Samuel Barber의 Song Cycle [Hermit Songs]에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 현대 미국의 예술가곡을 대표하는 작곡가 Samuel Barber의 <Hermit Songs>, op.29에 대한 연구분석이다. 바버는 1910년 필라델피아에서 태어나 20세기 미국 작곡가 중에서 많은 청중의 사랑을 받았으며, 연주보다는 창작에 전념해 온 보기 드문 작곡가이다. 그는 신낭만주의(neo-romanticism)로 분류되고 있으나, 결코 낭만성에만 의존하지 않고 인간적인 감정의 표현을 위한 새로운 기법을 적극적으로 수용하여 자신만의 독특한 음악세계를 구축하였다. 또한 그는 타고난 천부적인 melody 감각을 갖고있는 미국 최고의 서정주의자로도 간주되어지기도 하였다. 그는 어린 시절부터 성악 작품에 재능과 관심을 보였다. 그래서 그는 성악가와 성악곡에 대한 이해가 뛰어났고, 음악으로 시의 분위기를 높이는데 뛰어났다. 본 논문은 두 부분으로 나누어 연구하였다. 먼저 바버의 생애, 음악적 특성, 바버가 미국 음악사에서 어떠한 위치를 차지하고 있는지 살펴보고, 그의 작품 <Hermit Songs> 전곡을 분석하였다. 이 곡은 바버의 후기 작품에 속한 곡으로 작곡미상의 아일랜드의 시에 곡을 붙인것으로 전체 10곡으로 구성되며 그의 음악적 특징이 각각 잘 나타나있다. 곡 전체에 이르는 형식, 성악 선율, 빈번한 박자의 변화위에 이루어지는 리듬, 현대적 요소가 가미된 화성 등 곡 해석과 표현에 대한 성악적 연구를 해보았다. ; This thesis is on analysis of <Hemit Songs, Op.29> by Samuel Barber, one of the composers in 20th century America. Barber, whose hometown was Philadelphia, was born in 1910, and is one of the most popular 20th century composers, and an unparalled musician who later devoted himself to composition rather than to performing. He is classified within Neo-romanticism, but he did not always depend on Romanticism. He positively accepted new techniques for the expression of human emotions, and constructed his unique style of music. He is generally regarded as America’s foremost lyricist, possessing a natural gift for melody. Samuel Barber, from his childhood, had showed his musical talent and curiosity about vocal music, and had been a vocal performer, so he had the ability to understand both singers and songs. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part, deals with Barber’s life, musical style and his position in the history of American music. In the second part, and analysis of “Hermit songs” is made. This work belongs with Barber’s later works. He chose ten Irish poems which were written by unknown poets, and they show his musical properties very well. This analysis focused on melody, modern harmony, rhythmic properties based on frequent changes of beat, the songs’ form and the interpretation of <Hermit Songs> for performance. Through this analysis, the following characteristics of this song cycle were observed; First, he not only wrote songs with his characteristic lyrical melodic lines but also used leaps and chromatic progressions. Secondly, his harmony often has an atonal tendency while staying in traditional harmony at other times, and chords built on fourths are often found. Thirdly rhythmically, many songs have no time signature, and are often written in polyrhythm. Fourthly, the formal structure is built on the poem’s structure and its theme, mood, and texture are unified in various ways. Finally, each song in this song cycle carries its own unique mood and musical atmosphere.
