Abstract
; The purpose of this dissertation is to examine some issues in segmental phonology of English, to reanalyze them in the framework of lexical phonology, and to provide somewhat refined solutions for them from different aspects. In this study I follow the model of Rubach s(1980; 1982; 1985) and Booij and Rubach s(1987) lexical phonology and use X-tier to represent syllable structures. Processes of syllabification and resyllabification provide some clues for the better solutions to the issues in segmental phonology of English: flapping, palatalization, /r/- deletion, /h/-deletion, and sonorant syllabification. I claim that syllabification of all segments takes place in the underlying representation, and resyllabification in the process of word formations. I also claim that ambisyllabic elements resulting from resyllabification should be allowed. Ambisyllabicity provides significant environments of phonological rules. Resyllabification Rule applies obligatorily within the foot at word level and optionally at phrase level. One of the phonological phenomena in English, the flapping phenomenon is explicitly accounted for by ambisyllabicity, because only the ambisyllabic /t/ and /d/ undergo the flapping. In the analyses of palatalization and sonorant syllabification ambisyllabicity also plays an important role. Ambisyllabicity simplifies these analyses in the framework of lexical phonology without assuming Stratum Ordering Hypothesis. The phenomena of palatalization(Mohanan, 1982; Borowsky, 1984) and /r/-deletion(Mohanan, 1982; 1985) have been analyzed in an ad hoc way. That is, they have been considered to occur obligatorily at word level and optionally at phrase level. In my analyses, however, the dual qualities of the phenomena, in fact, are not due to the property of the rules themselves, but to the optional application of Resyllabification Rule at phrase level. Therefore, I claim that Palatalization Rule and /r/-Deletion Rule are obligatory at phrases level as well as at word level. I try to account for the phenomenon of /h/-deletion in relation to syllable structure. That is, the ambisyllabic /h/ is deleted within the foot. The variation between syllabic [1] and non-syllabic [1] can be explained by the processes of syllabification and resyllabification. In my framework of lexical phonology, I incorporate Sonorant Resyllabification Rule and /l/-Resyllabification Rule, which mohanan proposed, into Resyllabification Rule, and postulate Sonorant Syllabification Rule, in which ambisyllabicity plays an important role.
