Abstract
Under the influence of feminism and equal opportunities for education, women’s chances of advancing in society have drastically increased, allowing women to get actively engaged in self-improvement. But as these women experience pregnancy and childbirth, through the "bodily experience" they had never undergone before, they begin to see themselves in a different way. Until now, women’s bodies that experienced childbirth have been discussed only in terms of medical discourses or reproductive functions. Not only that, self-improvement frenzy, consumption-obsessed culture, and mass media of modern society put their bodies under much pressure, making them suffer conflict and tension repetitively. Even more, in the society that admiresbeautiful and young bodies, women who experienced childbirth, who fall short of the "ideal body" image, often find themselves expelled to the margin. Under these situations, women’s body management does not just cause changes to their bodies, but also reconstruct women’s self, and during the process, cultural meaning and space imposed on women are dismantled and rearranged. This study addresses 1) under which conditions women experience new identities as they practice body management, 2) in which ways they perceive their body management experiences, and 3) how their previous attempts to improve their bodies take on a new meaning after childbirth. The conclusions of this study are as follows: 1. Women in 30s are recognized as capable agentsand even called "Gold Miss," but at the same time the constant pressure from the society inflicted on their age and the frustration and conflict they suffer in the labor market force them to reconsider their position in the society. With the media and the market encouraging women to redesign their life as "Gold Mom," those who gave birth get to form new images about their own bodies and themselves, which lead to the desire to improve their bodies. 2. After giving birth, women undergo experiences they had never expected, and this encounter provideswomen with new perspective on the relations surrounding their bodies. Through various roles they play with bodies, they begin to realize their realities and experience the change of their position. Under given circumstances, women practice body management in their own ways, and for those who gave birth, the care of body is more than just causing changes to their bodies: It serves to construct another desire and another self. 3. While practicing body management, women realize how their bodies conflict with dominant social ideologies and their various roles. Women’s willingness to manage their bodies is not the result of the reckless lookism or the judgment women inflicts on themselves based on the patriarchal perspective. Their body management gives them opportunities to recognize what kind of resources they can get through this act, who they are in the context of social relations, and where they are in what conditions. Through these experiences, women in their 30s reconstruct their age, their experience of childbirth, and their identities. What distinguishes this study from others is that it presents bodily experience as the analysis frame of a feminist study. Seeing bodily experience as a critical place where women’s self and subjectivity are established means that body is understood as part of agency, awareness, and reflection. This perspective makes it possible to explore ways in which the gender ideology is imprinted on and also conflicts with the body. Women’s body after childbirth turns into the field of productivity, and newly transformed body and new awareness are likely to help increase women’s capabilities. By focusing on women turning their bodies into the field of new possibilities, this study tried to show that reconstruction of self based on the body changes expands the breadth of meaning regarding women.;본 연구는 평등한 교육과 페미니즘의 영향으로 여성들의 사회적 진출이 활발해진 사회적 배경 속에서 자기계발에 적극적이었던 여성들이 임신과 출산을 하면서 이전에는 경험하지 못했던 ‘몸의 경험’을 통해 다른 방식으로 자신을 인식하는데서 출발한다.
