Recent empirical studies found that offspring sex ratio in birds can be adaptively adjusted with extrinsic factors such as environmental conditions, as well as intrinsic factors such as parental quality and condition. The Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica) in Korea shows a wide variation in breeding time and thus local weather conditions that the breeders experience vary. I investigated offspring sex ratios at hatching and fledging and differential mortality of nestlings over the 4 years in a population of Black-billed magpies, in an attempt to explain patterns of offspring sex ratio as function of local weather conditions such as average temperature, tendency of temperature variation and average precipitation. I employed statistical model searching based on information criteria. My results show that more sons were produced at hatching when temperature was higher in early pre-laying period. On the other hand, sex ratio at fledging was shaped by precipitation in early pre-laying period, with wetter pre-laying period producing more daughters at fledging. Although the two weather variables were highly correlated, the pattern at hatching and fledging was opposite. It seems that a steep temperature increase during pre-laying period favors survival of female nestlings, and this differential survival produces the reverse pattern of sex ratio at fledging. Although the reason is unclear, I hypothesized that mismatch between predicted and actual timing of food abundance, due to the steep temperature increase, decreases the survival of male nestlings since they are larger and more susceptible to food shortage. Pre-laying stage is important for sex ratio adjustment in magpies by shaping the feeding environment for females to prepare breeding. However, due to correlation among weather variables and its influence on sex-specific survival, the pattern of sex ratio adjustment made at hatching may be reversed at fledging. My results suggest that magpies can facultatively adjust their offspring sex ratio depending on the local weather.;조류의 자손 성비는 부모의 질과 같은 내재성 요인에 따라 조절될 수 있는 것과 같이, 환경 조건과 같은 외적 요인에 따라서도 적응적으로 조절될 수 있음이 최근 연구 결과들을 통해 발표되었다.
