한국근대소설의 인물, 서사유형 연구 : 이광수와 김동인의 작품을 중심으로

Abstract

본 論文은 韓國小說 硏究에 있어 古典과 現代를 접맥시키는 입장에서 共通的 共感帶를 형성하는 原型的 類型(typology)을 人物(Character) 硏究에 도입한 것이다. 이에 古典과 現代의 기점에 위치한 李光洙와 金東仁을 대상으로 韓國現代小說의 特徵의 지속적 계승과 변모를 共時的 맥락 속에서 이해하고자 했다. 연구 방법은 人物의 서사적 立像化를 통한 敍事類型의 內在的 접근으로써 서사구조를 유기적인 총체로서 파악하였다. 人物類型은 서사자의 모방양식과 人物의 운명성을 분류의 축으로 해서 크게 英雄(Hero)과 反英雄(anti-Hero)으로 양분하였다. 이에 李光洙를 통해서는 英雄原型을, 金東仁은 反英雄原型으로 접근하여 構造의 原型的 패턴과 性格의 特徵을 추출하였다. 李光洙 小說의 주인공은 상위모방 양식(High Mimetic Mode)에 속하는 指導者級 人物로서 民族啓蒙 및 社會敎化를 지향하여 存在樣式的 삶을 사는 人物이며, 構造的으로는 英雄原型 특유의 探索(Quest)모티프와 傳記的 類型構造 및 結緣試鍊 모티브를 이루고 있다. 따라서 李光洙 小說은 前代 英雄小說의 형태로 파악해서 一代記 考察과 結緣試鍊 양상을 검토하였다. 그결과 이들은 前代小說의 段落을 계승하면서도, 특유의 고유한 단락을 갖고 있어서 前代 小說의 변모를 동시에 보여주고 있다. 즉 前代小說이 一代記 단락에서는 幸福 일변도의 結末로 끝나지만, 李光洙 小說의 결말은 비극을 예시한다. 結緣試鍊 구조에서도 결혼예증이 있었던 배우자와 결합하지 못하고 제2배우자와 결합해서 죽음 또는 재생의 암시로 종결되거나 애정의 갈등을 사회사업으로 해소시킨다. 이들은 자신의 입신공명만을 위해 힘쓰는 個人的 英雄이 아니라, 社會라는 집단을 위한 희생양적 英雄(Sacrificial Hero)으로 행동한다. 또한 애정의 삼각갈등에서는 과도기 지식인의 유동적인 양면성을 보이고 있다. 또한 英雄的 人物에 따르는 原型的 모티브인 探索(Quest), 冒險(Adventure), 再生(Rebirth), 試鍊(Initiation), 課業(Task), 墮落(Fall)등이 수반되며, 誘惑者(Temptress), 援助者(Helper), 惡魔(Devil), 疎外者(Outcast)등의 原型的 人物들이 英雄의 旅程에 등장하고 있다. 金東仁은 李光洙에 대한 반동이자, 그의 惡魔主義 및 自然主義 경향은 反英雄的 人物 原型을 창조하고 있다. 이들 反英雄은 英雄的 惡漢(Heroic Villian), 疎外者(Outcast), 아이로니 양식(Ironic Mode)의 劣等人으로 세분할 수 있는데, 이들은 反社會的이고 非道德的인 性格을 공통적으로 갖고 있다. 前代小說의 惡漢이 안타고니스트로서 非道德的인 所有樣式의 人物이라면, 東仁의 악한은 본능(Id)과 內在惡에 의해 행동하는 本質的인 惡行者다. 이들 反英雄 冒險의 遍歷構造는 피카로(Picaro)및 英雄的 惡漢의 特徵과 유사하다. 東仁의 日常的 人物은 소속사회에서 고립되거나 외곽으로 떠도는 유동적 인물이다. 여성편력, 인간관계의 파탄은 기성도덕과 윤리를 무시하는 데서 기인한다. 성격적 결함을 지닌 이 人物들은 궁극적인 惡의 세계와의 충돌 속에서 급진적으로 轉落한다. 따라서 小說構造는 죽음, 낙향, 방랑 등의 비극적 종말의 轉落構造를 형성한다. 東仁의 空間 背景은 낭만적 편력이 전개되는 非日常的 空間과 自然主義 경향의 사실적 공간인 하층배경으로 나뉜다. 이에 운명, 죽음, 性, 犯罪 등의 궁극적인 어둠이 무대 장치로 나타나며, 환경에 의한 범죄가 발생된다. 아이로니 劣等人物로 구현된 受難의 女性像, 犯罪者, 不具者 등의 人物은 東仁의 패배주의와 비극적 인식을 구체적으로 확인시켜준다. 李光洙와 金東仁은 近代文學의 양대 산맥으로 이들을 통해 나타난 人物의 原型 연구는 古代와 現代를 통시적 맥락으로 연결하는데 교량역할을 담당하는 계기가 되겠다. ; This dissertation attempts to apply the methodology of typology to the study of archetypal characters appearing in Korean modern novels. It also intends, from synchronic point of view, to understand, as a whole, the characteristics of classic and modern novels in Korean, introducing the archetypal Characters. The novel of Kwang-su Lee and Dong-in Kim are of primary interest in this study because they appear during the transient period from classic to modern novels. Archetypal character is roughly classified into two: Hero and Anti-hero. The characters of Kwang-su Lee’s and Dong-in Kim’s are treated as Hero and Anti-hero, respectively, and the characteristic patterns of structures and the features of characters are then examined. The heroes appearing in Kwang-su Lee’s are considered to be the leaders, belonging to “High mimetic mode” and “Existence of being mode”. The leaders are eager for enlightenment and social education. They have typical features of hero, such as Quest motif, Biographical pattern and Marriage Hindrance motif. Lee’s novels are compared with the classic heroic-novels, in such aspects as pattern of life cycle and Marriage Hindrance. The comparative study attests that Lee’s novels succeed the types of the classic novels, and change gradually, still maintaining the characteristics of the archetype. In Lee’s heroic patterns, the tragic ending rather than happy ending is indicated. They are the sacrificial heroes who live not for personal success in life but for society. In Marriage Hindrance motif, fiance(fiancee) marries, after all, not his fiancee (her fiance), but a third person who lives a new way of life, or of physical and material thinking Heroes conflict not only between physical living and moral thinking, but also between free and old marriage styles. Heroes show double faces of an intellectual, living transitional era and suffering from complications due to eternal triangle. Heroes devote themselves to social work to escape from love or they commit suicide. Lee’s novels show archetypal patterns; Quest, Adventure, Rebirth, Initiation, Task, Fall motif and so on. Heroes in Lee’s novels meet other types of archetypal characters such as Helper, Devil, Temptress, Outcast on the way of their journey. Dong-in Kim, in reaction to Kwang-su Lee, goes for Devilism and Nationalism, creating Anti-hero Archetype. His Anti-hero is classified into Heroic Villain, Outcast, and characters of Ironic mode. The characteristics of his anti-hero type are anti-social and immoral. Whereas the Villains, antagonists in classic novels, are of immoral “Existence of having mode”, those in Dong-in Kim’s are essentially evils, aggregates of instinct, id, and abnormal way of thinking and life. The adventure of anti-hero is similar to that of picaro and Heroic Villain. The ordinary common people in Kim’s are alienated from their society because of their abnormal, rebellious temper. Unchaste and failure in human relations result from the ignorance of existing moral and ethics. Kim’s anti-heros have the tragic flaws in character which cause the isolation from the society, and they degrade rapidly, colliding against the world of eternal darkness, symbol of evil. Therefore, the structure of novels signifies the fall motif of tragic ending, such as death, rustication, wader with dramatic turn-over. Space and background setting for Kim’s anti-hero consists of the extraordinary space where romantic wander resides and the actual setting of the lower classes, due to the tendency of naturalism. There appears an evil of abyss such as fate, death, sex(id), crime. Such environment, in turn, influences the character’s way of life. The characters of ironic mode-tragic woman, criminal, disabled clarify the innate tragedy and defeatism in Kim’s world view point. Since Kwang-su lee and Dong-in Kim are the two leading features in Modern Literature in Korea, the study of archetypal characters appearing in their novels will shed a light on bridging classic and modern novels by diachronically considerations.
