Toni Morrison의 비상(Flight)연구 : Song of Solomon(1977)과 Tar Baby(1981)를 중심으로

Abstract

Toni Morrison은 1970년대부터 작품활동을 시작하여 지금까지 ‘흑인 여성 소설가’로서 그 위치가 확고하다. 그 소설세계는 흑인으로서의 뚜렷한 현실인식과 정체성 탐구로 특징지어진다. 특히 미국 사회에서 인종과 성적으로 이중의 차별을 받아온 흑인 여성의 문제에 집중하고 있다. Morrison은 스스로 미국 사회로부터 규정당한 흑인 여성의 삶을 따르지 않겠다고 공표한 바 있다. 소설 속에 등장하는 흑인 여성 인물들도 편견과 억압에서 벗어나 자유로운 삶을 지향하게 된다. Morrison이 의도하는 자유로운 삶, 비상에의 추구는 땅을 떠나지 않고서 이루는 것이다. 본 논문에서 필자는 Toni Morrison의 소설에 나타나는 흑인 여성의 비상을 살펴보고자 한다. 특히 Song of Solomon(1977) 과 Tar Baby(1981)에 등장하는 두 흑인 여성의 삶을 비교, 대조해 봄으로써 진정한 비상의 의미를 찾는다. Song of Solomon에서는 물질중심의 북부적 가치와 전통적인 남부의 가치가 공존하는 시대를 배경으로 Pilate이 어떻게 자유로운 삶을 건설해나가는지 보여진다. 그녀는 Morrison이 말하려는 진정한 의미의 비상인 땅에 발을 붙이고자유를 찾는 삶에 근접해있다. 다음 작품인 Tar Baby는 물질문명이 집약된 섬에서 80년대를 살아가는 Jadine의 모습을 보여준다. 물질과 소비 위주의 터전에서 그녀가 시도하는 비상은 헛된 결말을 낳는다. Morrison은 두 흑인 여성을 통해 전통적인 흑인공동체의 긍정적인 특징들을 뿌리로 만들지 않는 한, 비상이 불가능함을 지적하고 있다. 이 긍정적인 자질이란 공동체간의 유대감, 자연과 전통과의 연결과 조화로 요약될 수 있다. Morrison은 현재 흑인 여성이 당면한 문제를 짚어내고 있다. 자본주의가 발달하고 풍요해질수록 흑인 여성이 자유를 찾기란 더욱 어려운 딜레마를 다루고 있다. 물질과 소비 중심의 사회에서 진정한 길잡이없이 시도되는 비상은 백인중심 문화의 모방에 지나지 않게 된다. Morrison은 이 길잡이가 되어야할 전통과 흑인공동체의 긍정적인 자질들을 복원해내고 올바른 비상을 제시하고 있다. 따라서 철저한 현실인식을 바탕으로 Morrison이 제시하는 진정한 비상을 위한 조건과 의미를 연구하는 것은 현대를 살아가는데 있어 가치있는 작업이다. ; Toni Morrison has achieved great reputation as a black woman novelist since the 1970 s. Morrison s clear perception of reality and quest of identity as a black person within America. characterizes her novels. Morrison especially concentrates on the problems of black women who have suffered from double discrimination, race and sex. Morrison herself claimed that she would never live according to the view of black women determined by American society. Her novels show black women who intend to live freely, casting off prejudice and oppression. The free life Morrison intended to portray is attained through a flight without ever leaving the ground. In this thesis, I will examine the flight of black women in the novels of Toni Morrison. The true meaning of such flight will emerge by comparing the two black women of Song of Solomon and Tar Baby. In Song of Solomon, Morrison presents how Pilate builds a free life in the period when material northern values and traditional southern values coexisted. Pilate comes near to Morrison s true meaning of flight, that is to say, a free life with her foot fixed on the ground. In Tar Baby, Morrison introduces Jadine, a black woman living in a modern material island of the 1980 s. On the background where material and consumption overflow, her flight results in emptiness. Morrison emphasizes the fact that without the traditional black community s positive features as a root the flight itself is impossible. These positive features are closely related to the individual s tie with community, connection with nature, and harmony with tradition. Toni Morrison points out the modern black women s most urgent problem. As capitalism develops and material become abundant, the black women s seek for freedom will accordingly become more difficult. In these material centered societies the flight for freedom without a true pilot is apt to be void and empty. Morrison presents the positive features of the traditional black community as a true pilot for this flight. With this thorough perception of reality, a study on the Toni Morrison s true meaning and condition of flight will be worthwhile to overcome the present problems.
