NIE를 활용한 경제교육의 효과

Abstract

Korean economy has experienced drastic changes in recent years. Still, economy textbooks used in schools deal in elementary and fundamental economic theories and thus fail to reflect all these changes. Newspapers can be considered the most ideal textbooks, which help solve these problems facing our current economic education, as they offer new and diverse economic information on a daily basis. NIE can be a desirable approach to effective economic education if it is used properly. NIE was first introduced in Korea in mid 1990s and has been applied to a variety of curriculum including Korean language, science and mathematics, but it has not been widely utilized in high school economy classes and there has not been sufficient research work on the approach. Against the backdrop, it is necessary to explore ways to utilize newspapers for economy classes in high school and analyze the effects that NIE has on economic education as a whole. This study aims to suggest various NIE methods that can be used for high school economy classes, and to examine the effects that NIE-based economic education has on academic performance and learning attitude of students. First, an extensive review has been done on previous researches and studies on economic education and NIE, and the theoretical background including the concept, objectives and necessity of NIE has been examined. Second, for empirical research, an economy class in which an NIE-based teaching model is applied, was conducted, using 'Ⅷ. National Economy and Rational Choices', a unit of the social science textbook used for the first grade students in senior high school, or 10th grade students in the 7th education program. Students created a text material based on which they will carry out activities, by gathering news and information from papers relating to the class objectives and NIE activity program. Based on the text material, the syllabus was drawn up. Third, the study was conducted on tenth grade students in college-bound high schools located in Bundang-gu Sungnam City, where the author is currently teaching. Of the total 14 classes, 4 classes were chosen randomly and they were divided into two groups: one group of two classes who will be taught by NIE-based teaching method, and the other group who will study in a conventional way. The experiment was conducted 7 times. Forth, in order to verify the effects of NIE on economic education, students were evaluated for their academic performance and learning attitude. The academic performance evaluation consists of 20 questions on areas of knowledge, function, values and attitude. The learning attitude test has 19 questions on subcategories including general learning attitude, concentration level, learning skills application, and voluntary learning. To analyze the test results, the t verification of SPSS 10.0 was used, with a 95% confidence level. The summary of the findings is as follows. First, the results of the academic performance test on the relevant economy lectures, the NIE-applied group achieved a higher average on economy-related knowledge, functions, values and attitude, than their counterparts in the group who was taught in a conventional way. The difference in the scores was statistically significant. Second, the learning attitude test showed similar results. The NIE group gained higher scores than their peers in all areas including general learning attitude, concentration level, learning skills application and voluntary learning. And the difference was statistically significant. The study found that though one cannot say a particular teaching method for economic education is absolutely superior to the others, NIE-based class is more effective than the textbook-oriented conventional teaching method in terms of improving academic performance and forming positive learning attitudes. Therefore, it is suggested that for economic education, schools should encourage teachers to abandon their dependency on textbooks and adopt the NIE teaching method. In order to make it possible, the current education system needs to be changed to allow more research work be done and to facilitate information exchange to develop NIE teaching materials.;최근 우리나라의 경제상황은 급속하게 변화하고 있다. 그러나 실제 교육현장에서 활용되고 있는 경제 교과서를 중심으로 한 교재는 초보적이고 원론적인 경제이론을 다루고 있어 이러한 변화를 모두 반영할 수 없는 것이 사실이다. 신문은 매일 새롭고 다양한 경제정보를 제공해주므로 경제교육에 있어서의 이러한 문제를 극복할 수 있는 가장 이상적인 교재라 할 수 있으며, NIE(신문활용교육)가 올바르게 이루어진다면 바람직한 경제교육으로 접근이 가능할 것이다. NIE는 1990년대 중반 우리나라에 소개되어 국어, 과학, 수학 등 여러 교과활동에 활용되고 있으나 아직 중·고등학교 경제교육에서의 활용 및 연구가 미흡한 실정이다. 따라서 학교경제교육에 신문을 활용하는 방안을 제시하고 NIE가 경제교육에 미치는 효과에 대해 모색해 볼 필요가 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 고등학교 경제수업에 적용할 수 있는 다양한 NIE 활용법을 제시하고, 경제교육에서의 NIE의 활용이 학업성취도 및 학습태도에 미치는 효과를 검증하고자 한다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위하여 첫째, 경제교육과 NIE에 관련된 선행연구를 살펴보고, 경제교육과 NIE의 개념, 목표, 필요성 등 이론적 배경을 고찰하였다. 둘째, 경험적 연구를 위해 제7차 교육과정에서의 10학년인 고등학교 1학년 <사회>교과 중 ‘Ⅷ. 국민 경제와 합리적 선택’ 단원을 중심으로 NIE 교수·학습 모형을 적용하여 경제수업을 실시하였다. 학습목표 및 NIE 활동 프로그램과 관련된 신문자료를 수집하여 학생들이 활동할 학습지를 제작하였으며 이를 바탕으로 수업지도안을 구안하였다. 셋째, 본 연구는 연구자가 근무하는 성남시 분당구 소재 인문계 고등학교 1학년 학생을 대상으로 하였으며, 1학년 전체 14개 학급 중에서 연구자 임의로 4개 학급을 추출하여 NIE 수업을 적용할 실험집단과 전통적 수업을 적용할 비교집단으로 각각 2개 학급을 선정하여 7차시에 걸쳐 실험하였다. 넷째, 경제교육에 있어서 NIE의 효과를 검증하기 위하여 학업성취도 검사 및 학습태도 검사를 실시하였다. 학업성취도 평가지는 지식, 기능, 가치·태도 영역별로 평가문항을 추출하여 20문항으로 구성하였다. 그리고 학습태도 검사지는 학습에 대한 일반적 태도, 경제수업에 대한 주의집중 태도, 학습기술적용 태도, 자율학습 태도 등의 하위 영역에 대하여 19문항으로 구성하였다. 검사 결과의 분석을 위해 SPSS 10.0 프로그램의 t 검정을 사용하였으며 95%의 신뢰수준에서 검정하였다. 연구 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경제단원에 대한 학업성취도 검사 결과 NIE를 활용하여 경제수업을 받은 집단이 전통적 수업을 적용한 집단보다 경제 관련 지식, 기능, 가치·태도 영역에서 평균이 높게 나타났으며 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였다. 둘째, 경제수업에 대한 학습태도 검사 결과 NIE 수업을 적용한 집단이 전통적 수업을 적용한 집단보다 학습에 대한 일반적 태도, 경제수업에 대한 주의집중 태도, 학습기술적용 태도, 자율학습 태도 등의 영역에서 평균이 높게 나타났으며 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였다. 이러한 결과를 종합하여 볼 때 경제교육의 교수·학습 방법 중 어느 것이 절대적으로 우수하다고 단정할 수 없지만, 경제교육에 있어서 NIE의 활용한 수업이 교과서 중심의 전통적 수업에 비해 학업성취도의 향상 및 긍정적인 학습태도 형성에 효과적이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 경제교육시 기존의 교과서 위주의 수업에서 과감히 탈피하여 현실을 반영하는 신문을 활용한 수업이 활성화되어야 한다. 이를 위해서는 경제교육에 활용할 수 있는 NIE 수업 자료의 연구 및 정보 교류를 위한 제도적 여건 마련, NIE에 대한 교육당국과 신문사의 지속적인 관심과 협조가 요구된다.
