인종문제를 중심으로 한 Faulkner와 Morrison비교연구 : Light in August와 Beloved를 중심으로

Abstract

William Faulkner와 Toni Morrison은 각기 남부 출신의 백인 남성 작가와 북부 출신의 흑인 여성 작가로서 그 문화적, 인종적, 지역적으로 상반된 배경을 가지고 있다. 그러나, 이러한 배경상의 극단적인 차이에도 불구하고, 미국문학을 대표하는 두 거장으로서, 이들은 각자 자신의 문화와 역사를 자신들의 문학적 배경 뿐 아니라 주제로서 선택하여 이에 대한 깊이 있는 문학적 탐색을 시도하면서 서로가 공유하고 있는 부분들이 존재한다. 가장 뚜렷한 공통점은 이들이 남부출신 백인 작가로서, 또 북부출신 흑인 작가로서 각자가 처한 역사적, 지역적, 인종적 상황에서 미국의 인종문제를 자신들의 주된 문학적, 개인적 관심사로 놓고 있다는 점이다. 이들의 문학적 탐색은 노예제도와 인종차별의 역사가 개인의 삶과 사회와의 관계에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가에 모아진다. 이들은 자신들의 문학에서 사회로부터 소외된 개인과, 개인의 정체성을 찾으려는 시도를 부정하거나 억압하는 공동체의 관계를 주된 주제로 다루고 있다. 본 논문에서는 Faulkner의 Light in August와 Morrison의 Beloved를 중심으로 위의 논지가 어떻게 두 작품에서 전개되고 있는가를 밝히고자 한다. Faulkner는 Light in August에서 인종혼합이라는 주제를 통해 남부사회의 노예제도가 남긴 유산의 영향력 하에서 희생되는 인물들을 보여준다. Faulkner가 백인 작가로서 이를 통해 인종 이데올로기에 대한 문제의식과 죄의식을 드러내고 있다면, Morrison은 Beloved에서 흑인들이 감추어진 노예들의 역사를 집단적 재기억을 통해 되살림으로써 인종 이데올로기에 의해 부정당했던 정체성을 회복하고 새로운 미래의 전망을 획득하는 과정을 보여주고 있다. Morrison은 이를 통해 Faulkner와 함께 미국 역사에서 패배한 자들, 자신들의 목소리를 빼앗기고 침묵한 자들에게 목소리를 부여하면서, 그의 주제를 더욱 확장하여 Faulkner의 소설에서 침묵하는 흑인들에게까지 목소리를 부여하여 그의 한계를 극복한다. ; William Faulkner and Toni Morrison have many differences in their cultural, racial and regional backgrounds. The one is a Southerner and white male novelist, while the other is a Northerner and black female one. But, in spite of their different backgrounds, they share the critical mind regarding the racial problem in America. Their literary pursuits focus on how slavery and racism have influenced the relationship between the individual and society. This thesis examines the racial issue as portrayed in Faulkner s Light in August and Morrison s Beloved. In Light in August, Faulkner portrays how the characters become alienated and sacrificed by the legacy of Southern slavery. Faulkner explores the destructive influence of the racism and the guilty consciousness of a white writer through his theme of miscegenation. Morrison tries to seek an alternative from the Black woman s viewpoint. Through her novel, Beloved, Morrison portrays how the Black regain their identity that has been denied by White society and how they gain a hopeful vision for the future. Morrison emphasizes the power and potentiality of the Black community in the process of reclaiming their identity. In conclusion, Morrison not only takes over this Faulknerian racial heritage, but also extends his theme by giving voice to the Black who were once discredited and defeated by the dominant white culture in American history.
