대학생 취업준비 과외학습의 유형과 비용에 관한 연구

Abstract

이 연구는 4년제 대학생의 취업준비 과외학습 경험과 비용에 영향을 미치는 요인이 무엇이며, 특히 가정의 사회경제적 배경과 대학관련 특성은 대학생의 취업준비 과외학습과 어떻게 관련되어 있는지를 실증적 자료를 통하여 분석한 것이다. 대학생의 취업준비 과외학습은 대학교육을 과도하게 직업준비를 위한 것으로 몰고 갈 뿐 아니라, 사적 교육비 지출을 확대시킴으로써 교육기회의 평등에 관한 논쟁을 일으키고 있다. 따라서 이 연구는 과외학습이 대학에서도 확대되고 있는 이유는 무엇인지를 파악하고, 한국사회에서 과외학습이 갖는 사회적 의미를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 분석을 위해 다루어진 구체적인 연구문제는 첫째, 대학생 취업준비 과외학습의 실태를 파악한다. 둘째, 대학생들의 취업준비 과외학습 경험과 비용에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악한다. 셋째, 대학생의 개인적 배경에 따라 취업준비 과외학습에 어떤 차이가 있는지를 파악한다. 넷째, 대학의 소재지와 대학의 위계서열, 전공계열과 같은 대학관련 특성에 따라 취업준비 과외학습에 어떤 차이가 있는지를 파악한다. 연구문제를 실증적으로 검증하기 위하여 전국의 4년제 대학의 4학년 학생을 대상으로 대학의 소재지, 대학 위계서열, 전공계열을 고려하여 4학년 학생수의 1%인 3,260명에게 설문조사를 실시하여 연구자료를 수집하였다. 연구문제를 중심으로 분석한 결과는 네 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 취업준비 과외학습 경험이 있는 사람은 응답자의 48.9%로 대학생의 절반 가량이 취업준비 과외학습에 참여하고 있었다. 이들이 취업준비 과외학습의 비용으로 지출하는 비용은 대학 전학년 동안 최저 3만원에서 최고 3,144만원으로 평균 1261만원이다. 둘째, 대학생들의 취업준비 과외학습 경험에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요인은 가정의 사회경제적 배경과 대학관련 특성이었다. 셋째, 대학생의 개인적 배경 중에서는 가정의 사회경제적 배경이 가장 중요하며 부모의 학력이 높을수록, 가정의 수입이 많을수록 과외학습 참여나 비용이 증가하였다. 넷째, 대학관련 특성 중 일관되게 영향을 주는 것은 전공계열이다. 대학소재지는 어학학습 비용과 각종 시험준비 비용과 관련이 있었고, 대학의 위계서열은 실무학습 비용과 관계가 있었다. 취업기회가 불리한 인문사회계열, 사범계열, 상경법정계열 학생과 비수도권학생 그리고 비명문대학의 학생들이 유형별 과외학습 비용의 지출이 많았고, 대학의 교육여건과 취업관련 교과과정에 불만족할수록 취업준비 과외학습에 대한 참여나 비용이 증가하였다. 이 연구에서 대학생의 취업준비 과외학습 경험과 비용은 가정의 사회경제적 배경과 전공계열, 대학의 소재지, 대학의 위계서열과 관계가 있었다. 이는 가정의 사회경제적 지위가 대학생의 직업과 사회적 지위에 영향을 미칠 수 있으며, 취업준비 과외학습이라는 교육기회를 매개로 해서 사회경제적 불평등이 야기될 수 있음을 시사한다. 전공계열이나 대학의 소재지, 대학의 위계서열이 취업준비 과외학습 경험과 과외학습 총비용 및 유형별 비용에 영향을 미친다는 것은 대학졸업자들의 노동시장에서 전공계열, 대학의 소재지, 대학의 위계서열에 따른 취업기회의 차이가 있거나 적어도 대학생들이 노동시장에서 취업기회의 구조적 제한이 있다고 생각한다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 전공계열간의 노동력의 수급의 불균형이 해소되지 않고, 대학의 위계서열이나 소재지에 따른 취업기회의 차별이 없어지지 않는 한 대학생의 취업준비 과외학습은 계속되고 취업준비 과외학습 비용이 증가할 것이란 결론에 도달한다. 연구의 결과를 종합하면, 1990년대 이후 계속 증가하고 있는 대학생의 취업준비 과외학습은 대학의 전공계열간의, 위계서열이 다른 대학간의, 수도권 대학과 비수도권 대학간의 취업기회의 차이에 대응하기 위한 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 이는 한국사회에서 대학생의 취업준비 과외학습 경험과 비용은 개인적인 선택의 차원에서 이루어지는 것이라기보다 노동시장 구조와 사회경제적 구조에 의해 변화되는 것임을 나타내는 것이다. ; This study is based on analysis of practical data about experiences and costs of the private tutoring of university students for preparing employment. The private tutoring of university students for preparing employment has led university education to be toward excessive employment preparation and raised discussions about equality of educational opportunity by increasing expenditure of private education costs. Accordingly, this study is to understand the reason why the private tutoring also has been enlarged in universities and to analyze social meanings of the private tutoring in Korean society. Concrete research issues to be examined are as follows; first, actual conditions of the private tutoring of university students for preparing employment; second, factors affecting experiences and costs of the private tutoring of university students; third, factors greatly affecting the private tutoring among personal factors of university students; and fourth, difference in the private tutoring by location of university, university ranking and major. The results of analysis are summarized as follows; first, students who experienced in the private tutoring accounted for 48.9% and costs expended by those students were 12.61 million won averagely for all academic years. Second, important factors affecting experiences in the private tutoring of university students were socioeconomic background of a home and features of a university. Third, socioeconomic background of a home was the most important factor among personal backgrounds of university students. The higher was schooling career of their parents and the more was income of a home, the more increased participation or costs of the private tutoring. Fourth, a consistently effective factor among features of a university was major. location of university of a university was correlated with costs of language learning and preparation costs for various tests, and university ranking was correlated with costs of practical learning. Students majored in humanities and society, education, and economy and law, and those of low reputation universities and of universities located beyond the Metropolitan area expended costs of the private tutoring greatly due to their poor employment opportunity. And, the higher was unsatisfaction with curriculum related to employment and educational environment of a university, the more expended costs or participation in the private tutoring. Findings of this study are summarized that experiences and costs of private tutoring of university students for preparing employment are correlated with socioeconomic backgrounds of a home, major, location of university, and university ranking. These findings imply that socioeconomic status of a home can affect occupation and social status of university students and socioeconomic inequality may arise through educational opportunity of the private tutoring. Major, location of university and university ranking affect experiences and costs of the private tutoring means that employment opportunity has a difference among the university students in labor market. In conclusion, the private tutoring of university students for preparing employment and costs of the private tutoring will increase as long as discrimination of employment opportunity remains by inequality of supply and demand of manpower in major, ranking and location of university.
