Abstract
The content of textbooks has a direct effect on the achievement of education and carries great influence on education. In addition, it is very meaningful to compare textbooks of Korea and America in order to enhance educational competitiveness of the country and to configure music class that can maximize the efficiency of learning, because curriculum in Korea from ancient times constantly came under the influence of the America. For these reasons, the purpose of this study is to find differences between textbooks of both countries, understand the merits and demerits of Korean textbook, and explore alternatives to remedy shortcomings. This study deals with textbooks of the first year of middle school which are considered to be the same step with 7th grade in America, and regarded to be important as the first step of secondary education. This study analyzes Korea’s 2007 revised version of middle school music curriculum, and researches National Standards of Music Education and California Content Standards of America, in addition, investigates textbook publication-adoption system to issue qualified textbooks in both countries. For the materials of this study, I select Sekwang Music and Hyundae Music textbook of the first year of middle school in Korea, and Spotlight on Music and Making Music textbook of 7th grade in America. The results of comparison are as follows: In writing-publication system, Korea uses ‘Government-issued textbook system’, ‘Textbook authorization system’, ‘Textbook adoption system’, and ‘Free-issued textbook system’, and America uses ‘Statewide adoption system’, ‘Local adoption system’. Korea has numerous authorized textbooks which are selected by the individual schools resulting in heavy work load for teachers. There is a difference in terms of the required completion time of music education. In the case of Korea, common curriculum must be applied up to the first year of high school. On the other hand, for America, music is designated as a required subject by the 6th grade, which means that option-based curriculum is more longer than that of Korea. Learning activities and assessments of singing are given a lot of weight in music subject in Korea. On the other hand, as American textbook provide a great number of sound sources to every contents, listening is a greater part of music subject. Korean textbooks explain their content and provide materials in simple and implicit languages so that students aren’t likely to understand them quickly. American textbooks, however, describe the content in detail. Moreover, teachers and students take advantages of the web site of the textbook. From the results above, I propose as follows: Firstly, the number of authorized textbooks should be limited and textbooks need to be selected by the designated district not by individual schools. For the qualified textbooks, professional publishers and authors are required to be trained and developed. Secondly, the contents and activities should be allocated properly with regard to students’ interests. It is needed to reduce the portion of singing which has been overly weighted as the primary activities. Teachers should be equipped with the ability to use various musical instruments in order for students to have opportunities to learn the instruments with national supports. Third, all the songs in textbooks should be provided in CD so that students can easily listen to the songs, which lets them have extended musical experience and satisfies their intellectual curiosity. Lastly, students should be actively encouraged in self-directed learning. Detailed explanation would be of benefit in that elaborated textbooks enable students to learn autonomously. Using web sites of textbooks also can be the tool for their learning with various information they need in time.;교과서의 학습내용은 교육의 성과에 직접적인 영향을 미치며, 교육에서 절대적인 의미와 영향력을 발휘한다.
