; While main tradition of Western philosophy and science are rooted in dualism of Plato and atomism, Stoic philosophy of Hellenistic age succeeded to a tradition of Western philosophy through reconstructing and developing monism and continuum theory. Up to recently, Western philosophy has been under the huge influence of Plato s dualism. Besides which, the history of science has developed substantially under the premise of atomism during the last two hundred years. The first purpose of this dissertation is to consider the process how the Stoics argue against dualism of Plato and Aristotle with their immanent and monistic view. The second purpose is to refute atomism, which has theoretically grounded the science of 19th and 20th century. by setting forth dynamic continuum theory of Stoics that which will be justified in this essay. For Stoics philosophy as scientific knowledge of the divine and the human, and also has three parts - physics, ethics and logic. Among them, Stoic physics treats important problems of ontology and thus serves as a basis for the other parts. For this reason this dissertation will look into thoughts of Stoics mainly focusing on physics. Especially in Stoic physics, it is the concepts of Pneuma(πνευμα) and continuum that I mostly concentrated on. It is because with the concepts of Pneuma and continuum the Stoics criticize and refute Plato s dualism and Epicurus atomic theory. With the help of these concepts the thoughts of Stoic physics developed their ethics later, which says that the life according to nature is ethically good. The main corcern of ch.2 is the difference between dualistic structure of Platonism and immanent and monistic structure of Stoicism. Here the Stoics differentiate existence from subsistence and then maintain that two principles which constitute world is also bodies. The Stoics think that there are two principles of the universe; one which acts and the other which is acted upon. what is acted upon is unqualified sudstance, i.e. matter and what acts is the reason(λ?γο?) in it, i.e. god. In relation to the concepts of Pneuma and continuum ch.3 brings to light the dynamic structure of Stoic world. First, ch.3-1 traces the process of Stoic thought that Pneuma and matter co-extensively penetrate each other. An active principle, which termed logos or god is considered as Pneuma which is composed of fire and air. The Stoics deduce from this that Pneuma is dynamic continuum, in part expanding from its heat fire and in part contracting from its cold air. This complex motion was described as tension . The special characteristic of the motion is its simultaneous activity in opposite direction, outward and inward. With the concept of continuum ch.3-2 traces the process how Pneuma pervades through and through matter and interacts with it. Both Pneuma and matter are bodies. That Pneuma pervades through and through means that both corporeal Pneuma and matter can occupy the same place at the same time. Its possibility is guaranteed by the way of mixture(κρ?σι?). And their infinite divisibility makes it possible that two bodies, Pneuma and matter, can penetrate throughly each other. Futhermore, this chapter compares the continuum theory which the Stoics developed with the atomic theory of Epicurus. From the concept of continuum and dynamics of its parts they proceed to the epistemology of the causal nexus. Ch.4 examins stoic view about destiny(ειμαρμενη). they decribed it as an ordering and sequence of causes, since it is the connexion of cause to cause which out of itself produces anything. Besides, they think that every cause is a body which becomes the cause to a body of something incorporeal. Arguments of Stoic physics naturally advance to the divine and the human. For Stoics god is fire, power and logos. The god is immanent in all things. Thus is, whole nature is full of logos. As world, which is pervaded by substance of fire called logos and god, human being pervaded by the same way is also a bodily existence.-
