지리 킬리안(Jiri Kylian)의 안무성향에 관한 연구

Abstract

오늘날의 발레는 크게 기존의 전통성을 고수하는 ‘고전발레’와 그 고정 형식에서 벗어나 보다 창의적이고 새로운 변형을 시도하는 ‘현대발레’로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 19세기 말부터 시작된 고전발레의 근본적인 형식과 내용을 탈피하고자 하는 움직임은 발레 안무가 ‘미쉘 포킨’의 과감한 혁신을 통해 현대발레로 출현하게 되었다. 이를 기점으로 급진적인 사상을 가진 많은 안무가들은 이전의 엄격한 방식에서 벗어나 현대적인 경향을 띄는 창의적인 도전과 실험적이고 다양한 안무방법을 개발시켜나갔으며 이들의 끊임없는 노력으로 오늘날 현대발레는 하나의 무용예술 형태로 확고히 자리 잡게 되었다. 이러한 현대발레계의 전환기와 성장기에 있었던 지리 킬리안은 현대발레의 기본적 특성이라 할 수 있는 혼합과 절충주의에 입각하여 감각적이고 스피디한 독자적인 안무 스타일을 구축하였으며, 근 20년간 70편 이상의 작품을 안무하면서 왕성한 창작활동을 펼침으로써 동시대의 누구보다 통찰력과 영향력을 지닌 20세기의 대표적인 현대발레 안무가이다. 지리 킬리안은 체코슬로바키아에서 태어나 9세에 발레를 배우기 시작하여 28세의 나이로 ‘네덜란드 댄스 씨어터(NDT)’의 예술 감독이 되면서 많은 업적과 세계적인 안무가로서의 명성을 얻으며 NDT를 세계적인 수준의 무용단으로 이끌었다. 그는 자신만의 철저한 분석과 심오한 해석을 통해 수년에 걸쳐 독특한 상징성과 최소한의 감정만을 이용한 춤 언어 구사력과 완벽한 음악성을 기반으로 예리하고 섬세한 창작 작업을 하였다. 본 논문에서는 그러한 지리 킬리안의 무용 활동과 작품세계를 고찰하여 그의 안무성향을 연구하고자 하였다. 먼저 지리 킬리안의 창작 장르인 현대발레의 탄생배경과 오늘날까지의 흐름을 파악하여 그 특성들을 살펴보았으며, 지리 킬리안의 성장배경과 그가 가장 활발하게 활동을 하였던 1978년에서 1999년 사이의 작품 활동을 연구하였다. 다음으로 지리 킬리안의 대표적인 작품 「신포니에타」, 「카쿠야 히메」, 「달콤한 꿈」을 주제 및 구성, 움직임, 음악 및 무대미술, 예술적 의미측면에서 살펴본 안무의 특징을 연구하였다. 이와 같이 지리 킬리안의 작품을 연구한 결과 첫째, 지리 킬리안은 순수한 움직임 하나하나에 기초한 안무방식으로 고전발레와 현대무용을 과감히 혼용하여 그 움직임이 투명하고 스피디하며 매우 극적인 특성을 지니고 있으며 둘째, 음악을 비롯한 조명, 무대미술 등의 예술과 상호간의 밀접한 연계성을 띄며 조화를 이루고 있다. 특히, 그의 뛰어난 음악성은 킬리안의 작품에 없어서는 안 될 요소로서 무용수의 신체와 정신을 음악과 조화롭게 반응시켜 음악의 시각화를 가능케 하였다. 셋째, 지리 킬리안은 전반적으로 풍부한 작가적 상상력을 토대로 한 상징적인 안무를 하였으며 80년대 후반부터의 작품들은 점차 더 추상적이고 초현실적인 경향을 나타내고 있다. 본 연구는 오늘날 현대발레계의 새로운 진로를 개척하고 중요한 역할을 한 세계적인 안무가 지리 킬리안의 창작 스타일 연구를 통하여 우리나라 현대발레의 발전을 도모할 수 있는 안무방법의 가능성을 제공하면서 다양한 창의적 예술작업의 방향성 및 그 중요성을 밝히는데 본 연구의 의의를 갖는다.;Ballet of these days may be largely divided into 'classic ballet' that persists existing tradition and 'modern ballet' that attempts more creative and new modification out of the fixed formality. The movement to come out of the basic formality and contents begun from the end of 19th century has come to emerge as modern ballet through the resolute renovation by a choreographer, 'Michel Fokine'. Beginning with it, many choreographers with radical idea have been attempting creative challenges out of the past strict systems and developing diverse choreography systems and through their continuous efforts, modern ballet has come to be firmly established as a pattern of dance art today. Jiri Kylian, who has been in such times of transformation and growth of modern ballet, built up sensual speedy independent dance design style based on mixture and compromise that could be considered to be characters of modern ballet and is a representative modern ballet choreographer of 20th century with more insight and influence than any other one of the times stretching vigorous work creating activities designing dances for more than 70 works for almost 20 years. Jiri Kylian was born in Chekoslovakia and began to learn ballet at 9 years and became art director of Netherlands Dance Theater(NDT) at 28 years and then led NDT to a dance group of international level piling up a lot of achievements and international reputation. He has been creating sharp and delicate works based on command of dance language using peculiar symbolization and minimal emotion and perfect musicality thorough analysis and profound interpretation on his own for several years. This thesis was to study on his inclination of choreography by examining those dance activities and world of works of Jiri Kylian. First, grasped the background of birth of modern ballet that is Jiri Kylian's genre of work creation and the current until today and examined the characters of them and investigated the background of growth of Jiri Kylian and his work creating activities between 1978 and 1999 during when he worked most actively. Next, studied inclination of choreography reviewing Jiri Kylian's representing works i. e. [Sinfonietta], [KakuyaHime], [Sweet Dreams] from the point of view of subject and composition, movement, music and stage art and artistic significance. The result of the study on the works of Jiri Kylian indicated that, first, Jiri Kylian resolutely mingled classic ballet and modern dance with choreography system based on each of pure motions and the motions have transparent, speedy and very dramatic character. Second, the motions preform harmony with arts i. e. music as well as lighting, stage art with close linkage. Especially, his outstanding musicality that is a factor that can't be excluded from Kylian's work had the bodies and spirits of dancers react to music in symphony and thereby enabled the music to become nce designs based on ample authorial imagination and the works since visual. Third, Jiri Kylian has been generally producing symbolic dathe end of 1980s are more and more displaying abstract and surrealistic tendency. This study has placed the significance on revealing the directional character of diverse creative art works and the importance providing the possibility of choreography system that can attempt development of modern ballet in South Korea through study on work creation style of Jiri Kylian who developed the new way to go for modern ballet of these days and served important role.
