Living organisms may maintain homeostasis against changes in environmental conditions, and a disturbed state of homeostasis is known as a stress. Sound acts as a stressor in many organisms. The sound stress may cause various behavioral and physiological changes such as increase of tension, avoidance reactions, and suppression of feeding and reproductive activities. In this study, I investigated the effects of acoustic stimuli on the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer). A preliminary study revealed that M. persicae tended to feed consistently and regularly within a given stage. Such a consistent behavior may reflect a state of homeostasis, and thus a change in the feeding behavior may indicate a state of stress. To test whether the acoustic stimulus can act as a stressor in the green peach aphid, I conducted the playback and electrical penetration graph (EPG) experiments. Acoustic stimuli with a combination of five frequency and three intensity levels were used in the playback experiment. Under all acoustic stimuli, honey dew production (HDP) that may indicate a state of feeding occurred less often, and moving (MV) that did not involve feeding occurred more often and longer. The results of two-way multivariate ANOVA showed that the stimulus frequency was a significant factor for variation in aphid behaviors in the playback experiment. However, there was no intensity effect on aphid’s behavior. In the EPG experiment in which specific stages of feeding activity can be determined, the feeding phase decreased and non-feeding phases such as no penetration (NP), pathway, and probing increased in treatment groups. Moreover, the feeding phase was frequently stopped and lasted only for short durations in the treatment groups. The results of the playback and EPG experiments demonstrated that the acoustic stimuli were effective in inducing feeding suppression in this species. Thus, the acoustic stimuli may be a stressor in the green peach aphid. Furthermore, the behavioral model that I used in this study may be used to assess the effect of various stressors in aphids.;대부분 생물들은 외부 환경으로부터 항상성을 유지하며, 이것이 깨어진 상태를 스트레스라 정의한다.
