A syntactic analysis of sentential negation in English

Abstract

본 논문은 문장 부정어인 not에 대한 통사적인 분석을 목적으로 하며, 특히 부정어인, not의 통사적인 특성과 통사 범주로서의 Tense와의 관계가 논의의 중심이 된다. 모든 자연 언어에서 명제 p에 대한 부정 표현이 가능한데, 문장 부정을 나타내는 통사적 방법은 언어마다 다르다. 그러나, 언어 보편적으로 문장 부정이 독립적인 최대 범주. NEGP로 나타난다는 가정하에서 각 언어의 차이가 통사적인 관점에서 포착될 수 있다. 즉, 문장 부정어의 통사적 특성은 문장 부정어가 NEGP내에서 어떤 요소로 실현되느냐에 따라서 결정된다. 이러한 의미에서, 영어는 문장 부정어 not이 NEGP의 핵 요소로서 실현된 언어이다. 또한, NEGP의 지정어 자리에는 NEG 운용소가 있다는 분석하에서 영어의 문장 부정의 통사적 특성이 설명될 수 있다. 영어 문장 부정에 대한 이와 같은 분석은 부정어 not에 대한 두가지의 구분을 가능케 한다. 즉, 문장 부정어 not은 Tense의 보문으로서 Tense의 선택 제약 조건을 만족시키므로써 NEGP의 핵 요소로서 허가받지만, Tense의 선택 제약 조건을 만족시키지 못하는 부정어 not은 부사적인 요소로서 구별된다. 비시제절에도 통사적 범주로서 TP가 존재한다는 가정하에서, 시제절 뿐만 아니라 비시제절에서 나타나는 not의 분포적 특성이 잘 설명될 수 있으며 부정어 not이 이와 같이 두가지 유형으로 구별되어야함은 not에 대한 작용역 해석에 의해서 뒷받침될 수 있다. 문장 부정이 Tense에 의해서 허가된다는 사실은 Chomsky(1992)에서 제안된 최소 이론을 받아들여서, 문장 부정이 Tense에 의해서 형태적 자질 점검을 받아야 한다는 제안으로 포착될 수 있다. 문장의 양상이 특정한 자질로서 명시되어야 한다는 전제하에서, 부정문의 경우에는 Tense에 [+NEG] 자질이 명시된다고 가정한다. 문장 부정어 not은 형태적 자질로서 [NEG] 자질을 가지며 이는 Tense에 의해서 점검된다. 언어 보편적으로 문장 부정의 허가는 LF에서 일어난다. 따라서 NEGP의 핵인 NEG가 이동하지 않는다는 이전의 분석과는 달리 은시적으로 NEG가 Tense로 이동하지 않는다는 가정하에서는 부정어 not의 동사 이동에 관한 제약 현상이 자연스럽게 설명된다. 뿐만 아니라 문정 부정에 대한 형태적 점검 분석이 S-구조를 제거한 최소 이론하에서 S-구조의 제약 조건의 언급없이도 부정 극어의 분포를 잘 설명해 준다. 결과적으로 문장 부정이 Tense에 의해 자질 점검된다는 제안에 비추어 볼 때 최소 이론내에서 영어의 문장 부정의 통사적 본질이 잘 포착된다고 할 수 있다. ; Every natural language can express the negation of a proposition p. While the semantic result of negating p is uniform, the syntactic means employed to do so vary. However, the range of variation which is possible in the syntactic means adopted by the languages for expressing sentential negation is constrained. That is, the negative marker expressing sentential negation in different languages is assumed to appear within a functional projection NEGP and its syntactic properties depend on the different instantiations of the category NEGP. English is the language where sentential negation is expressed in terms of the NEGP category, which consists of a NEG head with the negative marker not and a specifier filled with a NEG operator. This characterization accounts for the syntactic properties of sentential negative marker, not, which blocks movements of both minimal and maximal categories. Assuming that sentential negation is expressed in terms of a functional projection of NEGP, two types of not are distinguished; a head of NEGP and an adverbial element. The former is licensed by a Tense category, while the latter is not. Hence, under the assumption that infinitival clauses also contain a syntactic category of Tense, the distributional properties of sentential negative marker in infinitival clauses as well as in finite clauses are explained. The fact that sentential negation is parasitic on Tense lends support to the proposal that sentential negation must be licensed by Tense. This is done by morphological checking of [NEG] feature of sentential negative marker not against T at LF within a minimalist framework. Besides lexical heads. the sentential negative marker not must be checked off its morphological feature by T, which is assumed to carry the modality of negative sentences. Based on the assumption that checking interpretation of sentential negation takes place at LF, the asymmetry of not with respect to blocking effect on verb movement receives simple account without supplementary assumptions in Chomsky (1991). The negative polarity item licensing is also accounted for in conformity with the minimalist framework dispensing with S-structure. Therefore, the proposal that sentential negation must be licensed by T through morphological checking is well motivated and this gives support to the minimalist theory.
