Leonard Bernstein의 song cycle [I hate music]에 관한 연구

Abstract

Leonard Bernstein (레너드 번스타인: 1918-1990)은 20세기에 미국이 낳은 최초의 위대한 지휘자요, pianist이며, 작곡가이다. 또한, 그는 저술가, 교육자, 연설가로서의 다양한 경력을 지녔으며, 다방면에 걸쳐 천부적인 재능을 지닌 사람이었다. 일반적으로 Bernstein은 New York Philharmonic의 지휘자로 잘 알려져 있지만, 그는 지휘 뿐만 아니라 작곡에서도 뛰어난 소질을 발휘하였다. 그의 가장 잘 알려진 작품인 <West Side Story>는 우리 나라에서도 많이 공연되고 대중들에게 사랑을 받았을 만큼 전세계적으로 인기를 끈 대작이다. Bernstein의 음악은 Gustav Mahler(1860-1911),Paul Hindemith(1895-1963), Arnold Sch nberg(1874-1951), Igor Stravinsky(1882-1971), Dmitri Shostakovich(1906-1971), Aaron Copland(1900-), George Gershwin(1898-1937) 등의 작곡가들로부터 영향을 받았고, 거기에 jazz와 Latin America music, popular music 등의 성향을 가미하는 등, 작곡기법에서도 그의 재능만큼이나 다양한 측면을 볼 수 있다. 즉, 그는 학구적인 배경 하에 클래식과 대중음악의 특성을 둘다 가진 절충주의적 작곡가였던 것이다. 이러한 Bernstein의 작품은 무엇보다 musical과 극음악에서 뛰어난 평가를 받고 있지만, 본 논문에서는 특히 그의 Song Cycle <I Hate Music>에 대해서 다루고자 한다. 이 작품은 Bernstein의 pianist로서의 debut 곡으로 1943년 8월 25일, 그의 25세 생일때 mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel과 Bernstein의 초연으로 연주되었다. 즉, 이는 Bernstein의 작곡가로서의 명성을 알리는 첫 무대였고, 이로 인해 그는 처음으로 세상의 주목을 받게 된 것이다. 이 Song Cycle은 “A Cycle of Five Kid Songs for Soprano and Piano (소프라노와 피아노를 위한 다섯 개의 어린이 노래)” 란 부제가 붙어 있는 곡으로, 동화적이고 재치 있으면서도 Bernstein의 사회에 대한 비판적인 철학이 담겨 있는 노래들이다. 여기서는 우선 Leonard Bernstein의 생애에 대해 고찰해 본 후에, 그의 음악적 특징에 대해 간단히 살펴보았고, 특히 그의 성악작품을 중점으로 논하였으며, 마지막으로 그의 초기 성악 작품에 속하는 <I Hate Music>을 분석함으로, 20세기 미국 음악의 자존심을 세워 놓은 Bernstein에 대한 이해와 접근을 시도해 보았다. ; Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was the first great American-born conductor, a pianist, and a composer. He had various careers such as an author, a music educator and a speaker with great ability in many fields. The best-known work of Bernstein’s “West Side Story” was performed many times in Korea and was enjoyed by the public as a worldwide masterpiece. His music was influenced by several composers such as Gustav Mahler, Paul Hindemith, Arnold Schoenberg, Igor Stravinsky, Dmitri Shostakovich, Aaron Copland, and George Gershwin. On top of them he utilized jazz idioms, Latin American and popular music which have been demonstrated the variety of his composing tendencies as well as his talents. So he was a compromising composer who used both classical and popular music characteristics based upon his academic background. Even though he is better known for his musicals, the subject of this thesis is song cycle <I Hate Music>. This song cycle was sung first on the 25th of August 1943 which was Bernstein’s 25th birthday by a mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel in accompaning by himself at the piano. It was his first recognition as a composer and that brought him a great public attention. This song cycle, with subtitle ‘A Cycle of Five Kid Songs for Soprano and Piano’, contains fairy tale, wit, and his critical philosophy about society. In this thesis, firstly his biography is introduced, and then his musical characteristics, especially his vocal works, are considered. Finally, by analyzing <I Hate Music> that typified his early vocal works, an attempt to understand and approach Bernstein, who stands as the pride of 20th century American music, is made.
