Sergei Prokofiev was a composer who created masterpieces in many genres including a concerto, symphony, solo, ballet and film music with his own unique musical style in the early 20th century. Especially, he put forth his whole energy to the piano music and added a new potential to the piano using the percussion expression. As the main topic of this study, Sarcasms, Op. 17 is one of his early representative works, showing the various and experimental techniques characteristic of his early works. He classified his musical characteristics into 5 elements of Classical, Modern, Toccata, Lyrical and Grotesque. In the 1st piece, using a cyclic form, unity of the entire is expressed properly, and sections using each element are divided definitely. In the part of Toccata, dissonance and repetitive rhythm are used frequently, characteristic of contrary motion. In the part of Lyrical, it shows long melody using a Lydian Mode over several bars. Among Sarcasms, the 2nd piece expresses a modern element most adequately. Throughout the piece, certain rhythm of and arpeggio are used but dynamics and speed changing every moment create a free atmosphere. In the 3rd piece, the ostinato technique, his favorite when expressing the element of Toccata, is used without pause. In this piece, the part of Lyrical also has a clearly divided section within the piece. It shows humor of Prokofiev's own in that two different modes of tonality are used, in other hands, the right hand with f#minor and the left with b♭minor with the transformed chromatic scale. The 4th piece, well matched with the expression mark of Smanioso(like crazy), even scale gives feeling of the Grotesque element through a sharp timbre sounding like percussion instruments. Also, it shows a Classical element rarely discovered in this piece through frequent use of church modes. The 5th piece shows multiple elements most often. Especially, the element of Toccata repeating the same harmonic rhythm of eighth note is most outstanding. Like these above, Sarcasms, op. 17 by Prokofiev is a work having excellent research value in that it reflects the early composition tendency of the composer most distinctly.;세르게이 프로코피에프는 20세기 초에 자신만의 독자적인 음악 양식으로 협주곡, 교향곡, 독주곡, 발레음악, 영화음악 등 수많은 장르에서 걸작을 배출해 낸 작곡가이다.
