Abstract
Hemingway s In Our Time(1925) and The Sun Also Rises(1926) illustrate the despair and struggle for meaning shown by the generation following the First World War. A sense of total loss and despair coupled with a lack of stability due to sudden economical development characterized the American Twenties. Hemingway establishes a stance of activity and will against this era s disorder through his character s self-acquired codes of conduct. His protagonists not only recognize the nothingness of existence in their time, they also will to undergo the process of learning how to live in it. The writer s restrained strong narrative, along with the characters disciplined behaviors are the means through which Hemingway tries to impart meaning and value to the vulnerability of man facing death and violence. In Our Time deals with the aftermath of war and its direct effects. Here Hemingway finds a loss of historical sense, failed human relationships, and a rejection of past memories in the character of Nick Adams. The stress on Nick s tangible senses and basic actions identify the deliberate effort it takes to keep alive within this world. Nick s struggle for practicality and simplicity also implies the possibility of imposing order in the center of chaos, if only temporal. The Sun Also Rises is a representation of the life of American post-war expatriates in which Hemingway explores the characters of a new generation. Jake Barnes wound serves as a symbol of the generation s alienation, inner conflicts, and emotional instability. Hemingway emphasizes the necessity of making and following the correct codes and principles of life. The bullfighter s art, which subdues the greatest tension and chaos to form and order, stands as a model of behaviour to Jake. Hemingway s belief of the possibility of creating durable meaningfulness through Jake s codes of conduct is doubtful, yet he firmly affirms the struggle and effort itself. Such details prove Hemingway s intentions of writing this story as a tragedy, not a bitter satire. In addition, Hemingway s presentation of appropriate behaviour and conduct rely heavily on his narrative style. His insistence on the objective and the unreflective, the mixed use of omission and presence, and the brevity and directness of conversation are exact transfigurations of Hemingway s attitude toward a violent and confused experience. This thesis, focusing on Hemingway s first two novels which deal with the First World War, attempts to demonstrate the significance and limits of his characters means of living in a post-war society. ; 헤밍웨이는 In Our Time(1925)과 The Sun Also Rises(1926)에서 일차 대전 후의 혼란과 그것을 극복하려는 미국인들의 힘겨운 노력을 그리고 있다.
