봉산탈춤에 나타난 공동체 의식에 관한 연구

Abstract

우리는 흔히 인간을 정치적 동물, 또는 사회적 존재라고 부른다. 이것은 인간의 본질 규명, 즉 인간다움 규명의 명제이다. 이것은 인류역사의 오랜 역사적 경험을 통하여 타당성과 보편성을 가지고 있다. 그러나 오늘날의 현대사회는 개인주의적 성격이 강한 사회가 됨으로써 극심한 위기에 처해있다. 우리나라는 빠른 산업화과정을 거쳐오면서 경제적으로나 양적으로는 발전하였지만 의식의 발전은 그에 미치지 못하여 많은 문제를 낳고 있다. 즉, 현대 문명이 가져온 눈부신 물질문명은 인간의 생활을 합리화(合理化)하였고 능률화(能率化) 하였다. 그러므로 인간은 물질의 협력에 눌려 공동체의식의 약화로 이어지고 있는 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 봉산탈춤에 나타난 공동체의식을 연구함으로써 이기주의와 개인주의적 성향을 띤 현대사회가 강한 집단성을 통해 보다 돈독한 인정과 두터운 연대의식의 사회가 되는데 있어 봉산탈춤이 지니고 있는 공동체의식은 그 역할을 해낼 수 있다는 점을 밝히고자 하였다. 탈춤은 민중 공동체의식의 소산으로써 놀이하는 자와 구경하는 자가 함께 놀이를 만들어가는 대동놀이이다. 그 중 대동놀이적 특성이 강하게 나타나는 봉산탈춤에 초점을 두어 공동체의식을 추출해 보기로 한다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구는 문헌적 연구와 시청각 자료 연구를 기반으로 하였다. 봉산탈춤에 나타나는 공동체의식을 이해하기 위해서는 먼저 공동체의식의 개념에 대한 연구를 통해 개념 정립이 필요하고 그 다음 탈춤의 기원과 봉산탈춤의 유래, 사회적 배경들을 통하여 먼저 전체적인 공동체적 성격을 파악하였다. 그리고 봉산탈춤의 춤의 내용, 과장의 구성, 갈등의 구조와 내용에 대해 연구하고 이러한 내용과 형식을 바탕으로 봉산탈춤에 나타나는 내적 특성들과 기능들을 추출하여 연구하였다. 그 결과 탈춤은 기층문화권의 한 표현 양식으로 전승되어 내려온 한국의 전통문화의 하나로써 세상의 못된 일, 그릇된 일들을 들추어내어 비판함으로써 이러한 탈을 들어내어 줄이고 없애는 민속춤으로써 인간사회의 허위나 위선 등을 풍자와 해학을 통해 비판하여 떨쳐버림으로써 공동체적 응집을 이루었다. 신명풀이 및 카타르시스, 놀이 및 축제의 여러 가지 내적특성들과 제의 및 생활의 기능과 갈등해소 및 치유의 기능들은 분리되어 나타나거나 정의 내려지는 것이 아니라 서로 영향을 주면서 결국에는 공동체의식이라는 하나의 대표적인 정서로 나타날 수 있다. 이러한 공동체의식은 개인들이 함께 모여있는 집단을 응집시켜 하나의 마음을 가지고 느끼고 생각하게 되는 대동놀이로 발전하게 되는 것이다. 이로써 봉산탈춤의 내적특성과 기능들을 연구하는 것은 현대 문명과 과학기술의 발달로 ‘우리’라는 의식보다는 ‘나’라는 의식이 강하게 나타나고 있는 사회에서 탈춤이 집단적인 응집을 통해 강한 연대의식을 느낄 수 있게 하는 중요한 매개체가 된다는 것을 규명하고 있다.;Frequently, human beings are called political animals or social beings. Such a statement may well represent human essence, namely a thesis of defining the humanity. Its validity and universality has been proven through the long human history and experiences. However, today's modern society becomes strongly individualistic, posing an extremely serious crisis for mankind. Korea has grown economically and quantitatively through her rapid industrialization, but people's consciousness does not seem to catch up with the external growth, causing various problems. In other words, the splendid material civilization achieved in our modern society has served to make our life reasonable and efficient. However, our community spirit has been weakened by mammonism. Under such circumstances, this study was aimed at reviewing the community spirit shown in Bongsan Mask Dance and thereby, determine the roles of the community spirit as shown in the group dance in consolidating an amicable humanity and a close solidarity for our modern society dominated by egoism and individualism. Mask dance or talchum is a group-minded play, a product of our community spirit wherein players and audience make the play together. This study was focused on Bongsan Mask Dance which was characterized strongly by the group-minded play to review our community spirit. For this study, relevant literature and audio/video materials were reviewed extensively. In order to understand the community spirit shown in Bongsan Mask Dance, it was deemed necessary to establish relevant concepts first by examining the concepts of our community spirit and then, understand the community spirit at large by examining origins and social backgrounds of mask dances and Bongsan Mask Dance in particular. Then, contents, exaggerated expressions, conflict structure and contents of Bongsan Mask Dance were reviewed and thereupon, internal attributes and functions of the dance were analyzed. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. Mask dances have been inherited as base people's modes of expressions. They were parts of our traditional culture, which revealed or 'unmasked' and criticized the wrong and bad things of the world to eradicate them. Namely, the folk dances aimed to criticize the falsifications or hypocrisies of our human society through parody and humor to consolidate the community. In mask dances, such various internal attributes as Shinmyoung resolution, catharsis and other play and festive ones, and such functions as ritual and living, and resolution and treatment of conflicts were not separate or defined differently from each other, but were affecting each other to express a model emotion or the community spirit. Such a community spirit served to condense the groups of individuals and thereby, develop the dance into the group-minded plays performed with the unity of minds, feeling and thoughts. This study analyzing the internal characteristics and functions of Bongsan Mask Dance may be significant in that in this society where the sense of 'me' than 'us' is stronger due to development of modern civilization and science and technology, mask dances may well be important media consolidating our sense of solidarity through a group-wise condensation.
