빛과 공간에 대한 근원적 사유

Abstract

Human being was gradually civilized according to the change of lifestyle from nomadic to settle-down life. As a consequence of that civilization, town and city were developed spontaneously. And then city was modernized, little by little. Especially in recent era, the speed of modernizing has been more rapid. Moreover, the development of telecommunication accelerated the speed. The meaning of Space and Time was changed with that speed also, just like that any kinds of news from everywhere in the world became to be spread world widely in real time. But this change worked on visible surface of phenomena only, and did not give a chance for meditating on original meanings which is laid on deep inside of matters. So in this thesis, I am to perceive the Space, as a main theme, and to reconsider the value and meaning of it through fundamental approach. Space is the essential environment for human life, and all of the activities are based on this Space. Human being is the existence which is involved in Space. So Space is not merely physical but meaningful object which cannot be separated from our human life. Nevertheless, we cannot perceive Space because it is always very adjacent to us, and so we used to forget to perceive it. Louis Kahn had sought to solve the basic question, quoted in this thesis, to understand the originality of architecture. This question, "What is architecture?", was to seek for the original value and meaning in Space. And we can consider this Kahn's seeking for originality of architecture with relating to Heidegger's ontology. Heidegger thought that the question was begun from forgetting-existence. The attitude to perceive matters from their visible surface only, is not helpful to seek the originality and truth of matters. With same thought as Kahn and Heidegger had, I am considering, with referencing my works, what the original value and meaning of Space in our lives is. This question is not only for Space itself, but for basic perception to the environment and its influence, and consequently for the existence of human being. That question will begin from the study on Light which makes the Existence(named as Space) visible. I'll research the originality and value in Light as a fundamental element to make Space existing. Light is the element which can reveal and shape the Space, and so is the beginning point to make Space become meaningful. So, with the research for fundamental characteristics of Light, I raise the question about meaning of Light that influences to Space. By analyzing the communication and its depth between human and Space with throwing human into Space, meaning of Space in human life and meaning of human being who act to Space can be searched throughly. My several works are, relating to Space as a main theme, the results of searching Light in aspect of Space-shaping maker and, of searching human relations based on Space. So, I want to suggest the fundamental comprehension to the originality of Space and the necessity of perceiving it, with my works. Through this process, I aim to understand the meaning of Space and Light influencing our basic life, because the continuous concern and interest to Light is not limited to architect or painter only, but to all the human living in Space.;과거 인간의 유목생활이 정착생활로 전환됨에 따라 문명이 발달하게 되었고, 그 결과는 도시의 출현을 초래했다. 그 후 도시의 근대화는 빠른 속도로 진행되었고, 특히 최근의 발달은 이제까지의 변화와는 비교할 수 없을 정도로 급변하고 있다. 정보통신의 발달은 그 속도를 더욱 가속화 시켰다. 세계 각지에서 터지는 끊임없는 사건과 사고를 세계 모든 사람들이 거의 실시간으로 공유할 수 있게 된 것처럼, 그 변화의 속도에 발 맞춰 기존의 공간과 시간의 개념도 바뀌고 있는 것이다. 그러나 이러한 변화는 눈앞에 보이는 현상에만 치우쳐, 그 이면에 존재하는 보다 근본적인 것에 대한 사고를 할 수 있는 여유를 주지 않았던 것이다. 따라서 본인은 본인작품의 주제인 ‘공간’을 사고의 중심에 두고, 그것에 대한 근원적인 접근을 통해 그동안 간과되었던 ‘공간’이라는 존재를 인식하고, 그 가치와 의미를 재고(reconsideration)해 보고자 한다. ‘공간’은 우리의 삶을 위한 근원적인 터전이다. 인간의 모든 행위는 공간을 전제로 이루어진다. 즉 인간은 언제든 공간에 속한 존재인 것이다. 따라서 인간에게 공간은 단순히 물리적인 대상이 아닌, 인간의 삶과 분리될 수 없는 ‘의미 공간’이 된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 공간과 너무 가까이 있기 때문에 그것을 보지 못했고, 너무나도 당연하게 여겼던 것이다. 이러한 의미에서, 본 논문에 제시된 루이스 칸이 그의 일생에 걸쳐 탐구했던 ‘건축이란 무엇인가’라고 하는 건축에 대한 근본적인 물음은, 건축의 존재자체에 주목하여 그것의 본질적인 가치와 의미를 모색하고자 한 것이었다. 또한 칸의 이러한 ‘건축의 본래성’에 대한 사유는 하이데거의 ‘존재론(ontology)’과 연결지어 생각할 수 있다. 하이데거 사유의 근본적인 문제의식은 ‘존재망각’에서 비롯된 것으로서, 눈앞에 놓여 있는 것만으로 대상을 파악하려는 태도는 존재의 진리와 본성을 밝히려는 눈을 방해한다고 생각했던 것이다. 칸과 하이데거가 주장했던 것처럼, 본인의 작품을 통하여 ‘우리의 삶 속에서 공간이 지닌 근원적인 의미와 가치는 무엇인가’에 대한 물음을 던지고자 한다. 이것은 공간에만 국한된 것이 아닌 우리의 환경에 대한 근본적인 인식과, 그것이 미치는 영향에 관한 것으로써, 결국 인간의 존재에 관한 것이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 그 물음은 공간을 가시화 시키는 ‘빛’에 대한 탐구로 시작한다. 빛은 공간이라는 구조를 드러내주는 조형적인 요소일 뿐만 아니라, 의미 있는 공간이 되기 위한 시작이다. 따라서 빛의 본질적인 특성과 성격을 알아보고, 그러한 빛이 공간에게 미치는 의미와 가치에 대해 물음을 제기하고자 한다. 또한 공간에게 인간이라는 존재를 던짐으로, 인간과 공간사이에 이루어지는 소통과 그 깊이를 분석함으로서, 인간의 삶 속에서 공간이 지니는 의미와, 또한 공간에 작용하는 인간의 의미에 대해 깊이 있게 고찰해 보고자 한다. 즉 본인의 작품은 공간을 중심으로 하여, 공간의 근원적인 요소인 빛에 대한 조형적 의미적 탐구와, 공간을 기본으로 하는 인간과의 관계를 탐구하는 과정의 결과물들로서, 작품을 통해 지금 우리가 속해있는 공간에 대한 본질적인 이해와 인식의 필요성을 제시하고자 하고자 한다. 이는 빛과 공간이 우리 삶의 근원에 작용하는 의미와 중요성을 인식하도록 하는데 있다. 빛과 공간에 대한 지속적인 관심은 결코 화가나 건축가에게 국한되는 것이 아닌, 실제 그 속에서 살고 있는 우리 모두에게 해당되는 것이기 때문이다.
