Samuel Barber의 excursions, op.20에 나타난 미국적 요소

Abstract

본 논문은 현대 미국 작곡가들 중에서 신 낭만주의로 분류되는 사무엘 바버(Samuel Barber, 1910-1981)의 피아노 모음곡「Excursions(유람), Op.20」 (1944)를 미국적 문화 요소의 반영이라는 관점에서 분석 연구한 것이다. 바버는 성악가로서, 작곡가로서, 지휘자로서, 피아니스트로서 신낭만주의의 명맥을 이어받아 전통적인 형식과 조성을 고수하고 미국적인 요소를 가지고 청중에게 다가갔다. 당대의 작곡가들과는 달리 보수적인 19세기 낭만주의식의 음악을 표현하던 그는 1939년 이후부터는 기존의 고전적 형식과 낭만적 수법 위에 진보적 요소를 첨가하기 시작했다. 본 논문의 주제작품「Excursions」는 후기에 속하는 작품으로서 전통적인 형식위에 당대에 유행했던 재즈 스타일, 민속노래(folk song)와 농가무 등을 기존의 모음곡 형식에 접목한 것이 특이 할 만하다. 또한 진보적인 요소인 복 리듬(polyrhythm), 복 화음(polyharmony) 등을 미국적인 요소와 함께 결합시켜 바버의 특징적인 음악 어법으로 표현하였다. 바버의 피아노 모음곡「Excursions」는「Piano Sonata, Op.26」과 더불어 대표적인 피아노 작품중 하나이며 4개의 소곡의 양식으로 이루어져 있다. 바로크 시대에 유행했던 악장의 빠르기에 의한 춤곡과는 달리 몇 개의 악곡이 어떤 중심적인 내용에 의해서 통일성을 갖고 있으며, 미국적인 요소로서 통일시키고 있다. 제1곡 Un poco allegro는 부기우기(boogie-woogie)스타일로 왼손의 오스티나토(ostinato)음형 위에 오른손의 민속노래의 자유로운 선율이 대조되는 부기우기 리듬이 특징적이다. 제 2곡 In slow blues tempo는 느린 블루스 템포로 약박의 악센트가 특징으로 사용되었고 기존 음계에서 3, 5, 7음이 반음 내려진 블루노트(blue note)가 장조와 단조사이에서 독특한 블루스 분위기를 나타내 주고 있다. 제 3곡 Allegretto는 민속노래에 의한 일련의 변주들이 사용되었고 목가적인 선율에 복 리듬과 8:7의 헤미올라 리듬(hemiola rhythm) 등이 사용된다. 제 4곡 Allegro molto는 민속노래를 자료로 사용한 양식화된 농가무(stylized barn dance)이며 동일한 화음을 빠르게 반복하여 사용함으로써 타악기적 효과를 주고 있다. 이와 같이「Excursions」는 흑인 음악이나 민속노래 등과 같은 복합적이고 다양한 근대 미국문화를 반영하는 4개의 악곡이 개별적으로 축약되어 하나의 작품으로 엮어진 근대조곡(Modern Suite)의 형식으로 이루어진 작품이다. ; This thesis was an attempt to study the details such as American idioms of Samuel Barber s (1910-1981) 「Excursions, Op.20」. He was a composer who is classified as a Neo-Romantic amongst contemporary American composers. As a vocalist, composer, conductor and pianist he adhered to traditional forms and tonality and maintained his popular fame before large audiences American idioms. He used the musical terms of nineteenth century romanticism rather than modern music, to which he added advanced contents based on traditional forms and romantic usage especially in his post-1939 later works. This thesis deals with Barber s character and musical forms, the content of this work, and specific musical examples which illustrate the musical character of Barber for the understanding of American music of the twentieth century. Barber s piano work 「Excursions, Op.20」 is one of his representative piano work alongside his piano sonata Op.26 and consists of four small pieces. Each piece contains the unique local character of several areas of America, and the rhythmic characteristics recall the local instruments and uses their folk songs as main themes. The first piece, "Un poco allegro," is written in boogie woogie style and uses folk song melodies freely over an ostinato pattern in contrast. The second piece, "In slow blues tempo," uses accents falling on the weak beat, and the third piece, "Allegro," is a series of variations based on folk songs in which polyrhythm are used. The fourth piece, "Allegro molto," is given a percussive instrumental effect as a stylized barn dance. 「Excursions」 consist of four pieces, in modern suite form in which several traditional features and American idioms such as negro music and folk songs are gathered together as one work.
