Abstract
; Aerodynamic forces are believed to significantly affect sporting performance in numerous athletic events. Since these aerodynamic effects can not be easily measured experimentally owing to their complications, however, iterative numerical calculations are required. There have been a number of attempts to develop models for the prediction of performance in running race. Most studies have forced on formulating mathematical functions for performance records and running distance without proper physical consideration of the forces acting on runners. In this thesis a simple physical model of 100-meter sprint race is built by analyzing the forces acting on the sprinter. The model contains a dimensional parameter to best represent the resistance of air and muscle. An equation of motion of the model is derived by using the performance records in the world class 100-m race. It is shown that the resistance force acting on the sprinter is approximately proportional to the velocity of the runner rather than the square of the velocity. The equation of motion applied to the curved 200-m sprint races yields a time difference Dt of 0.256±0.023 sec between lane 1 and lane 8 due to the lane curvature effect. This suggests that the current starting lines for the curved 200-m sprint races should be redesigned. Skilled discus throwers claim that a properly thrown discus will travel several meters farther if it is thrown against the wind than if it is thrown with the wind. Numerical calculations confirm this claim for winds of up to about 20m/sec and show that the extra distance is caused by the higher lift and drag forces acting on the discus which is thrown against the wind. Aerodynamic considerations influence numerous aspects of discus throwing, but have not been discussed in the scientific literature. Frohlich’s two dimensional dynamic equation is extended into three dimensional form. The ranges and lateral deflections of the discus trajectory are calculated using the experimental data of Frohlich. At still air, the combination of release angle of 30º and attitude angle of 20º is optimum for maximum distance. Moreover, it is shown that the worst wind condition for discus throw occurs at around 10m/sec. The lateral deflection changes significantly as the angular velocity increases. When the discus is thrown against the wind, the lateral deflection increases, but when it is with the wind, the lateral deflection can be ignored, being less than about 1 meter.
