This paper analyzes both traditional and romantic elements found in Cantus Missae Op. 109, first piece of Josef Gabriel Rheinberger (1839-1901) after he obtained the rank of court conductor of Munich royal chapel in 1878, from aspects of melody, structure, harmony, treatment of lyrics, and double choir relationship. Traditional elements herein refer to traditions of church music that employ Gregorian melodies, Palestrina style and polychoral style of the Venetian school which was popularly seen from the end of the 16th century to the early 17th century, whereas romantic elements herein refer to the new style of choral music which newly emerged in the 19th century such as variations of musical format, free melodic treatment of dissonance, musical contrasts, chromatic modulations and radical and subjective progression of rhythms. Prior to this, studies on traditional and romantic elements exhibited in the choral music of the 19th century and style there of were conducted to understand the theoretical background and on factors that had impact on the revival of church music such as the Cecilian movement. Cantus Missae Op. 109, an unaccompanied mass for two four-part choirs, although colorfully exhibits strong liturgical flavor, a spectrum of inner feelings are expressed in an unrestricted manner by adding some romantic elements to the melodies which is marked by the composed but straight-forward Palestrina style. Also, structurally, while dominantly leveraging the traditional three part style, variations were applied in line with composition of melodies and interpretations of lyrics. Homophonically, consonance that produces good resonance were used, illustrating traditional features of church music which is characterized by its very clean and radiant style, but chromaticism were often exhibited to stress musical expressions and lyrical meanings. Also, while polyphonic voices make it difficult to deliver key lyrical messages due to overlaps, Rheinberger’s appropriate arrangement of voices and lyrics enabled clear communication of both lyrics and melodies. When lyrics are lengthy and wordy, two choirs alternatively chant short phrases containing different lyrics in a harmonic and vertical structure of parts to facilitate the flow of melodies and to accurately deliver the message of lyrics. Long-held notes were used to convey the dignity and grandeur and to add a strong liturgical color while rhythms and syncopations were used according to the cadence and stress to accommodate the linguistic flow of the lyrics. One of the characteristics of traditional double choir involves exchange of dialogue by the two to illustrate convergence of sounds. However, this particular piece is marked by the fact that two choirs sing from equal position as a stand-alone instead of being a subordinate or secondary to one another.-
