; The practicum can also be referred to as a process of learning while doing. Here the word learning represents an application and improvement of knowledge already obtained rather than acquisition of new knowledge. This study explores how the practicum for cultivating leaders of sports for all, which should balance doing and learning, has been conducted to date; and based on this, it explores effective ways to improve the practicum. The purpose of the study is to analyze the perception and experience of the practicum through the reality that student participants face, and formulate plans to make more effective and organized practicum. The study was conducted on a total of 144 students majoring in sports for all, and the data was collected through document research, surveys and in-depth interviews. Valuable data was gathered particularly through in-depth interviews with seven students who participated in the practicum, and six cooperating leaders. The frequency analysis method was used for the surveys whereas inductive categorical analysis were used for the in-depth interviews. The study results can be summarized as follows: First, the practicum is a process of doing and learning. The practicum of sports for all provides would-be leaders with doing and learning experience. It helps them put their theoretical knowledge into practice with the assistance of cooperating leaders in the institution and university supervisors. At the same time it encourages them to acquire and improve their practical knowledge. The practicum can also be called a process of building mutual ground between inexperienced future leaders of sports for all and experienced cooperating leaders, and of harmonizing doing and learning. In other words, the practicum of sports for all represents a learning experience where participating students apply theoretical knowledge obtained from their college education to actual situations, cultivating their expertise and capability as leaders, and developing and sharpening their aptitude and potential. Second, the practicum of sports for all has focused more on doing rather than on learning. The practicum concentrates on practical application of students knowledge and little effort is made on the part of the cooperating leaders and university supervisors to turn it into a true learning process. As a result, the practicum is characterized by passive participation and superficial management. In this study the practicum was divided into three stages: before, during and after. Before starting their practicum, the students regarded it as a process they had to go through to get grades. However, thanks to varied experiences during the practicum, their attitude changed and the practicum became a meaningful and valuable opportunity. In this study the first stage--before the practicum--should have provided a motivation to the students so that they could anticipate a whole new environment and role. Unfortunately, however, this study dealt with the first stage quite superficially. The second stage--during the practicum--offered the student leaders a variety of experiences in accordance with the specific practicum management programs by the relevant institution that handled the practicum. These institutions were fully responsible for the practicum management, based on the guidelines recommended by universities, which educate students of sports for all. However, some of the institutions could not meet the universities demands and offered training for the students without having proper programs. In such cases, the students taking part in the practicum were occupied mostly with placing things in order, observation and giving assistance and managing practice. There were two types of practicum in terms of content: instructing practice and managing practice. Instructing practice was a mixture of assistant practice and actual instructing practice. In the case of managing practice, student participants had the opportunity to carry out real duties and practice management of facilities depending on the size of the institutions and the nature of their programs. Meetings after work mainly consisted of checking daily records, making announcements and unilateral giving of instructions by cooperating leaders. Meanwhile informal gatherings relaxed relations between staff and allowed them to get know each other better. By going through a variety of processes during the praticum the students learned about the way society works in general. Although they were recognized as potential leaders and colleagues by cooperating leaders, they were viewed as a nuisance by other leaders within the institutions. During the practicum, student leaders interact with cooperating leaders, other leaders and members of the institution. Their relationship with cooperating leaders was quite close while their interaction with other leaders was extremely limited; in fact, it was strongly influenced by the students relationship with the cooperating leaders. Student participants did not have direct relationships with other members of the institutions who were wary of outsiders, i.e. the students. The participating students themselves relied on one another emotionally and built up close relationships through spending a significant amount of time together. In the third stage--after the practicum--the students all agreed that the practicum had been a tough but worthwhile experience and that they had learned much through the process. The desired results obtained from the practicum were confidence on the part of the students concerning their future career, acquisition of new methods of instruction, gaining new experiences, establishing role models, gaining inner maturity, and building up a wide range of relationships. Meanwhile, there were negative effects resulting from lack of capability and effort on the part of some students and the lack of systematic instruction for the practicum, which led the students involved to regard the practicum as a waste of time. Third, the practicum of sports for all offers unbalanced training in doing and learning . The problem of the practicum lies in the want of proper recognition of what it should be. This study shows that there was a wide gap between what students thought the practice would be like and what they actually experienced. Institutions for the practicum were selected in two ways: students selected one on their own or received training at an institution designated by their respective universities. In addition, three types of participants--the pure participant just to get a grade, along with a volunteer leader and a part-time worker, both of whom work as a volunteer or a worker while completing their practicum--coexist throughout the practicum. In terms of practicum management and instruction, the lack of systematic instruction led to inconsistent management of the practicum, lack of supervision and overly generous evaluation. Other problems with the practicum were the indifference of the university to practicum instruction and the theory-oriented education, which forced the students to face the gap between theory and practice once out in the field. Lack of cooperation between universities and institutions resulted in a lopsided practicum with one of the two playing a leading role. This has the effect of restricting the selection of institutions and superficial management of the practicum. Fourth, the practicum of sports for all should maintain a balance of doing and learning . In order to improve the practicum, all people involved in higher education of sports for all should strive to change their attitude toward it. To make the practicum student-oriented education, the selection of institutions should be more carefully carried out and differentiation made between types of participants. In the meantime, the practicum should become a goal-oriented and structured education process. Toward this end, a clear theoretical basis and objectives for the practicum should be established. Once the objectives are set, a specific and systematic plan should be formulated and implemented. In order to achieve this, this study suggests systematic supervision as well as peer coaching in which a cooperating leader and the leader responsible for the practicum program work as a team. Following this, an assessment of the students and the practicum itself should be carried out. After completing the practicum, students return to their schools and are graded based on what they have learned; as such, students and university supervisors should take some time out to share their experiences and exchange information. To make the practicum better organized, university education needs to place greater focus on practice than theory, and universities and institutions need to build a more cooperative relationship. The balance of doing and learning in the practicum will increase the quality of education for leaders of sports for all, and this will lead to higher quality sports for all.-
