to prefer Yangbok ( 洋服 ) as a usual dress. Furthermore, Yangbok ( 洋服 ) was taken as a usual dress as the number of female workers increased because they like the practicality of Yangbok ( 洋服 ). But school uniform and public occasion garment still keep up Chosun-ot style, and a lot of women wear Chosun-ot as a formal dress. It is true that people have preferred Yangbok ( 洋服 ) to Chosun-ot as a usual dress since 1970 s, but Chosun-ot has been descended as a surviving traditional dress by keeping a popular style which people coul d understand and like. North Korea had tried to inherit valuable inheritances selectively including traditional dress. Particularly, it tried to succeed Koguryo garment style. North Korea emphasized on the activity of the Koguryo style by connecting it to socialistic practicality. While North Korea took practical garment tradition for workers, it excluded a royal formal dress such as Dangyi ( 唐衣 ), Sranchima , Whal-ot ( Bradal Gown ). Because of this selective inheritance, North Korean traditional dress had limitations: it had limited style and became a dress for women. According to the demand for formal dresses increased, garment style changed to more ornamentally after 1970 s. Because North Korea especially tried to succeed its traditional style, it pursued only partial changes by sticking to its original style. It has changed elements such as a collar, a breast-tie, a way of adjusting an upper dress in morphologic construction, and its color to bright and magnificent one with additional ornaments. Because it tried to change the style within the limits of its tradition, traditional dress has a quite fragmentary and flat appearance. According to the sense of beauty pursuing a traditional style, North Korea emphasized an aspect of decoration. This appears to be the reason why its style is different from South Korea s. This study is confined to an assumed step because there was a limitation to access informations and were many different opinions. Therefore following studies are requested through various comparisons and a lot of data.
