Abstract
In a web-based learning environment, the student searches for information. The process of choosing the contents for study is a continual mutual process between the user and the computer. In order to make this process possible to the user, a Graphical User Interface(GUI) is helpful in creating situations similar to real life such as metaphors. Through this method we can create an environment where it is easier to approach users. The best example of this metaphor interface approach is the Macintosh Desktop. This platform is currently being used extensively for web-based learning. Most of the sites created for use by children employ this metaphor interface. Unfortunately, compared to application of metaphor, research on design for the metaphor interface is quite limited. Therefore, we must depend solely upon the experience of designers and developers. In addition, most research done until now has been done with an adult audience in mind. This makes it very hard to determine the effect of the metaphor interface on children. The main purpose of this research is to find out the actual influence that the metaphor interface has on children and to explore strategies for designing the metaphor interface. Using established research we have split the interfaces into single metaphor and composite metaphor. Through research materials gathered from these two interfaces we will try to find out the usability of the interface and the effect it has on information searching. The details of the research are as follows: 1. Is there a difference in the accuracy of information searches between the single and composite metaphor interfaces in Web-based learning? 2. Is there a difference in search times for information between the single and composite metaphor interfaces in Web-based learning? 3. Is there a difference in the usability between single and composite metaphor interfaces in Web-based learning? 3-1. Is there an overall difference in the usability between single and composite metaphor interfaces in Web-based learning? 3-2. Is there a difference in usability of different fields between single and composite metaphor interfaces in Web-based learning? In order to answer the questions posed above we went to D Elementary School in Seoul. We tested 80 6^th graders for this research. The design and development of the two interfaces used in the research were based on preexisting research and theoretical background and developed by the researcher. The validity of this design and development were verified. The modification of the developed single metaphor interface(book) and the composite metaphor interface(travel, classroom, book, natural environment) were secured through verification by specialists and surveys by elementary school children. The tools used in the experiment were also verified by experts. The experiment took place in the computer lab of the school. It was proctored by the teacher and an experiment guide. The children used both the single and composite metaphor interface. After using these programs, a test of information searching and usability took place. The results of the experiment are shown below. First, regarding the accuracy of search results, the two metaphor interfaces displayed a relevant difference(t=-2.39, p<.05). That is to say, the complex metaphor interface was shown to aid in increasing the accuracy of search results. This sort of research result shows that in increasing the accuracy of search results, the design strategy of the composite metaphor interface is preferable. Second, the time differences between information searches provided irrelevant statistical data(t=-.247, p<.05). Basically the two metaphor interfaces are nearly the same in searching times for information. Third, the usability of the single metaphor interface was found to be higher than the composite metaphor interface(t=3.253, p<.01). By fields, the largest difference of usability occurred in intuition(t=3.309, p<.01). In the single metaphor interface, there were many comments supporting intuition such as, "I was able to learn how to use it quickly." On the other hand, the composite metaphor interface received comments such as "It took me a while to learn how to use the site and it was hard to become familiar with all the uses." From this we can gather that the superior design strategy for usability is found in the single metaphor interface. In conclusion, it can be said that the metaphor interface has an effect on a web-based learning environment. Especially on information searching and usability we were able to determine the effect on 6^th graders. The results of this research seem to show that in the environment for web-based learning, the composite metaphor interface method is better suited for accurate search results. Similarly, the single metaphor interface is well suited to helping in the beginning stages and for quick familiarity with usage. In addition, designers and developers should keep in mind several things when using metaphor in developing an interface. They should think of students as the audience. Through continued pilot tests and verification by experts they will be able to produce more prudent designs and development. In order to confirm that these points are being followed, a separation of age ranges for children should be created. These stages should reflect the different intellectual development stages of children. In order to develop the correct metaphor interface system, one must research the age range for which this metaphor interface is being created.
