사이버 공간에서 소통하는 몸의 이미지

Abstract

Today, we experience the cyber space as a more important living space than the real space. And as the cyber space becomes a social space with human life, it begins to create a new order for our real world by exerting a social power exceeding the reality. The cyber space emerging as a major part of our life seems to be similar to reality, but it co-exists confusingly with the real space, being unseparable from it. This study was motivated by an intention to view a Body as human being itself and thereby, understand it as subject of communication and active and flexible intermediate space for an interaction through communication. The purpose of this study was to express a Body as subject of communication and real object communicating in the cyber space. For this purpose, the Body was reviewed theoretically from an angle of phenomenological view and then, the cyber space emerging as a major part of our today's life owing to development of computer and information & communication was examined. Then, the researcher expressed a Body and explained about it, and thereupon, reviewed the human looks between real and cyber spaces. As a result of expressing a Body in such a way, the researcher could express the Body communicating in the cyber space. In terms of methods of expression, the researcher attempted to describe repetition and overlapping methods used for the entire work as well as the characteristics of vinyl, bolt and nut. The Body was expressed in this way, and the results thereof were discussed. Then, the works were analyzed centering around the atmospheres created by their forms and material properties to have a better understanding of the Body as an intermediary space. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; The motives of the universal impression made from the Body were used to express some organic forms with the minimal impressions reminiscent of the Body. As a result, a view of the Body as human being itself could be presented first, while only the Body could be highlighted with diverse interpretations or specific expressions removed. Second, the anonymity in the cyber space could be expressed, which suggests that men exist anonymous and exchange with each other in the cyber space. With the assembly of bolts and nuts, the organic form of the Body was repeated and overlapped to be expressed as a space of the Body. Due to repetition and overlapping, a sense of depth was created between transparent vinyl sheets, while an illusionary visual effect of virtuality was produced from the space. Such sense and effect urge us to imagine a space other than real one, while the Body shows and mediates a human look communicating in the space not subject to any physical action. And the soft vinyl and the mechanic volts/nuts were combined to represent our reality where analogue and digital co-exist. Transparency and flexibility of vinyl helped to express the interactions through communication in the cyber space as well as the Body mediated. First of all, flexibility connotes a variable inside, and next, it implies that it should rely on an external force to define itself. After all, the researcher attempted to show the possibility that the Body's space mediating between cyber and real spaces may be flexible and variable, and that the cyber space is formed with the Body's spaces entangled with each other, and that a loose entanglement would be more tightened by an active interaction. Transparency signifies an open space, which suggests that possibility that the severed boundaries could be extinguished for some mutual interactions. The researcher tried to express a co-existence of digital and analogue spaces or real and cyber spaces by combining the immaterial sense of transparent and smooth vinyl with the mechanic sense of bolts and nuts, and thus, could express the resultant Body communicating between cyber and real spaces. Lastly, since an image of the cyber space was installed in a space, the audience could feel their own Bodies communicating with others, while experiencing the space. On the other hand, the audience could feel their Bodies becoming parts of the work during their experiences in the space. After all, the researcher could express such a Body communicating in the cyber space. People living their present life wish to find the freedom of mind which exists inside because they want to look back themselves inside transcending spaces and realize the value of their existence by getting out of their life in the closed space.;오늘날 인간은 사이버 공간을 점점 현실 공간보다 더 중요한 생활공간으로 경험하고 있다. 그리고 사이버 공간이 인간의 생활을 이루는 사회적 공간이 됨에 따라, 사이버 공간은 현실을 능가하는 사회적 힘을 가지고 현실세계에 새로운 질서를 만들어 내고 있다. 생활의 주요 부분으로 등장한 사이버 공간은 현실과는 유사하지만 다른, 그러나 현실공간과는 뗄래야 뗄 수 없는 관계를 가지고 혼재(混在)하고 있다. 본 연구는 몸을 인간 그 자체로 보는 시각을 가지고, 몸을 사이버 공간에서 소통(communication)의 주체이자 능동적이고 유동적인 매개 공간으로 이해하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 소통의 주체이자 실체인 인간의 몸이 사이버 공간에서 소통하는 모습을 표현하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이론적 배경에서는 몸을 현상학적 시각에서 살펴보고, 컴퓨터와 정보통신의 발달로 인해 오늘날 생활의 주요 부분으로 등장한 사이버 공간에 대해 알아보았다. 표현내용에서는 작업으로 제시된 몸에 대해 설명하고, 현실공간과 사이버 공간의 차이에서 나타나는 인간의 모습을 살펴보았다. 이와 같은 인간의 모습을 몸으로 표현함으로써 인간의 몸이 사이버 공간에서 소통하는 모습을 나타낼 수 있었다. 표현방법에서는 비닐과 볼트, 너트가 주는 특성과 작품 전반에 사용되었던 반복과 중첩에 대하여 설명하였고, 이와 같은 방법으로 몸을 표현하고 제시하여 얻어지는 결과를 밝혔다. 작품 분석에서는 작품의 형태와 재료의 특성이 나타내는 분위기를 중심으로 하여, 몸을 매개 공간으로 이해하는 측면에서 진행되었다. 본 연구를 통해 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 인간의 몸에서 나타나는 보편적인 인상 모티브로 하여 몸을 연상시키는 최소한의 인상만을 남긴 채 유기적 형상으로 표현하였다. 이는 첫째, 몸을 인간 그 자체로 보는 시각을 나타낼 수 있었으며, 구체적 표현으로 가질 수 있는 다양한 해석이 제거되어 몸만을 강조할 수 있었다. 그리고 둘째, 사이버 공간에서 익명성을 나타낼 수 있었다. 이는 사이버 공간에서 인간은 익명으로 존재하고 교류함을 보여준다. 볼트와 너트의 조립으로 몸의 유기적 형상은 반복, 중첩되어 몸 공간으로 표현된다. 반복과 중첩으로 인해 투명한 비닐 사이에 느껴지는 깊이와 공간에서 오는 환영적인 가상의 시각적 효과는 현실과는 또 다른 공간을 상상하도록 해주어 물리적 작용이 미치지 않는 공간에서 소통하는 인간의 모습을 보여주고 매개하는 인간의 몸 공간을 드러낼 수 있었다. 그리고 연질의 비닐과 기계적 느낌의 볼트와 너트의 결합은 아날로그와 디지털이 공존하는 현실을 나타낼 수 있었다. 비닐의 투명성과 유연성은 사이버 공간에서 이루어지는 소통을 통한 상호작용과 이를 매개하는 몸 공간을 나타낼 수 있었다. 유연함은 첫째, 내부가 가변적이라는 것을 둘째, 스스로를 정의하기 위해 외부의 힘에 의존 한다는 것을 함축한다. 이는 사이버 공간과 현실공간에서 이를 매개하는 몸 공간이 유동적이고 가변적이며, 사이버 공간은 각각의 몸 공간들이 서로 얽혀 이루어지고 엉성한 얽힘은 활발한 상호작용으로 더 강렬해지는 가능성을 보여주고자 하였다. 투명성은 열린 공간을 나타내며, 이는 단절된 경계의 소멸과 그로 인한 상호작용의 가능성을 보여주고자 하였다. 투명함과 비닐의 매끈함에서 느껴지는 비물질적 느낌에 볼트와 너트의 기계적인 느낌을 더함으로써 디지털 공간과 아날로그의 공간, 현실공간과 사이버 공간의 공존을 표현하고자 하였으며, 이렇게 이루어진 몸 형상은 사이버 공간과 현실공간이 공존하는 현실에서 소통하는 인간의 모습을 나타낼 수 있었다. 마지막으로 사이버 공간의 이미지를 공간에 설치함으로써 관람자는 공간을 경험하면서 자신의 몸으로 소통함을 느낀다. 한편 관람자가 그 공간에서 경험하는 동시에 관람자의 몸은 이미 작품의 한 부분을 이루며, 경험하는 그 모습은 사이버 공간에서 소통하는 몸을 나타낼 수 있었다.
