Abstract
; Darius Milhaud (1892-1974), one of the French Les Six , was a composer holding an important position in modern French music. He composed a large quantity of music extending over various genres including opera, oratorio, ballet, song, cantata, symphony, piano, dramatic works and cinema music. His music, based fundamentally on lyricism, and while making much of tradition, by developing new modes and expressions through using polytonality, neoclassicism and jazz idioms and borrowing folk music, established a completely new style, which can be considered as his great musical contribution. He was acquainted with French writers of the day - Leo Latil, Armand Lunel, Francis Jammes and particularly paul Claudel -, sympathized with their lyric sensitivity and thinking and left a good many works reflecting his lyrical compositional tendency. At the same time, as a member of Les Six , Milhaud aimed at simple and satirical music under the influence of Eric Satie, Jean Cocteau, etc. and also pursued "Everyday music" that could approach closer to the general public. When it came to song compositing, he did not take much thought for verbal rhythm but gad a preference was not considered appropriate for songs that need more delicate expression. Most of his songs, however, feature, well-polished and rich poetic expression. The greater part of Milhaud s works are adapted to words of various poets among which he liked the fully-inspired lyric poems of the 16th century poet. pierre de Ronsard and he composed several songs to his poems. Milhaud s vocal masterpiece op.223 shows his mature mode of expression employing polytonality - his most distinctive musical feature - as its basis, neoclassical compositional tendency being in evidence, and his concise but diverse expression being of much interest.
