영화 [Emma]이미지의 의상 디자인 연구 : 제인 오스틴의 [Emma]를 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 영국의 소설가 제인 오스틴(1775-1817)의 문학작품「Emma」에 나타난 복식과 상징성 그리고 그 미적 범주의 특성에 관해 연구하고 이것이 1996년에 제작된 영화「Emma」에서 어떻게 표현되었는지 살펴 보았으며 또한 영화에서 도입한 이미지로 여성복 디자인을 기획하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 방법은 제인 오스틴의 소설「Emma」와 복식, 영문학, 영화에 관련된 문헌 자료와 잡지를 중심으로 문헌연구를 하였으며 영화, 비디오 테입 등의 시각 자료를 참조하였고 인터넷을 통해 정보를 검색하였다. 그리고 이러한 연구를 통해 얻게 된 이미지로 20대 여성을 위한 디자인을 기획하여 일러스트와 작업지시서로 표현하였다. 소설「Emma」의 시대적 배경은 1814년에서 1815년으로 추정되며 이 시기는 복식사상 신고전주의 시대였다. 소설에서는 신고전주의 복식에 대한 구체적인 표현은 없었으나 과잉장식을 피하고 심플함을 추구하던 당시의 분위기는 찾아볼 수 있었다. 1810년대 영국의 복식을 살펴 보면 다음과 같다. 먼저 여성복은 하이웨이스트의 엠파이어 스타일 드레스를 기본으로 하여 외출용의 르댕고트, 펠리스, 스펜서 등이 있었다. 남성복은 테일 코트나 프록 코트에 셔츠와 베스트 그리고 바지는 브리치스, 판탈룬, 트라우저가 있었다. 문학작품에 나타난 미적 범주 pretty, beautiful, elegant, charming, graceful등의 표현중에서 pretty는 순진하고 아직 성숙되지 않은 해리엣의 모습을 표현했으며 elegant 그리고 elegant와 같은 의미로 쓰인 beautiful이나 graceful은 우아한 말씨나 태도까지 포함하는 미적 범주로 주인공 엠마의 미를 표현했다. 그리고 소설에는 이러한 미적표현 이외에도 등장인물을 통한 irony가 특색을 이루고 있었다. 소설에서 복식은 주로 등장인물들의 성격을 색채로서 상징적으로 표현했다. 흰색은 지적이며 고상한 이미지로 주인공 엠마의 아름다움을 상징적으로 나타내고 있으며 엘튼목사가 입었던 성직자복의 검은색은 그의 직업과 출세욕을 동시에 상징하였다. 영화「Emma」에 나타난 의상을 분석해 보면 다음과 같다. 영화에 나타난 여성복식을 보면 먼저 직선적인 실루엣의 엠파이어 드레스와 그 위에 외출용 겉옷인 르댕고트와 스펜서를 입었으며 이들 옷의 소재로 페일톤의 모슬린, 한냉사, 새틴, 레이스, 벨벳 등이 있었다. 그리고 문양은 거의 없거나 지문이 사용되었다. 특히 엠마는 흰색 드레스를 많이 착용하여 초점을 주인공에게 두게 하였는데 흰색은 지적이고 고상하며 엘레강트한 그녀의 이미지를 강조하였다. 헤어스타일도 고대 그리스나 로마의 아 라 마도나형을 모방하였고 모자는 매우 다양한 형태와 색채의 본넷을 주로 썼으며 파라솔과 긴 장갑 그리고 크기가 작고 단순한 디자인의 액세서리가 있었다. 남성복식은 테일 코트나 프록 코트와 셔츠, 베스트 그리고 판탈롱을 입었으며 소재는 갈색, 녹색, 네이비 블루, 검정색 등 어두운색의 모직이었다. 이와 같이 영화「Emma」의 의상은 전체적으로 심플한 디자인에 다양한 색채로 변화를 주어 아름다운 영상미를 창출하였으며 동시에 시대 고증에 입각하여 영화의상을 제작하였는데 여성복식에 있어서 엠파이어 드레스 위에 겹쳐 입은 튜닉 드레스나 금으로 만든 액세서리는 비교적 현대적인 감각의 것이었다. 그리고 영화의 전반적인 색채는 영국 전원을 배경으로 하는 맑고 투명한 그린색의 자연적 분위기였다. 이상에서 분석한 영화「Emma」에서 여주인공 엠마와 해리엣의 이미지를 디자인의 주제로 정하고 부제를 네오 로맨틱 메모리, 소피스티케이트 페미닌, 프리티 해리엣으로 하여 20대 여성을 위한 디자인을 제시하였다. 그리고 소재와 함께 이미지 맵을 만들었으며 일러스트와 컬러를 제시하였고 작품 제작의 전 단계인 작업지시서를 작성하였다. ; The purpose of this thesis are for the consideration of the costume and symbolism of the characters from the English novelist Jane Austen s novel「Emma」which was producted as a movie on 1996. A methods of this study are from Jane Austen s movie「Emma」, the magazines and articles which are connected with costume, English literature and movie. And the video tape, movie, internet were used to get the various informations. This study is expressed by illustration and planned design for a woman in twenties. The novel「Emma」 s periodical background is between 1814 and 1815, this time was neo classical age in the history of costume. In the novel, there was not any particular expression about the costume of the neo classical times. The English costume in 1810, woman s costume was basic pattern of high-waist empire style dress and redingote, pelisse, spencer jacket for going out. Man s costume were frock coat, tail coat, shirts, vest and bottoms were breeches, pantaloons and trousers. From the expression of the beauty in the literature, pretty was expressing Harriet s naive and immature image, and the heroine Emma s beauty was expressing by elegant and graceful way of talking and attitude. Besides the aesthetic expression, the character s irony is remarkable in the novel. The symbolism of the literature is divided costume into color. Costume is symbolically expressing the character s personality and white color is in Emma s intelligent and elegant image, pastor Elton s black suit is symbolizing his profession and ambitions for success. The analizations about the costume from the movie「Emma」are following; woman s costume in the movie, wemen are wearing empire dress with straight silhoutte and outer garment, redingote and spencer jacket. The fabrics were muslin in pale tone, gauze, satin, lace and velvet. There were almost no patterns in the fabrics and the fabric s pattern itself were used. Especially Emma had worn several times white dress and from the white color intended to stress her intelligent and elegant image. The hair style was imitated like the ancient Greek style and wore various shapes of hats and bonnet. The ornaments were parasol, long glove, small and simple accessories. Man s costume were frock coat, tail coat with the shirts, vest, and they wore pantaloons, its fabric was brown, green, navy blue, black and dark color of wool. The movie「Emma」 s costumes are shown totally simple design with various colors and same time the accessory was modern style which is decorated on empire dress by tunic dress. The most colors of the movie was clear and transparent by the gardens of England which is natural and green atmosphere. From the analizing of the movie「Emma」, the heroine Emma and Harriet s image was decided into the subject. And romantic, sophisticate, pretty ladies in twenties was suggested as a second subject. And this work was designed including image map with fabric, illustration, color and order sheets were made.
