; The children who had been adopted overseas have grown and now in their search for their roots, and the numbers who visit Korea have increased dramatically. This is because many find that their visit to the mother country and the reunion with their birth parents have positive effects on development of self-identity. While it is accepted that it is a universal desire (In Sun Park, 1994) for adoptees to search for their roots for the development of self-identity, because of the lack of contact between birth and adopted parents due to adoptions taken place in secrecy and cultural issues different from western society, there are difficulties in searching for birth parents. While post adoption services need to be offered while equally considering the position of all three parties in an adoption, there is little research on birth parents who are the starting point of the adoption process. As there is a limit to offering fair and effective post adoption services that considers all three parties involved in an adoption without full understanding of birth parents views or thoughts on reunions, it is the hope that with this research, birth parents and especially birth mothers s wishes are better represented and future adoptions and post adoption services are better served. The subject of this research is as follows: 1. Do birth mothers desire reunions like adoptees? 2. What is the appropriate time for a successful reunion? 3. What are the reasons for reunions? 4. Is there a correlation between the fact that the adoption is known to others and the birth mother s desire for a reunion? Research participants were 170 birth mothers. Group 1: 45 birth mothers who had a face to face reunion (hereafter, reunion group), Group 2: 61 young single birth mothers temporarily staying at the shelter for unwed mothers (hereafter, single mothers group), Group 3: 64 mothers who have visited or contacted the adoption agency for asking adoptees current well being or others (hereafter, contact group of adoption agency). The research study time frame for when the questionnaire was 10 months from June, 2000 to March 2001. This researcher distributed and collected the questionnaires, and except for the single mothers living in the shelter, all were my clients. Frequency, percentage, and cross analysis was performed on the collected data. When needed, correlation analysis on variables was performed. The results of this research is as follows. 1. At the time of adoption, 41.7% of all participants wanted to keep in touch on a continual basis and it was also the highest of each group investigated. If adoptees contact the birth mothers, 91.8% of all the participants in this study respond to have a reunion, that is, 97.8% was for the reunion group, 80.3% for the single mothers group and 98.4% for the visiting agency group. Analysis of the correlation among the variables for a reunion desire shows that those who at the time of adoption wanted to keep in touch with the adoptees tend to think constantly of them and to watch TV programs about reunions between adoptees and their birth parents with more intense interest. 2. The time regarded as the most appropriate for a reunion is early adulthood of at least 19 years of age. To the question whether they are willing to meet adoptees who are elementary school students, 42.2% of the reunion group and 40.6% of the contact group responded in the affirmative. 54.1% of the single mother group, while worry because of the adoptees young age, express their willingness to meet them. Analysis of the correlation between the reunion age and the age of the adoptees in elementary school shows a rather high degree of static correlation. The birth mothers who prefer their children to be older at the time of reunion tend to defer their reunion until after their children reach the age of at least 19 even though the children of elementary school age contact them. To the question put only to the reunion group, what the most appropriate age of the adoptees for a successful reunion, the response was overwhelmingly in favor of the age of 19 or higher. To the question what the most appropriate age of the birth mother for a successful reunion, all the groups favored the age of forty or higher. 3. For the reason for giving up children for adoption, highest ranked financial difficulties (42.4%), next ranked for each others better future (39.6%) and last being a single motherhood (18.2%). For the reunion and contact group, the first reason for giving up their children for adoption was financial difficulties and for the single mother group, first ranked for each others better future at 61.1%. The most frequently cited reason for wanting a reunion was to explain why they had to send them away for adoption and to seek forgiveness. Next comes the wish to know about recent news concerning the adoptee and adoptive parents. By groups, both single mother and visiting agency group cited most frequently the wish to explain why they had to send them away for adoption and to seek forgiveness. 4. Turning to the question of how and to what extent the factor of the adoption being known to others influences the desire for a reunion, in all groups only some people know about the adoption( partial openness) was highest at 52.4%. In the reunion and visiting agency group, everyone knows about the adoption was 44.4%, 39.1% respectively, while it was only 4% for the single mother group. For the single mother group, only I know was 41%. The correlation between the factor of the adoption being known to others and the desire for a reunion expressed at the time of adoption was statistically meaningful only for the single mother group. The correlation appears a negative relationship which means that those single mothers who kept the adoption to themselves tend not to want the reunion. 5. Other important findings : Let me summarize important results gained from frequency analysis limited to the reunion group. Research participants favored overseas adoptions over domestic adoption because reunions are viewed upon positively overseas. Highly recommending reunions was 75.6% of the total. The biggest change since the reunion with the adoptee is that heartache has disappeared. The second and third biggest change is the understanding that adoption is a lifelong process and how precious each life is. After the reunion, there was regular/irregular contact and for 64.4%, reunion was held without the veil of secrecy. For 80%, the adoptive parents/adoptee initiated the reunion. The reason birth parents could not initiate a reunion was guilt and 24.4% waited until the adoptee initiated a search while 20.0% waited until the adoptee was older.-
