The objective of this study was to understand the music of Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), the famous nineteenth-century German Romantic composer, by studying his "Eleven Chorale Preludes Op.122". The eleven chorale preludes express the meaning of each chorale text using various musical techniques. Accordingly, in this study, the eleven chorale preludes are analyzed, and the word painting used to express the texts is discussed as well. Prior to the analysis of the preludes, a definition of word painting and a brief summary of the word painting techniques from the Renaissance to the Romantic period that influenced Brahms is given, and the life of Brahms and his connection with organ music is discussed. Even from the ancient Classic era, various theories, including the Ethos theory, stated that music can evoke various emotions from the listener according to how it is composed. After this era, music was not simply for listening and enjoying, but for conveying to the listener through music something that the composer wants to express. Such an expressive technique is called 'Word-painting'. 'Word-painting' is the expression of words, ideas, and concepts through musical symbols such as line, harmony, rhythm, color, and dynamics, and visual symbols such as notes, style, structure, selection of instruments, selection of performers, etc. 'Word painting' helps the listener to understand what the composer is trying to convey. 'Word painting' was expressed in the Renaissance era through 'Musica Reservata' and 'Madrigalism', and was realized in the Baroque era by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) and his 'second practice' and 'doctrine of the affections'. In the Classical era, word painting was used to express mainly human expressions through 'emotions and variety (Empfindsame)', and in the Romantic era, various, more specific factors were applied to music in a form called 'program music‘ where the composer could express emotions, concepts, and poetry freely. Especially, in instrumental program music where texts are not directly added to the music but titles or subtitles or stories or Bible verses are expressed in music, a word painting technique was developed where texts are not directly added to the music, but the hidden meaning in these various ways are symbolically expressed. Although Brahms, as a composer active as German romantic music was reaching its peak, was influenced by Romanticism, he composed rather conservative works which combined classic style with a romantic spirit because of the influence of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). During the nineteenth century, studies on the human mind were intensely being carried out, and death became an important motif. Brahms' organ works, which were composed in two periods of mental exhaustion, deal with many concepts related to death. Even in the four early organ works the frequent use of the chromatic scale demonstrates Brahm's awareness of a dark and gloomy death. The eleven chorale preludes, which belong to Brahms' fnal years, were composed with the awareness of his own impending death following the recent death of Clara Schumann (1819-1896), and also combine contrapuntal techniques, a composing technique of the Baroque era, with a romantic spirit. The eleven works can be divided into imitative chorale preludes (Nos. 1, 3, 7, 11) and ornamented chorale preludes (Nos. 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10), each work being distinguished by treatment of each separate verse in the chorale line proceeding through various techniques. Various musical techniques have been used to convey the meaning of the chorale texts. In Particular, use of the chromatic scale, sequence, echoes, and various rhythms are used to express the fear of death, hesitance, and the joy of eternal life in heaven. Although Brahms wrote only a small number of organ works compared to his other instrumental works, in contrast to other organ composers of his day, he used restrained classic and baroque techniques rather than romantic and vivid techniques. In addition, the eleven chorale preludes are works which use various word painting techniques to express Brahms' deep emotions concerning his imminent death.-
