Abstract
; In this thesis, an inside look was taken at the frenetic background to the special aspects of the famous 20th century Italian composer, Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) and his well known song cycle, . One of the most distinguished achievements of Respighi is that he devoted his life to a restoration of Italian pure art songs during the period when opera was popular in Italy. His music clearly indicates that he wanted to bring back the Old Italian style, which has its unique nationalistic and classical flavors. In addition to these characteristics, his music is mixed with French impressionism and is very eclectic. The , which consists of five songs, “I fauni”, “Musica in horto”, “Egle”, “Acqua”, and “Crepuscolo”, share the following commonalities: unclear tonality fascinating and mysterious effects from new chords, different accompaniment forms, and use of varied free rhythms. There are clear signs of impressionism in all of these songs. In this study, firstly his biography is introduced, and then his famous Italian art songs in detail. Finally, by analyzing his song cycle, , an attempt is made to understand and approach how he contributed the 20th century Italian art song genre. Respighi’s art song list, including poets who wrote the song texts, and voice parts are attached.
