조선후기 강령탈춤에 나타난 사회적 기능에 관한 연구

Abstract

예술은 사회적 산물이다. 특히 한 민족의 춤과 예술은 그 민족의 보편적 감정뿐 아니라 그것이 연희된 시대 사람들의 사상과 감정까지 반영하고 있는데 그 중 탈춤을 대표적인 예로 들 수 있다. 탈춤은 공동체 삶에 깔려있는 민중적 사회성을 강하게 반영하고 있는 민속연희로 본 연구에서는 이러한 탈춤 가운데 해서탈춤의 하나인 강령탈춤이 그 가치와 의미가 잘 보존되어 있음에도 불구하고 봉산탈춤에 비해 연구가 미비하게 이루어졌다는 점에 주목하였다. 강령은 황해도의 비교적 외진 지역으로 고립되어 있기 때문에 민중 간에 사회적 소통이 미흡하다고 생각할지 모르나 사실 강령탈춤을 살펴보면 그 안에도 사회적 기능이 크게 두드러져 있는 것을 볼 수 있으므로, 이에 강령탈춤의 사회적 측면의 가치를 재조명하고자 하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 본 연구를 위해 탈춤의 기원, 표현성의 개념, 조선후기의 시대적 배경, 강령탈춤의 사회적 흐름을 살펴보았고 강령탈춤의 유래 및 전승과정, 강령탈춤의 가면과 의상 및 소도구, 춤의 내용 및 특징, 특징적 과장의 의미 및 내용을 살펴보았다. 그리고 춤과 재담의 극적 연행성을 알아보았으며 강령탈춤에 나타나는 표현성을 분석하여 이를 풍자성, 제의성, 예술성의 측면으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 또한 이를 토대로 조선후기 강령탈춤의 표현성을 통한 사회적 비판의 기능, 치유의 기능, 소통의 기능적 역할에 대해 찾고자하였다. 이에 강령탈춤에 나타난 표현을 통해 드러난 강령탈춤의 사회적 기능은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 탈과 재담, 그리고 등장인물의 행위를 통해 타락한 승려의 모습, 품위 없이 격이 떨어진 양반의 모습, 그리고 이를 은근히 조롱하는 하인의 모습, 그리고 서민의 가난한 삶과 봉건 가족제도의 모순을 풍자적으로 표현하였으며 이를 통해 조선후기 민중들은 그들을 억압하는 신분제도의 갈등을 해소 할 수 있었다. 둘째, 귀면형탈, 장삼춤, 재물대감과 양반을 통한 신앙적 행동의 묘사, 진오귀굿 등을 통해 액을 물리치고 신에게 길흉화복을 빌며 원혼을 천도하는 제의적 표현을 통해 치유와 재생의 장으로써의 탈춤의 원초적 기능을 재발견 할 수 있었다. 셋째, 승려에 대한 비판의 마음을 표현한 목중탈과 장삼춤, 양반과 하인의 대립을 보여주는 탈과 재담 및 대무와 군무, 그리고 미얄할미, 미얄영감, 용산삼개집의 탈과 복색, 노래 및 진혼굿 등의 예술적 표현을 통해 탈춤은 사회 전반의 문제점에 대한 비판들을 밖으로 표출하고 감정을 정화시켜 화해와 화합의 소통의 장으로써 기능하였다. 오늘날 인간의 소통에 있어서 메스미디어에 치중하는 가운데 주요한 문화재의 핵심만을 남긴 채 우리의 전통문화는 사라져 가고 도외시 되어가고 있다. 이렇게 많은 무형의 예술적 자산들이 자칫 우리의 무관심 속에 사라져버릴 수도 있는 현실 속에서 본 연구가 강령탈춤의 사회적 측면에 하나의 자료로써 기여할 수 있기를 바란다. ;Art is a social product. Especially, dance and art of a nation reflects not only general emotion of the culture but also the ideas of the people, and mask dance is a good example. Mask dance is traditional performance that strongly reveals sociality of the general public. This study focused on the points that the studies on Gangryeong mask dance which is one of Haeseo mask dance in these ones have been insufficiently done compared to Bongsan mask dance despite its values and meaning have been well preserved. It may be thought that social communication between the public is insufficient in Gangryeong because it is isolated as the comparative remote area of Hwanghaedo. But actually, if Gangryeon mask dance is examined, it has found that its social function is remarkably emphasized. So the purpose of this study is to shed new light on Gangryeong's value in the social aspect. For the present research, the origin of mask dance, concept of expression, historical background of late Josun, and social flow of Gangryeong mask dance were studied as well as the origin, transmission, characteristics of the masks, costume, and dance, and the unique exaggeration. In addition, the study included the theatrical link between dance and humorous dialogue, and analysis of the expressions in Ganryeong mask dance by dividing them into satirical, suggestive, and artistic aspects. Furthermore, based on these things, the study then tried to find Gangryeong mask dance’s functional role in criticism, healing, and communication through the social expression during the late Josun. Accordingly, the social roles of Gangryeong mask dance found in its social expression are as follows: First, the masks, humor, and behavior of the characters show corrupt monk, vulgar high class people, their servants who subtly make fun of them, poor people and the irony of feudal system, which relieved the conflict of class system felt by the common people in late Josun. Second, the description of religious action through ghost buster mask, jangsam dance, jaemuldaigam-rich people, and suggestive expression to repel the misfortune, by comporting spirit exorcism and the like, wish for fortune from God, and lead the vindictive spirits to heaven rediscovered the fundamental function of mask dance as a venue for healing and resurgence. Third, through mokjung mask and jangsam dance that showed criticism of monks; masks, humorous dialogues, and group dance that reveal the conflict between the nobility and servants; and the costume, song, and artistic expression of comporting exorcism of Miyal grandmother, miyal grandfather, and mistress yongsansamgejip display the criticism of the overall social problems and purify the emotion to lead to reconciliation, harmony and communication. While today’s human communication is focused on mass media , the traditional culture is fading away and, except for the major cultural assets, largely ignored. As so much of intangible artistic heritage could disappear due to our indifference, it is hoped that this study will attempt to provide a social data for Gangryeong mask dance and contribute to understanding it as a new artistic genre and to the proper function of the society.
