종교적 성향을 가진 미국 현대무용작품의 특성 연구

Abstract

인류의 역사가 시작된 동시에 종교와 예술은 인간의 생활과 밀접한 관계를 유지하여 왔는데 예술 중에서도 특히 무용은 인간의 육체로 감정을 표현하는 동시에 종교적 감정의 직접적인 탈출구가 되어왔다. 종교적 감정의 직접적인 표출로는 아마 상징적인 동작을 담은 예술이 처음일 것이다. 그것은 인간의 몸 이외에 그 어떤 것도 필요하지 않기 때문이다. 발레를 거부하면서 시작한 현대무용은 새로운 스타일과 자유로운 테크닉을 추구하였는데 특히 미국에서 현대무용의 역사를 빛내는 많은 무용가들이 배출되어 활동하였고, 각 무용가들에 의하여 종교적 성향을 가지는 작품들이 많이 만들어졌다. 따라서 본 논문은 종교적 성향을 가지는 미국의 현대무용 작품을 구체적으로 분류하여 그 속에 담긴 다양한 표현방법을 분석해보고 각 특징을 비교하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 미국의 현대무용 중에서 세 명의 무용가들에 의해 안무된 작품을 분석하였는데 루스 세인트 데니스의 작품 『백옥』과 호세 리몽의 『반역자』, 그리고 엘빈 에일리의『계시』를 자넷 에드쉐드의 분석이론에 근거하여 생애와 활동, 주제 및 내용, 움직임 특성, 무대효과 및 의상, 종교적 의미로 구체적으로 나누어 연구해 보았다. 루스 세인트 데니스의 작품 『백옥』은 불교적 성향을 가지는 작품으로서 관음여신의 위엄과 자비로운 마음을 주인공인 관음이 신의 마음을 직접 전달하고자 하였다. 정적인 움직임을 많이 사용하였고 추상적인 소품을 활용하며 신비로운 분위기를 더했다. 무대사용은 십자가 패턴을 사용하여 엄격하고 제한된 분위기에서 한결같은 관음여신의 마음을 표현하고자 하였다. 호세 리몽의 작품 『반역자』는 기독교 성향을 가지며 성경에서 인간의 모습으로 오신 예수님과 이를 배신하는 유다이야기를 그대로 표현한 스토리 위주의 작품이다. 동작의 표현은 추상적이며 소품활용에 있어서는 드라마틱하게 사용되어졌다. 원형의 대형이 많이 사용되었으며 집중형의 무대패턴을 많이 사용함으로서 의식적이고 순종적인 분위기를 더해주었다. 인간의 죄악된 모습들을 마임을 통하여 표현하였으며 성경의 이야기를 그대로 전달하는데 목적을 두었다. 기독교적 성향을 띄는 엘빈 에일리의 작품 『계시』는 노예생활의 고통을 종교를 통해 승화하고 다시 기쁨의 경지에 오르는 사람들을 표현하였다. 전체적 분위기는 매우 희망적이고 적극적인 움직임을 하며 일상적인 소품을 사용함으로서 이해하기 쉽도록 표현되었다. 이 작품에서는 일직선적인 무대패턴과 집중형의 무대패턴을 주로 사용함으로서 역동적이고 강렬한 느낌을 더해주며 가족적이고 따뜻한 느낌까지 주었다. 이상의 세 작품에서 모두 흰색의 소품이나 의상을 사용했다는 공통점을 가지는데 이는 흰색의 의미가 순수하고 청결함을 나타내는 것처럼 작품들을 통해 순수해지고자 하는 인간의 마음을 간접적으로 표현해 준 것이라고 할 수 있겠다. 또한 무대패턴의 사용에 있어서 주로 일직선형의 패턴과 원형의 패턴, 집중형의 패턴이 많이 나타났는데 이는 엄격하면서도 의식적이고 순종적인 분위기를 전달해주었다. 종교적 성향을 가지는 작품인 만큼 안정된 분위기속에서 조화로움을 강조하였으며, 직접적이거나 간접적으로 움직임을 통해 종교적 성향을 표현하였다. 이상에서 알 수 있듯이 종교적 성향을 가진 미국 현대무용 작품 속에는 각 안무가들의 표현방법에 따라 다양하게 나타날 수 있으며 종교적 의미를 내포한 움직임들을 독창적인 영역으로 이끌어 낼 수 있다는 확신이 들면서 그 중요성이 부각되었다. 이러한 선행연구가 종교무용의 획일적인 형태가 아닌 다양한 형태의 무용으로 발전하기 위한 발판이 될 것이며, 종교무용이라는 하나의 예술장르로 탄생되기 위한 좋은 시발점이 될 것이다.;Religion and art has been an indispensable part of human life since the beginning of history. In particular, dancing has been a way of expressing emotions using the human body and has been a direct escape for religious passion. The art of using symbolic motions was probably the first way of directly expressing religious emotions due to the fact that the human body is all that is required. Modern dance has started by rejecting ballet pursuing new styles and various techniques. Especially, many American modern dancers have been produce that shed light to the history of modern dance and created many religious performances. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to specifically classify American modern dance with religious inclinations, analyze various expression methods and compare each feature. In American modern dance, ‘White Jade' by Ruth Saint Denis, ‘Traitor' by Jose Limon, and ’Revelation' by Alvin Ailey were analyzed based on the analysis theory of Janet Adshead. Each piece was studied in several aspects: life & events, theme & content, the characteristics of movements, stage effects & costumes, and religious meaning. ‘White Jade' by Ruth Saint Denis has Buddhist aspects in which the protagonist the Goddess of Mercy directly delivers the dignity and mercy of the goddess. Static movements mostly compose the piece and used abstract props making a mysterious atmosphere. The stage was used in a cross pattern which gave a stern and restricted effect trying to express the goddess' mind. ‘Traitor' by Jose Limon has Christian aspects and is based on the story of Jesus Christ in the form of human and the betrayal of Judas. Movements are very abstract and props were used dramatically. Circular formations were mostly used and used centered patterns adding a ritual and obedient effect. Human sins were expressed through mime and the purpose was mainly to deliver Bible stories as they are. ‘Revelation' by Alvin Ailey also has Christian features. It expresses the sublimation of suffering as a slave into religion and the regaining of peace and happiness. The overall atmosphere is very hopeful and movements are aggressive. Familiar and daily props were used to allow easy understanding. Linear and centered patterns give a dynamic and strong feeling and moreover a familial and warm sense. The previous three pieces are in common by the fact that white costumes and props were used as a tool to indirectly express human desire to become pure since the color ‘white' implies purity. Also, linear, circular, and centered patterns were used and formed a strict, ritual and obedient atmosphere. As pieces with religious inclinations, harmony within a stable environment was emphasized and direct and indirect movements expressed religious inclinations. As mentioned above, you can see that expression methods vary depending on choreographers and that religiously symbolic movements can be original. This research will become a foothold for religious dance to develop into various forms of dancing and will initiate religious dance to become an artistic genre.
