Abstract
먼저 시간에 근거한 의미론적 접근방법으로 Montague(1970, 1974), Bennett & Partee(1972) 그리고 Dowty(1977, 1979)의 분석을 살펴보았다. 사건(event)에 근거한 의미론적 접근 방법으로는 Parsons(19889, 1990)와 Kearns(1991)의 분석이 있다. 핵심되는 말: 동사분류, 종결상과 미종결상 진행형, 비활성 세계, 사건과 사건의 구조, 속격주의 모형, 역사, 위치 ; The purpose of this dissertation is to propose a unified semantic analysis of both telic and atelic progressives by using the notion of structured event. We first survey general theories of verbs and general meanings of progressives. Vendler (1967) classified verbs int6o four categories: states, activities, achievements, and accomplishments. States and activities are atelics and achievements and accomplishments are telics. Then we review previous analyses of progressives and discuss their problems. As far as the time-based approach is concerned Montague (1970, 1974) and Bennett and Partee (1972) focus only on atelic progressives, whereas Dowty (1977, 1979) tries to formulate the truth condition for telic and atelic progressives on the basis of inertia world. As contented by Vlach (1981), Hinrichs (1983), Cooper (1985), ter Meulen (1985), and Kearns (1991), Dowty’s analysis, however, fails to account for sentences that have two events, one of which is interrupted by another. Parsons (1989, 1990) suggests two technical terms, i.e. Hold for which is continued and Cul for which is culminated. By using these terms, Parsons tries to propose logical forms that show the difference between progressives and non-progressives. The logical forms of process (activity) verbs and event (accomplishment and achievement) verbs do not reveal the different entailments between them. In addition, Parsons’ analysis fails for account for sentences having events that both hold and culminate. Kearns (1991) account for the atelic progressive in terms of truth condition and the telic progressive in terms of double memberships. On the basis of double memberships, Kearns claims that entailments of atelic progressives are the same as those of ing complements of aspectual verbs. Kearns’ claim, however, proves to be false by virtue of Kearns’ inability to account for the entailments of aspectual; progressives. Van Voorst (1993) proposes the Localist Model, which differs from traditional studies in that the former focuses on space, while the latter focuses on time. Van Voorst suggests basic Localist concepts such as begin-reading, end-reading, inclusion, and cohesion and reanalyzes Vendler’s four-way distinction of verbs according to such Localist concepts. Even though van Voorst states that the semantics of progressives goes beyond the Localist Model, this dissertation tries to account for progressives in terms of Localist concepts. Through these procedures, this dissertation presents a rationale for rejecting van Voorst’s concepts, i.e. inclusion and cohesion, on the basis that these concepts are not adequate for an account of the progressive. Thus it is suggested herein that inclusion and cohesion are subsumes under the notion of structured event. The proposed study suggests a revised analysis of telic and atelic progressives on the basis of a structured event. It is assumed that: (I) the progressive is a VP operator, (ii) every sentence has underlying structured events, and (iii) the non-progressive conceptually precedes the progressive. How the structured events process is represented by a history, which is a set of events. A history used in this dissertation is similar to the so-called general history in that both take place according to the natural law, i.e. cause and effect. The difference, however, is that the former is restricted to events indicated by sentences. On the basis of the notion of history, a revised truth condition for telic and atelic progressives is proposed. According to our proposed truth condition, the difference between non-progressives and progressives is that the former represent a closed history and the latter represent an open history. As a conclusion, we summarize the notions of structured event and history. Them we discuss the difference between previous analyses and our proposed analysis.
