Abstract
Simplicity attracts people's minds and hearts. People are fond of simplicity. However, people pursue simplicity not only because of personal preference but also because of the cognitive efficiency involved in recognizing objects and remembering them in their brains. In order to conduct an in-depth investigation on this matter, the present study conducted a survey so as to i) determine what types of visual conceptions there are and ii) discover what sort of simplified core elements can be found among these various types of visual ideations. Drawing on these core elements discovered from the survey, the researcher prepared and hosted a solo exhibition of formative art. I have performed various designing projects using geometrically simplified forms for a long time. However, I have discovered that expressing an accurate meaning with minimum amount of elements is far more difficult than expressing a detailed meaning with multiple elements. In order to convey accurate meaning with minimal elements, core elements need to be extracted and others omitted. Nonetheless, determining and choosing what is at core is not an easy task. Abridged and simplified expressions of form can be found, for instance, in the geometrically simplified form of an apple―remember: we usually draw a circle and add a stalk―, children's drawings, and ancient mural paintings. As can be seen, there lies a core, essential form that portrays the heart of an object. Thus, in the cognitive process of perceiving an object, we simplify and only remember its core, essential form; and when having to express this object, we extract what we remember i.e. we draw what we have cognitively recognized and processed as depicting the core, essential traits of the object. The present study defines visual ideation as this core, essential form that simplifies and abridges the main traits of an object and is used by people when having to express the object. In order to provide objective and scientific evidence that supports my theory of visual ideation as well as investigate what types of visual ideations there are, a survey was conducted. In detail, 20 words were selected based on the semantic typology of Korean nouns, and these 20 words were presented to subjects who were asked to quickly draw the image of these words. The various forms that subjects drew were then classified and analyzed so as to statistically demonstrate the existence of any common core forms. This survey aimed to confirm the existence of visual ideations in the subject group; and if they did exist, to identify the form of these visual ideations. Through this survey, the present research attempted to i) discover what sort of visual ideations subjects had on a series of tangible and intangible concepts, ii) find out what archetypical forms existed, and iii) if so, investigate what sort of archetypical forms portrayed common traits of various objects. Subjects were classified into three groups: adults, elementary school students, and kindergarteners. The research hypotheses were confirmed using chi-square analysis for suitability and independence verification. Analysis of the survey via independence verification confirmed that visual ideations in certain forms did exist for each word although differences were found between and among subject groups and words. Words used in the survey were classified into substance and non-substance words; and substance words were more frequently found to have affiliations with major core forms and thus, had more archetypical forms of visual ideations than non-substance words. Among substance words, for example, the word that showed the highest typicality in visual ideations was “fire.” All subjects in all three age groups clearly shared an identical form of a visual ideation for “fire.” Among non-substance words, on the other hand, the word that showed the highest typicality in visual ideations was “love.” All subjects in all three age groups commonly identified “love” with the iconic form of the “heart.” Thus, the present research has revealed that although “love” is a non-substance word, it has been visually conceptualized in the minds of people from early age through learning or indirect experience. Because non-substance words cannot be directly experienced or remembered through the eye, whether or not someone holds a visual ideation of them can be influenced by learning or indirect experience. Additionally, non-substance words have been categorized into situational and abstract classes; and it was discovered that they were expressed i) by using substitutes, ii) by citing examples from experience, or iii) by citing symbols obtained from learning. Drawing on the core forms extracted from the abovementioned statistical analysis, I compiled the forms of visual conceptions of 20 words and created a series of artworks. Among them, ten works were displayed in my solo exhibition. There, the works exhibited were portrayals of the visual ideations of hobgoblin, flower, puppy, cat, pig, water, hope, freedom, happiness, and autumn. Through these works, I attempted to pursue essence, purity, and simplicity. By using geometrical forms and simple expressions of simple proportions, I tried to express core forms. At the same time, I resorted to expressions that depict the essence of an object and candid expressions that do away with unnecessary ornamental decorations so as to show the simple beauty of moderation. The present study conducted a detailed survey and analyzed its results and developed them into artworks; and thus, it is expected that this study can present scientific grounds for future research on basic formative arts.;단순함은 인간이 좋아하는 키워드가 되고 있다.
