소통의 부재에 따른 소외된 자아 표현

Abstract

오늘날 인간은 끊임없이 변화하는 현대 사회의 소용돌이 속에서 극도의 개인화, 이기화 현상으로 인해 인간성과 자아정체성을 상실한 비극적인 상황에 처해있다. 이는 과학기술의 발달로 나타난 물질적 풍요와 도시의 거대화에 따른 결과인데, 과학의 발전 속도가 가속화됨에 따라 인간소외 현상은 더욱 심각한 사회문제로 제기되고 있다. 현대 사회가 점점 거대해질수록 개인은 점점 더 큰 상실감과 고립감을 느끼게 되는 것이다. 이러한 현상 속에서 본인은 변화의 흐름에서 뒤처져 안정성을 상실한 사회 구성원의 대표로서 작품에 등장한다. 현대사회의 일원으로서 본인이 속한 사회 혹은 연관성이 있었던 타인과의 단절을 통해 겪게 된 고독과 소외감을 주관적인 자기 고백의 성격으로 작품을 통해 드러내고자 한 것이다. 특징적인 사물이나 환경 등의 대상에 의미를 부여하여 화면에 배치하고, 도태되어 혼란을 겪는 현대인을 어린아이의 모습으로 형상화된 자아에 투영하여 표현하였다. 또한 화면 안에서 단절된 대상과 어린아이로 표현된 자아의 소통을 구상하여 본질적으로는 '나'와 '외부 세계'의 소통을 이루려는 시도를 반복함으로써 인간 소외로 인한 상처를 치유 받고자 하였다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 작업 주제의 시발점이 되는 현대사회의 특징과 인간 소외 현상의 원인을 살펴보고, 현 시대 속에서 소통의 부재를 경험한 본인이 상처를 치유하고 사회와 소통하기 위해 새롭게 모색한 방법들이 어떠한 이미지로 표현되었는지 연구하였다. 성공한 사회인으로 대우 받지도, 보편적인 사회인의 모습으로 융화되지도 못하였던 본인의 불완전한 정서가 투영된 작업 내용을 철학적, 미학적 학술 근거를 토대로 폭 넓게 이해함으로써, 앞으로 보다 발전적인 작업 방향을 모색하는데 연구의 목적을 두었다. 구체적인 연구 방안으로 먼저 이론적 연구를 통하여 현대 사회의 특징과 이에 따른 인간 소외 현상을 살펴보았다. 개개인의 개성을 존중하기보다 사회에 잘 적응하는 ?사회적 인간?을 필요로 하는 현대사회를 과학 기술의 발전에 따른 소비사회, 다원주의사회, 정보화 사회의 세 가지 특징으로 설명하였다. 그 과정에서 사회적 존재로서의 인간이 겪게 된 인간 소외문제에 대해 이해하고 그 구체적 유형에 대해 분석하였다. 또한 인간소외를 작업 주제로 선택한 대표적 작가의 작품을 제시하고 이를 분석함으로써 본인 작업 주제의 선택 동기를 설명하고자 하였다. 조형적 연구의 방법으로는 사회와의 소통 부재라는 작품의 주제에 결부하여 반복적으로 등장하는 사물의 상징성에 대해 분석하고, 어린아이로 선택된 자아의 모습을 피터팬 증후군의 특징을 참조하여 그 원인을 분석하였다. 또한 초기 작품이 소외된 상처 자체를 드러내는 것에 머물렀다면 최근 작품에 와서는 소외의 상황을 극복하고 사회와 상호소통을 이루기 위해 노력하는 경향을 보이는 점에 주목하여 주제 변화에 따른 본인의 상처 치유 과정을 살펴보았다. 본인의 작품에서 동일하게 등장하는 밤이라는 배경이 주는 시간적 의미에 대하여 보편적인 어둠의 의미와 비교하며 분석하였다. 또한 검은 분채, 먹과 은분으로 한정된 색채의 운용에 대하여 살펴보고 흰 종이를 한 치의 틈도 없이 검게 물들이는 과정과 그 위에 극도로 절제된 색채의 표현을 통하여 본인의 내면을 표현한 과정을 연구 분석하였다. 본인의 작업에서 등장하는 검은 빈 공간의 의미에 대하여 전통적 의미의 여백과 비교하며 설명하였다. 마지막으로 본인 작품의 개별적인 분석을 통하여 공통적으로 사회와의 소통을 희망하며 이루어낸 각각의 작업들이 가지는 창작 동기를 밝히고 선택된 사물의 상징성과 구체적 표현방식에 대해 서술하였다. 또한 완성 작업에 대한 개별적인 분석을 통하여 작업에 대한 조형언어를 정립하고자 하였다.;Today, human beings are facing a tremendous tragedy of dehumanization and the loss of self due to the extreme individualization and selfishness amid the turmoil of constantly changing modern society. This is an end result of material abundance and rapid urbanization caused by the advancement of science and technology. In fact, as scientific progress accelerates, human alienation is becoming a more serious social problem. In other words, as our modern society develops, individuals increasingly feel more lost and isolated. Given these social phenomena, my own reflection appears in the work as a representation of the members of the society who fell behind and lost stability. I meant the work to be a self-confession as well as an expression of loneliness and isolation I had experienced in consequence of the separation from the community or others. I attached meanings to distinguishing objects, background and etc and arranged them on a Korean paper. I also depicted modern people, who were left behind and confused, through the self reflected in the image of a child. In addition, envisioning the communication between the self pictured as a child and the separated objects within the frame and fundamentally attempting to relate ‘I’ to ‘the outside world’, I sought to heal the wounds caused by isolation. In this thesis, I first probed the characteristics of modern society and the causes of human alienation as they provided the foundation of my work. Secondly I studied how the images of the newly devised ways of communicating with society and of healing the mental damages the self had received from a lack of communication in this modern society were expressed. The content of the work is a reflection of the insecurity of my own ego that was neither well-treated as a successful member of the society nor accepted as an ordinary member of it. The purpose of this study was to understand the work in depth from philosophical and aesthetic perspectives to formulate more progressive plans for future works. As to the detail methods of analysis, I first took a theoretical approach to look at the characteristics of modern society and its resulting human alienation. Specifically, I concentrated on three traits ­ a consumer society, a pluralist society and an information-oriented society ­ originated from scientific advancement to explain our modern society that requires one to become a ‘conforming social being’ rather than respects individuality. In the process, I attempted to understand the problems of human alienation that social beings face and examined the specific patterns of separation. I also presented the works of several representative artists who chose human alienation as the main theme. I subsequently investigated their pieces to better explain my motives behind the chosen topic. Regarding the methods used to study the formative features, I analyzed the symbolic meanings of the continually appearing objects associated with the main theme, the lack of communication in human society. I then referred to the symptoms of Peter Pan Syndrome to look for a possible explanation for choosing the image of a child as a reflection of the self. Furthermore, noting my earlier works were limited to exposing the wound itself done by alienation while the recent works were more focused on overcoming isolation and achieving mutual communication in society, I re-examined my own healing process in relation to such changes of the theme. I also studied the nocturnal setting that were uniformly present in my works and compared its implication with the broad sense of darkness. In addition, I investigated the restraint use of colors limited to black mixed glaze, Chinese ink and powdered silver, as well as the process of painting the whole white paper black without leaving a single spot and expressing my own inner side using exceedingly minimal colors. I then explained the meaning of black blank space and contrasted it to the traditional idea of blank space. Lastly, through an analysis of each individual work, I revealed the motive behind each piece completed with the common desire of communicating with society. I also described the symbolic meanings and the specific modes of expression of the chosen objects. In addition, I made an effort to establish artistic language through individual investigation of each completed piece.
