Abstract
; This study investigated the relation between children s intersubjectivity in social dramatic play and play role types, the relation between children s intersubjectivity and peer competence. For the purpose above, the following research discussions have been established: 1. What kind of relation does children s intersubjectivity in social dramatic play have with play role types? 1-1. What kind of relation does children s structure of social play have with play role types? 1-2. What kind of relation does children s negotiation of play have with play role types? 2. What kind of relation does children s intersubjectivity in social dramatic play have with peer competence? 2-1. What kind of relation does children s structure of social play have with peer competence? 2-2. What kind of relation does children s negotiation of play have with peer competence? Seventeen five-year-old children were chosen out of the twenty-nine five-year-old children attending A kindergarten in Seoul for this study. As for the research method, children s social dramatic play sessions were videotaped and transcribed for analysis. The Intersubjectivity Scale developed by Goncu(1993a) was used to measure children s intersubjectivity and Shin(1995) s range for the leading role and the following role based on Black s Study was used to analyze play role types. In order to measure children s peer competence, the Child Behavior Scale(CBS) developed by Ladd and Profilet(1996) was used. The data was analyzed by using reliance anaylsis and correlation analysis. The following is a summary of the results: First of all, children s intersubjectivity in social dramatic play had a significant association with play role types. In the structure of social play, children with higher frequency of acts per episode tended to play the leading role. On the other hand, children with lower frequency of acts per episode tended to play the following role. In the negotiation of play, children who frequently showed acts of introduction, building-on, and rejection tended to be the leading role and children who showed acceptance tended to be the following role. Secondly, children s intersubjectivity in social dramatic play had a significant relationship with peer competence. In the structure of social play, children with lower frequency of turns and acts per episode were usually asocial and less accepted by peers. The relation between children negotiation of play and peer competence was partial. When we further look at this matter according to the level of intersubjectivity, we can judge that children with higher intersubjectivity who frequently show acts of extension and building-on, had higher peer competence. On the other hand, children with lower intersubjectivity who frequently displayed acts of rejection, emphasize, and doing irrelevant act, had lower peer competence.
