Abstract
Unlike most of his contemporaries, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756-1791), one of the greatest composers of the Classical period, preferred the organ to the piano. However, he has written very few organ works. This was partly because organ playing in the Classical period was usually based on improvisation and not often published. It was also because organ music was becoming less and less popular compared to other sorts of instrumental music. Moreover, because Mozart only composed commissioned works due to his financial hardship, there were not many chances for him to compose organ music. Organ pieces by Mozart known to exist include seventeen church sonatas, three compositions for the mechanical automatic organ(K.594, 608, 616), and several transcriptions for the organ of the works originally written for other instruments. The three works for the mechanical automatic organ show both Baroque style techniques and the musical quality of the Classical period, and although written for a musical clock, K.594 and K.608 are large scale works suitable for playing on a large organ. Among the three compositions, K.594 will be analyzed in this thesis. The purpose of this study is to comprehend the characteristic of Mozart's organ music and to encourage profound performance of the work. Among the three works for the mechanical automatic organ, K.594 was the first to be written. It consists of three movements, i.e. Adagio, Allegro, and Adagio, and was composed as a funeral music to commemorate General Laudon's death. The first Adagio is a Prelude. The second movement, Allegro, is in sonata form. The Allegro movement does not have any particular climax, and with its transition section constructed through the presentation and sequence of a motive, it shows fast and neat flow characteristic of the composer's music. The last Adagio uses varied phrase lengths to create a solemn and heavy atmosphere suitable for a funeral music. The three works, originally composed for the mechanical automatic organ, have many parts which are very difficult for an organist to play. For instance, some passages have to be played on a lower or higher register and those passages which are too complicated or have too many embellishments are virtually impossible to play. Nevertheless, as the works started to be arranged for the organ and republished by several editors, they gradually gained legitimacy as pieces for solo pipe organ. None of Mozart's works for solo organ are extant today. However, the author of this thesis wishes that this analysis of K.594, a piece for mechanical automatic organ, will help to interpret and perform the organ music of Mozart, a representative organ music composer of the Classical period.
