Abstract
; The purpose of this study is to examine theoretically schooling and social mobility of the working class. It was carried out by analyzing and reviewing the related literatures. The basic assumption of the study is that schooling reproduces and even accentuates existing class structure. It attempted to examine educational inequality critically, not from a dominant functional viewpoint. The ubiquitous character of social inequality suggests that every social structure have inequality-creating factors. Every society proclaims the ideals of inequality: yet marked social inequalities continue to exist in practice. In fact, social inequality has existed from ancient Plato to modern industrial society and its conceptual interpretation has been defined in various ways according to societies and times. It works as a fundamental factor causing conflicts and tensions in human society as well. There are two contrasting paradigms, a conflict perspective and a functional one, which explain social inequality. The former contends that the existing social conditions are artificial phenomena produced by power struggle. Thus it denys the inevitability of inequality in society. On the other hand the latter insists that inequality is ‘functional’ and necessary to the survival of society. Both theoretical frameworks provide the basic models in explaining the causal structure of educational inequality; conservative, meritocratic and radical. Each of them interprets it differently and is a keystone in deciding educational ideas and structures. Recently the meaning of equality of educational opportunity has been redefined from equal opportunity to equality of result. However, within unequal social structure there are a group of people in a disadvantaged position, the working class, who have low income and occupy low social status. It is also true that expansion of educational opportunity does not bring about a reduction in such inequality which is the inequality of social opportunity. That is, they are deprived of their opportunities of schooling and are treated unequally within educational systems which mirror social relations of production. Therefore their social mobility channels are extremely closed, which many recent studies on social mobility show. As a result of this study it is concluded that schooling contributes to reproducing and legitimating existing unequal social structure rather than to democratization of society and equalization of education in modern society.
