동신신앙의 일고찰 : 금전대왕 신격화를 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 복수 (複數)의 동신(洞神)이 존재하는 마을을 연구의 대상으로 하여 동제의 전승모태(傳承母胎)인 마을과 동신신앙과의 상관관계를 마을의 역사적 · 사회적 변화과정과의 관련하에 분석한 것이다. 논의의 시작은 단일 동제 전승집단에서 동신이 둘 이상 존재할 경우 각 신격들 사이에 종적(縱的) 위계(位階)와 층위(層位)가 형성됨에 주목하여, 먼저 동신의 차별화 요인을 살피고, 이러한 동신의 차별화가 동제 전승형태에 어떠한 영향력을 행사하는가를 밝히고자 하는데서 비롯되었다. 이를 위하여 자연신인 산신(山神)과 서낭신, 실존했던 인격신인 김부대왕신(金傅大王神)이 동신으로 모셔지는 옛 화전민 마을을 조사대상지로 선정하였다. 먼저 제 III장에서는 동신의 신격과 상호관계를 공간적 측면-동신의 영역권-과 의례적 측면, 시간적 측면-역사적 변천과정-으로 나누어 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 동신들 사이에 김부대왕신을 상위신으로 상정하는 종적 위계와 층위가 형성되며, 이에 기인한 전승형태의 차별화가 이루어졌음을 알 수 있었다. 이어 제 IV장에서는 역사적 인물인 김부대왕의 신격화(神格化)에 대해 소개하였다. 조사대상 마을의 동신 중 상위신으로 인식되고 있는 김부대왕신은 신라의 마지막 임금인 경순왕이 신격화되어 동제의 대상신격으로 좌정하게 된 인격신이다. 제 V장에서는 이중적으로 인식되어온 김부대왕의 신격이 동신의 층위를 형성하며 동제 전승형태의 변화를 초래한 것임을 밝혔다. 김부대왕신의 이중적 신격해석은 마을의 변화에 영향을 받은 것으로, 이를 마을의 역사적 · 사회적 변화과정과의 관련 하에 설명하였다. 사회적 변동에 의해 마을의 구성에 변화가 생기고 각성(各性)마을로서 지연(地緣)을 바탕으로 한 결집력이 약화되었을 때, 마을 외부의 영향에 의한 김부대왕신의 신격재해석과 이로 인한 동제의 전승형태에 변화가 초래되었다. 마을과 동제의 구성요소들은 이처럼 유기적(有機的) 관련성을 가지고 변화하며 전승되어온 것이다. 동제의 전승모태인 마을은 공동체의 결속을 위한 수단으로 동제를 기능적으로 이용하였으며 동신의 신격, 특히 김부대왕신의 신격 역시 공동체의 현실적 목적을 위해 변화시켜 인식하였다. 이러한 사실은 전통사회에서 마을이라는 지연 중심의 공동체가 그 자체의 결속과 이익의 추구를 위하여 동제를 기능적이며 현실 지향적으로 이용해 왔음을 입증하는 것이다. 본 논문은 자체완결성을 지닌 폐쇄적이면서 독립적인 마을의 역사적 경험과 시대적 변화에 따른 동신의 변화와 분화과정을 살펴봄으로써 마을과 동신신앙과의 상관관계를 밝히고자 하였다. 이러한 작업은 한편으로 동제의 전승모태인 마을의 성격을 규명하는데 일조할 수 있을 것으로 여겨진다. 동제를 구성하는 민속사상(事象)과 그 변화과정은 마을의 역사적 경험과 사회구조에 직접적으로 관련되어 있다. 따라서 마을을 단위로 전승되는 동제의 연구는 마을과의 관련성이 전제되어야 할 것이다. 한편, 본 논문에서는 역사적 인물로서 신격화되고 조사대상 마을의 동신으로 좌정한 김부대왕신에 대한 동신신앙을 소개하면서 그 신격이 시대적 상황과 전승주체의 사회적 상황과의 관련성 속에서 변이되며 새롭게 창출됨을 밝혔다. 그리고 동신으로서 좌정한 김부대왕신이 전승집단인 마을의 단위를 벗어나 외부집단인 문중의 시조로서 역사화 되는 현상을 소개하였다. 현재 전승되는 민속사상(民俗事象)은 역사와 사회의 변화 속에서 적응하며 변용된 유기체적 성격을 지닌다. 기존의 무의미한 원형 추구의 작업은 민속사상을 과거로부터 형성되어 현재에까지 전승되는 잔존물로서 기층성과 원초적인 역사성을 지닌 것으로 파악하고, 민속이 지니는 역사적, 사회적 적응물로서의 성격과 현재도 진행되고 있는 변용 양상을 도외시하였다. 김부대왕신의 신격화와 동신으로서의 좌정, 문중의 시조로서 역사화되고 새로운 ‘전통’이 창출되는 일련의 과정은 민속의 역사와 사회의 변화를 통해 적층되고 변화해 온 결과물이며 또한 그 변용과정이 지속되는 것임을 시사하는 한 예가 될 수 있을 것이다. ; In this treatise this writer had analysis on inter-relationship between villages which are cradle of heritage of Village Rituals (“Dongje”) and faith of village geds in connection with process of historical and social changes of Korean Villages (“Maul”) where multiple village gods (Maul-Shin) existed. Where more than two village geds existed in a group of single village rituals heritage this writer noted the existence of vertical hierarchy and ranks among various gods. In this connection first of all the cause of differentiation of such village geds was studied and their level of impact upon type of village rituals heritage was examined. To this end, old village of “fire-field” where mountain god, guardian deity (Sonang-Shin) and Kimboodaewang-Shin, which was a deity of, actually existed person being worshipped as its village goes was chosen as subject of this study. In Chapter Ⅲ deific status of village gods and their mutual relationship were studied from the perspective of space (sphere of village gods). Ritual aspect and in time frame (course of historical). Though this study it was possible to discover that there existed vertical hierarchy and ranks where Kimbudae Wangshin among village gods was recognized as god of higher position and differentiation in form of heritage therefrom. In chapter IV, the deification of historical figure Kimboodaewang-Shin was introduced. In Chapter V it was disclosed that deific status of Kimboodaewang-Shin which was perceived from dual perspective caused change in the form of heritage of village gods, Such affected by change of the village thus it was explained in connection with course of historical and social change. On account of social change composition of village underwent change. When level of solidarity of village rooted in regionalism was weakened due to composition of village made up of different family names the was of interpreting deific status of village gods and from in the heritage of village rituals were changed and passed on. Villages, which were cradle of village rituals, used it as means for strengthening solidarity of village community. Deific status of village gods, particularly, that of Kimboodaewang-Shin was transformed and perceived for practical purpose of the community. And such fact proves that community being formed around regional entity known as village in the traditional society used village rituals for practical purpose and orientated for seeking sense of unity and cooperation of itself. In this treatise the writer aimed to identify inter-relationship between village and village gods faith by examining process of change in village gods and process of differentiation of such gods from the perspective of historical experience of closed and independent villages, a self-perfecting entity, and changes in time. And this research is expected to contribute something toward identifying character of villages, which are cradle of heritage of village rituals.
