Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the symbolic meaning and ethos of Goguryo dance depicted in ancient tomb mural paintings appeared from the 4th to the 7th centuries. This study is based on both bibliographic knowledge of Goguryo dynasty and observation of eight mural paintings of Goguryo tombs, which are Muyongchong, Tonggu No. 12 Tomb, Maseongu No. 1 Tomb, Jangcheon No. 1 Tomb, Gosandong No. 10 Tomb, Susanli Ancient Tomb, Palchongli Ancient Tomb, and the Ohwebun No. 4 Tomb, mainly focused on long sleeve dance in Muyongchong Tomb. A literature survey includes original texts such as Samgukji, Huhanseo, Suseo, Tongjeon, Gudangseo, indangseo, Taepyongeoram, Samguksagi, Haedongyeoksa and existing studies of those books as well as Goguryo history, religions, culture and arts. It is considered that Erwin Panofsky's iconological theory is suitable reference to construct new research method for in-depth study of Goguryo dance, in terms of his approach that employs an integrated analysis of original literature and current studies for augmentation and modification of iconological studies. The process of this study consists of description, analysis, and interpretation, and identifies the external forms, meanings and the ethos of Goguryo dance. Results of the study are as follows. First, the prevalent type of Goguryo dance was ‘sleeve dance'. It is similar to the movement of a bird moving its wings. Sleeves in Goguryo dance had both a practical and decorative purpose in addition to roles of inner communication, temperance, respect and pursuit of everlasting life after death. Hence, Goguryo sleeve dance expressed philosophical values harmonized with the community-oriented and nature-friendly thoughts of the Goguryo people. Second, Goguryo dance had various formations, such as single dance, pair dance, and group dance of three, five, or large scale of performers. Movement of the upper body is observed as sleeve motions, and that of the lower body is observed as earth-directed steps using knees and hip reactions. Musical instruments were mostly string instruments such as Wanham and Geomungo. Third, Goguryo dance performed for multiple purposes as religious, funereal, amusement and theatrical functions. In particular the ceremonial dance, which incorporated the indigenous faith of shamanism with Buddhism as well as Taoism about life after death, had a high social value and was recognized as a sacred spiritual performance. Fourth, the sleeve dance of Goguryo dynasty was later modified as the Hansam dance as it continued to be performed in the eras of Goryo and Joseon dynasty. It consequently developed in the two separate tracks of court dance and folk dance. Also, its external beauty was transferred to Salpuri dance and Seoungmu dance, which utilized long piece of a scarf or long sleeves that had been modified from the Goguryo Costume. Fifth, the essential spirit that was prevalent in Goguryo dance has been transferred from motion to motion to the present day. Its original ethos symbolized unification, harmony, and integration of matters such as body and mind, faith and reality, birth and death, heaven and earth, human and nature, as well as decorum and mirth. Goguryo people handed down their dance by drawing it in ancient tomb mural paintings. These are valuable as physical evidence representing the earliest manifestation of the body movements of the ancient Korean. However, there have been lack of previous systematic analysis of such murals from the perspective of dance. Therefore, this study signifies by means of establishing synthetical research method in order to systematically examine ancient mural depictions of Goguryo dance and identifying the external forms, symbolic meaning and the original ethos in it.
