Abstract
; Vocabulary acquisition has become an important issue among many recent researchers. Vocabulary is regarded as another language skill; it plays an important part both in second language learning and in communication. It is one of the primary interests for teachers as well as students, that a large portion of this occur naturally through various methods in diverse contexts. Since most studies on vocabulary have been done through lots of quantitative L2 reading research, reading is one of the contexts available to teachers and students. In situations where linguistic input is severely limited, vocabulary plays a crucial part for learners when acquiring general knowledge of English through EFL reading. However, little research has shown how Korean learners understand the meanings of unfamiliar vocabulary in English. Therefore, this study investigates Korean high school students strategies for understanding the meanings of unfamiliar vocabulary. Five 2nd grade subjects participated in this six-week case study. Based on their overall English performance in school and the results of their two vocabulary proficiency tests, they were divided into upper- and lower-levels. First, a list of new words were presented to measure the degree of the subjects familiarity with those words in the passage. Afterwards, in order to find out how learners understand unfamiliar vocabulary, the researcher provided reading passages and gave translation tasks to each student in each session. Learners translation tasks were analyzed via think-aloud method and interviews with the researcher. The interviews were given immediately after the subjects completed each translation task. The results of this research suggest the following: First, learners recognized vocabulary through pronunciation and spelling strategies before trying to understand the meanings of vocabulary. However, upper-level learners as well as lower-level learners sometimes confused some words with others of similar pronunciation and spelling. These findings imply that more attention should be given to learners exact process of bottom-up as well as top-down information. Secondly, the subjects hardly used dictionaries and employed contextual guessing strategies such as syntactic strategy, morphemic strategy and combined strategy including use of adjacent words, punctuation or backgroud knowledge. Learners are advised to utilize their dictionaries by double-checking the word s meaning. Even lower-level learners were observed to use various cognitive strategies. Thus, this researcher recommends that L2 teachers become more aware of how learners understand unfamiliar vocabulary and their individual learning characteristic s. Students should be encouraged to use their most effective strategies and to improve their less successful ones. Thirdly, unlike lower-level learners, upper-level learners showed superior ability in using metacognitive strategies such as skipping or ignoring some words. Hence, students should be given more opportunities to learn to use metacognitive strategies which might compensate for their lack of vocabulary knowledge. Due to the limitations of this study, further research is required to analyze the strategies of learners who were not included in this study and to raise the learners awareness of their own strategies. Informative training or instruction for students could offer them some practical help in acquiring vocabulary learning strategies. It is also necessary to explore how learners recognize their own vocabulary learning strategies.
