마음의 자율성과 정보기능

Abstract

과학의 발달은 세계 이해에 있어 미신적이고 비합리적인 부분을 제거하고 객관적이고 합리적인 세계를 바라볼 수 있게 하였다. 달나라의 토끼는 사라졌으며 많은 기현상들은 과학적인 설명으로 대치되었다. 또한 마음의 문제도 과학의 설명틀 속에서 재조명되었다. 과학적 설명은 객관적이고 관찰 가능한 부분에 의한 설명으로 마음은 과학적 설명틀에서 두뇌나 몸의 기능으로 환원되었다. 그러므로 비물리적인 마음의 인과력은 물리적 영역 인과 폐쇄성원리에 어긋나게 되고 마음의 존재 역시 그 입지가 흔들리게 되었다. 그러나 모든 결단과 행위가 두뇌나 몸의 결정이라고 보기에는 개별적 주체에게 있어서 마음은 확실히 존재한다. 본 논문의 목적은 정보 기능의 이해를 통해 과학적 세계관 속에서 마음의 자리를 확고히 하고 마음의 자율성과 특이성을 주장하려는 것이다. 마음의 자율성과 특이성을 인정하는 것은, 마음은 도저히 물리적인 것으로 설명할 수 없다는 입장으로 마음과 물질의 속성이 엄연히 구분되어 있음을 주장하는 것이다. 이러한 물질과 마음의 속성 이원론은 데카르트의 심신 이원론과는 달리 과학적인 세계관과 상충되지 않게 수반관계로서 설명될 수 있으며, 수반관계에서 심신관계는 정보 기능 이해의 확장을 통해 심신수반론이 처했던 딜레마에서 벗어날 수 있음을 보이고자 하는 것이 이 논문의 전체 방향이다. 우선 2장에서는 과학적 세계이해 속에서 물리적인 세계와 구분되는 의식의 존재를 설명할 수 있는 구조를 제시하고자 한다. 필자는 물리적인 것을 기본으로 보는 우주의 그림에서 의식을 통일되게 설명할 수 있는 구도로 수반 관계를 받아들인다. 그리고 차머스의 비환원적 수반론과의 구분을 위해 물리주의적인 심신 수반론의 딜레마를 다룰 것이다. 필자는 물리주의적인 심신 수반론의 딜레마를 의식의 존재 유무와 관련된 전제의 문제로 이해하며, 물리주의의 수반관계 설명에 나타나는 인과개념이 그러한 논의로 들어가는 열쇠가 된다고 본다. 3장은 인과적 관계와 정보공간을 구분함으로 물리적 영역 인과 폐쇄성의 원리에 어긋나지 않게 의식의 영향력을 보존하는 심신 수반론을 재구성하는 작업이다. 차머스의 논의는 심신관계를 수반관계로 보고 정보 개념을 들여와 비환원적 수반관계를 주장한다는 점에서 이 논문의 방향에 부합된다. 차머스는 물리적인 차원과 구분되는 정보공간과 상태를 심신관계논의에 들여옴으로, 현상적 의식의 속성과 물리적 속성 간의 연결고리를 마련한다. 이것은 현상적 의식을 물리적 속성으로 환원될 수 없는 것으로 보는 것으로 심신 수반관계에서 의식의 특이성을 보존할 수 있게 한다. 또한 물리적 인지적 기능에 의해 실현되는 정보로 설명되는 의식의 측면은 과학적 세계 이해에 벗어나지 않는 심신인과관계를 설명할 수 있다. 이러한 논의는 물리주의적 심신 수반론의 문제를 해결하면서 새로운 심신 수반관계를 가능하게 한다. 그러나 차머스의 의식 설명은 현상적 의식의 부수현상론과 범심론의 비판을 피하기 힘들다. 필자는 이 두 비판이 차머스의 정보의 양면이론에 있음을 지적하며, 정보 개념의 확장을 시도하고자 한다. 4장에서는 정보 개념의 확장된 이해로부터 정보 처리기능을 하는 마음의 자율성과 특이성을 보이고자 한다. 차머스의 정보의 단층적인 정보공간을 중층적으로 구성함으로 마음의 특이성을 보존하고, 또한 세계의 중층적 이해로부터 마음의 본래적인 특성인 지향하고 고안하는 상위차원의 마음을 다루고자 한다. 정보 개념의 확장을 위한 방법으로는 여러 분야에서 정보개념과 기능을 이해하고, 그러한 정보 기능이 아리스토텔레스의 원인개념과 맞닿을 수 있음을 보이는 것이다. 4장은 2장의 논의와 3장의 논의의 발전을 통해 정보와 물질과 정신의 관계를 통한 중층적 세계이해 속에서 자유로운 마음의 자리를 만드는 작업이다. ; The development of science makes it possible to see the universe objectively and reasonably without any superstitious understanding. The lunar rabbit has been expelled, and likewise, once-unexplicable phenomena has been replaced by scientific explanations. The view of mind has also been modified and enlightened. Scientific explanation, which intends to explain everything only through observables, views the mind as something reducible to functions of the body(or brain); immaterial mind is not likely find its way in the physical world where the principle of causal closure is preserved. It is very hard, yet, to give up our deep-rooted intuition that the mind is irreducible to the functions of the body in as much as each subject enjoys its full-fledged reins of decision making. The purpose of this thesis is to make the existence of mind firm in its ontology and also to assert its unreducible characteristics through the functions of Information. It is to assert that the existence of mind can never be properly captured by physical explanations only, that by introducing Informations can the mental property be appropriately differentiated from the physical properties. This property dualism that is differentiated from Cartesian Dualism, can be rewritten by supervenience thesis without violating the scientific viewpoint; accepting function of Information makes it possible to resolve the dilemma of supervenience theory. To this end, I present in Ch.2 the framework that place the being of consciousness within the physical world. The merits of Chalmers′non-reductive supervenience theory lies in the fact that the existence of the consciousness, sui generis, is being kept intact. The concept of causality that appears in the talk of materialistic supervenience theory is the very concept that should be re-examined and, ultimately expanded. Ch. 3 deals with Information space, apart from causal pathway, as the key to the reconstruction of supervenience to encompass the mental causation while preserving the principle of causal closure. Chalmers argument, in this way, serves the purpose of this dissertation; he takes information space and information state to be the bridge between the phenomenal property and the physical property. According to this explnation, the former is not reducible to the latter, and the specific characteristics of consciousness is preserved. Chalmers′arguments, though, cannot avoid two kinds of criticisms, epiphenomenalism and panpsychism, both of which focus on the double-aspect principles of information. As a way of resolving the problems, I attempt to expand the concept of information in Ch.4, to a broader understanding in that concepts of the functions of information are assimilated to Aristotle s teaching of causalities, and also the concepts in other fields are taken into consideration. The expanded re-modeling of Chalmers theory ultimately consists in modifying his one-layered level of information space into full-blown multi-layered one, in which the specific characteristics of consciousness and intentionality is irreducibly assessed.
