전의(轉義)합성명사의 인지의미론적 연구

Abstract

본고는 의미의 전이가 일어난 현대국어 합성명사의 형성과 그 형성기제에 대한 고찰을 목적으로 하는데 인지의미론의 관점에서 접근하였다. 기존의 연구들에서 의미변화를 추적하기 어렵다고 처리되고 체계적인 분석이 이루어지지 않았던 합성명사를 포함한 전의(轉義)합성명사의 의미형성을 밝히는 작업을 하였는데 논의의 전개는 다음과 같다. Ⅱ장에서는 Ⅰ장에서 제시한 연구 대상과 연구사 검토를 토대로 하여 합성명사의 개념에 대하여 고찰하고, 합성명사의 의미론적 연구를 위하여 분류체계를 재검토하였다. 또한 전의(轉義)합성명사의 개념을 설정하고 기본의미와 전이된 의미에 대하여 언급하였다. Ⅲ장에서는 전의(轉義)합성명사의 형성과정과 그 형성기제에 관하여 살폈는데, 전의(轉義)합성명사에서 의미의 전이가 일어나는 것은 합성 이전에 개별 단어로 존재할 때에 가지고 있던 단어의 기본의미가 합성과정에서 은유나 환유에 의하여 의미 전이를 일으키는 것으로 파악하였다. 또한 합성명사의 실례분석을 위한 전초 작업으로 전의(轉義)합성명사의 형성기제인 은유와 환유에 관한 인지적 관점에서의 전반적인 이론을 검토·소개하였다. Ⅳ장에서는 현대국어의 전의(轉義)합성명사의 형성과 의미결합의 양상을 실제 자료를 가지고 분석하였다. 전의(轉義)합성명사의 형성 유형을 인지적 관점에서 각 기제별로 세분하여 분석하였는데 합성명사 형성 과정에서의 의미 전이는 은유와 환유에 의하여 일어나는 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 은유가 작용한 전의(轉義)합성명사는 ‘지향적 은유, 존재론적 은유, 구조적 은유, 사물 은유’ 중 어떤 은유가 작용하였는가에 따라 분류·분석하였고, 환유가 작용한 전의(轉義)합성명사는 확대지칭의 경우와 축소지칭의 경우로 나누어 설명하였다. 또한 은유와 환유가 동시에 작용한 예들은 별도로 묶어서 설명하였다. 이 장에서는 앞에서 제시한 내용들을 실제로 적용·검증하는 작업이 이루어졌다. 또한 본고에서 연구 대상으로 삼은 전의(轉義)합성명사의 목록을 Ⅳ장에 분류하여 제시하였다. Ⅴ장은 결론 부분으로 본고의 논의를 요약하고 남은 문제를 제시하였다. 결국 본고는 전의(轉義)합성명사의 형성에 인간의 인지기제인 은유와 환유가 작용하여 의미 전이가 일어난다는 사실에 주목하고 이를 밝히려 한 작업이라 할 수 있다. ; This is a study of the formations of some modern Korean compound nouns and their transferred meanings from the cognitive semantic point of view. The semantic formations of transferred compound nouns were previously considered rather impervious to systematic analyses. The outline of my study is as follows. The first chapter, introducing the scope and the research history of the subject prepares a re-investigation of the concept of compound nouns and their usual classifications in the second chapter in order to elucidate a semantic study of the compound nouns. It is required of us to give a new definition to the transferred compound nouns in reference to their basic meanings and shifted meanings in the second chapter. Further examination of the formation and mechanism of the transferred compound nouns in the third chapter leads to a discovery of certain changes in the original basic meanings in the words in the process of transformation through their newly acquired metaphoric and metonymic connotation. Briefly I examined the general theory of the formational mechanism of metaphors and metonymies from the cognitive point of view before I bring out concrete examples of the compound nouns. In the fourth chapter, I analyze the formation of transferred compound nouns and the phases of semantic changes in the given data. I have tried to show three types of transformational meanings, deriving from transferred compound nouns, first two through the use of either metaphor or metonymy, the last relying on both metaphor and metonymy. I have analyzed transferred compound nouns in the making for their formational mechanisms from the cognitive semantic point of view. The semantic changes occur mainly due to metaphoric and metonymic functions of the compound nouns under review. My analytical frame work necessitates a categorization of metaphors into ‘orientational metaphors, ontological metaphors, structural metaphors, and objective metaphors’ in order to elaborate their actual characteristic usages. I also explain the compound nouns affected by the metonymies both in their extended designations and reduced designations. In the last chapter, I present the summary of this paper and direction of following research.
