생상의 오르간 음악에 관한 연구 : Trois preludes et Fugues, op.109의 분석을 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 19세기 프랑스 작곡가인 생상(Camille Saint-Sae"ns, 1835-1921)의 「3개의 프렐류드와 푸가」(Trois Pre ludes et Fugues) Op. 109의 분석을 통해 그의 오르간 음악을 이해하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 작품의 분석에 앞서, 프랑스 낭만 오르간 음악의 특성과 당시 가장 독보적인 위치를 차지했던 까바이예 꼴(Aristide Cavaille -Coll, 1811-1899)이 제작한 오르간의 특성을 알아보고, 생상의 생애와 오르가니스트로서의 음악적 특징과 오르간 작품에 대해서 고찰해 보았다. 18세기 중반에서 19세기 초반까지 정치적으로 혼란한 시기의 프랑스 오르간 음악은 매우 침체되어 있었다. 오르가니스트들은 예배시간에 대중적인 곡들을 연주했으며 즉흥연주가 유행했었다. 이러한 시기에도 이전 시기의 전통을 고수해 나가던 소수의 작곡가로는 뵐리(Alexander Boe"ly, 1785-1858)와 그의 제자인 생상 등을 들 수 있다. 이러한 프랑스 낭만 오르간 음악은 까바이예 꼴의 출현으로 새로운 전성기를 맞게 된다. 생상은 생 마리(St. Merry)교회와 마들레느(La Madeleine)성당의 오르가니스트로 오랫동안 있으면서 기교적인 발건반(pedal)테크닉, 세련된 음색배합(registration), 빈틈없는 즉흥연주로 큰 명성을 얻었다. 그의 손건반(manual) 테크닉은 터치가 균등하고 매우 정확했으며 논 레가토(non-legato)스타일을 고수했다. 발건반에서는 뒷꿈치(heel)를 사용하지 않고 앞꿈치(toe)만 사용하는 바로크 시기의 전통을 이어가고 있다. 음색배합에 있어서, 그는 악보에 자신이 거의 명시하지는 않았지만 프랑스 고전 시기의 음색배합 원칙을 따르고 있다. 생상은 오르가니스트로서 큰 명성을 얻었지만 다른 장르의 작품보다 오르간 작품의 수는 많지 않다. 그는 20여 곡의 오르간 솔로를 위한 작품과 2곡의 오케스트라와 오르간을 위한 작품, 그리고 다수의 오르간을 위한 편곡 작품 등을 작곡했다. 본 논문에서 분석한 「3개의 프렐류드와 푸가」Op. 109는 1898년에 작곡되었고, 포레(Gabriel Faure , 1845-1924), 페릴후스(Albert Pe rilhous, 1845-1936), 달리에(Henry Dallier, 1849-1934)에게 헌정되었던 곡이다. 이 작품은 낭만시기에 쓰여졌지만 낭만적인 성격보다는 바로크적인 틀을 크게 벗어나지 않았다. 즉, 프렐류드는 짧은 동기들의 변형과 모방기법으로 쓰여졌으며 푸가는 뚜렸한 제시부와 전개부, 에피소드부를 포함하는 전형적인 푸가의 구조를 보여준다. 오르가니스트로서의 생상은 그의 다른 장르의 작품들에 비해 오르간 작품은 잘 알려져 있지 않았지만 침체된 시기 속에서도 유행에 영입되지 않고 이전시기의 전통을 지켜나가려고 꾸준히 노력한 작곡가였다. 이러한 노력이 있었기에 프랑스 낭만 오르간 음악은 이전 시기의 맥을 이어갈 수 있었고 다시 부활할 수 있는 계기가 되었다. ; The purpose of this thesis is to understand the organ music of Camille Saint-Sae"ns(1835-1921), the French composer in the 19th century, through analyzing Trois Pre ludes et Fugues, Op. 109. Before analyzing of the organ music of Saint-Sae"ns, both the characteristics of French romantic organ music and the organ made by Aristide Cavaille -Coll(1811-1899) are mentioned. And then, Saint-Sae"ns s life, characteristics of his style as an organist, and his organ compositions are discussed. From the mid-18th until the early-19th century, in a politically unstable period, French organ music was brought down. Organists played secular music and improvisations in Worship Services. In this period, a few composer, such as Alexander Boe"ly(1785-1858) and his pupil Saint-Sae"ns, followed the old tradition. In that situation, the appearance of Cavaille -Coll had reason to create a new era of French organ music. As Saint-Sae"ns was the organist at St. Merry and La Madeleine for a long time, he had the reputation for virtuosic pedal technique, tasteful registrations, and adroit improvising. His manual technique was fluent, deft and immaculate, and he adhered to non-legato style. In pedaling, he used toes only - never heels - tradition of Baroque period. In registrations, he was not indicated in the scores, but he was well versed in French Classic registration formulae. Moreover, he was an excellent organist, but he wrote fewer organ pieces than other genres. He composed about 20 pieces for organ solo, 2 pieces for orchestra with organ, and numerous transcriptions for organ. Trois Pre ludes et Fugues, Op. 109 was composed in 1989, and dedicated to Gabriel Faure (1845-1924), Albert Pe rilhous(1845-1936), Henry Dallier(1849-1934). These pieces were written in romantic era; however they were more like the music in Baroque era. Pre ludes were consisted of modification and imitation of short motives, fugues were represented to the structure of typical fugue including clear exposition, development and episode. Although the excellent organ compositions by Saint-Sae"ns were not well-known compared to other genre, he tried to follow the old tradition without being absorbed into the major fluency in spite of the dark music period. With his efforts, French romantic organ music could keep its tradition and resurrect the value of music.
