트와일라 타프(Twyla Tharp)의 작품에 나타난 에코 페미니즘 특성에 관한 연구

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the eco-feminism in Twyla Tharp's work, 「The Catherine Wheel」 and to shine a spotlight on the historic-cultural role and significance of dance art which realizes the subjective and independent female image. As the method of study, leading research and criticism, videos, interviews and biography of Twyla Tharp were referred based on the literature research. Especially, the 『Eco-feminism ideology in 21st century』 by Rosemarie Tong and 『The Collaborative Habit』 as the biography of Twyla Tharp, and the image interview of Twyla Tharp about 「The Catherine Wheel」 provided the framework of the basic understanding for this study. In the course of the study, a variety of zeitgeist of eco-feminism as the theoretical basic premise and the various eco-feminism features in 20th century modern dance as the contemporary of Twyla Tharp were analyzed in addition to the authentic analysis tasks. Based on this, the conclusion that eco-feminism corresponds with Twyla Tharp's work, 「The Catherine Wheel」 most was drawn, and community between the eco-feminism and 「The Catherine Wheel」 was found so the features were analyzed. In other words, the main features found in this study by association between 「The Catherine Wheel」 and eco-feminism are as follows. First, the pursuit as monism as the horizontal equality relationship but dualism forming the vertical-class relationship, second, the mystical feminism orienting recovery of a peaceful female God but the male God of war and destruction, third, the pursuit of establishment of female’s economic identity against the male who suppressed the women's labor force by exploiting and subordinating it economically, finally, the pursuit of the construction of the new utopia for all organisms such as natural and human can live together in harmony and balance through stylizing the female principle can be summarized. Therefore, this study revealed the reality of many women collapsed in the modern home and it sought the women's liberation by analyzing Twyla Tharp's work, 「The Catherine Wheel」 in the eco-feminism view. In addition, this study is expected to be a small help for the dancers to express the awareness about sexuality and to explore discussion about the creative activity which raises the image of subjective women, and the dance art is expected to join in the movement of feminism in abroad sense so that the artistic value and social impact of dance can be extended.;본 논문은 트와일라 타프의 작품 「캐서린 휠」에 나타난 에코 페미니즘 특성을 분석하여 주체적이고 독립적인 여성 이미지를 구현하는 무용 예술이 갖는 문화사적 역할과 의의를 조명하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구의 방법은 문헌연구를 중심으로 선행연구와 비평, 비디오, 인터뷰, 그리고 타프의 자서전을 참고로 하였다. 특히 로즈마리통의 『21세기 페미니즘 사상』과 타프의 자서전인『여럿이 한 호흡』그리고「캐서린 휠」에 대한 타프의 영상인터뷰가 본 논문을 연구하는데 기본적인 이해의 틀을 제공하였다. 연구의 과정은 본격적인 분석 작업에 앞서 이론적 기본 전제인 페미니즘의 다양한 사조와 타프와 동시대인 20세기 현대무용에 나타난 다양한 페미니즘 특징을 분석하였다. 이를 토대로 에코 페미니즘이 타프의 작품 「캐서린 휠」과 가장 부합한다는 결론을 도출하였고 에코 페미니즘과 「캐서린 휠」사이의 공통점을 찾아내어 그 특징을 분석하였다. 즉「캐서린 휠」과 에코 페미니즘 사이의 연관성을 찾아 발견한 본 논문의 주요 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수직적 계급관계를 형성하는 이원론이 아닌 수평적 평등관계인 일원론으로의 추구, 두 번째로 전쟁과 파괴의 남성 신이 아닌 평화로운 여성 신의 회복을 지향하는 신화적 여성론, 세 번째로 여성의 노동력을 착취하여 경제적으로 종속시켜 억압한 남성에 대항하여 여성의 경제적 주체성 확립 추구, 마지막으로 여성원리의 형상화를 통해 모든 생물체와 자연, 인간이 공생하는 조화와 균형을 이룬 신 유토피아 건설을 추구한 점으로 요약할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 트와일라 타프의 작품 「캐서린 휠」을 에코 페미니즘 시각으로 분석함으로써 현대 가정에서 붕괴하는 많은 여성들의 현실을 폭로하고 여성 해방을 추구하였다. 또한 무용인들이 성에 대한 인식을 표명하고 주체적 여성의 이미지를 부각시키는 창작활동에 대한 논의의 촉발에 본 연구가 작은 도움이 되길 바라며 무용예술이 광의의 여권주의 운동에 동참하여 무용의 예술적 가치와 사회적 영향력이 확산되기를 기대해본다.
