이수영의 "한대의 바이올린과 전자 사운드를 위한 Ganges"(2001), 분석

Abstract

전자(電子)의 요소가 실무나 학문의 영역에서 커다란 업적을 이루고 있는 오늘날, 흔히 일반 사람들은 전자음악이라면 컴퓨터 내지의 전자 두뇌로 만들어지는 음악으로서 받아들이는 경향이 있다. 실제로 컴퓨터 음악(computer-music)도 일종의 전자 음악에 틀림이 없으며, 이미 미국의 벨 연구소, 서독 뮌헨의 지멘스 회사 제작의 기기, 거기다 스웨덴의 스톡홀름에서 컴퓨터 음악(computer-music)의 실시가 진행 중이며 이것이 오늘날의 전자 음악의 주류를 이루고 있다. 그러나 오늘날, 음악계에서 전자 음악이라고 흔히 불리는 것은 음원(音源)을 얻는다는 것과 그것을 변형·중합(重合)시키거나 재생시킴에 있어서 진공관이나 트랜지스터를 사용한 전자적 회로(回路)를 이용함에 불과하다. 본 연구는 이러한 전자적 개념으로 인도의 단편적 사상을 표현한 본인의 작품 “갠지즈(Ganges)"를 분석한 것이다. 우리가 인도에 대해 알고 있는 사실은 매우 단편적이거나 심지어는 부정확한 사실들도 있다. 불교와 고행자의 나라. 가난한 나라, 그러나 가난이 더 이상 가난과 불행으로 취급되지 않는 나라, 그들이 행하는 평범한 일마저 신비라는 이름으로 해석될 수 있는 나라, 세계 4대 문명의 발상지 중 하나, 등등 (대부분의) 우리는 그 이상의 범위를 사실 넘어서지 못한다. 그러나 인도는 매우 흥미롭다. 특히 고대부터 수많은 인종들의 각축장이었으며, 아리아인 이전의 선주민, 인도 아리아인, 그리스인, 스키타이인, 훈족, 터키인, 몽고인에 이르기까지 그들은 저마다 인도를 자신들의 영토로 만들기 위해 노력했다. 그들 각각의 인종은 자신들의 사회제도, 예술과 건축술 그리고 문학 등을 인도 땅에 심어 놓았다. 이처럼 한 민족이 물러가고 그 자리를 다른 민족이 차지하는 순환이 반복되면서 인도는 자연히 다른 어느 나라에서도 볼 수 없는 힌두이즘이라는 독특한 문화를 창출하게 되었다. 본 곡은 전자적 요소로 이루어진 A부분과 어쿠스틱(acoustic) 요소로 이루어진 B부분이 대조적으로 나타나는데, A부분은 브라만 계급을, B부분은 수드라 계급을 상징하며 오염과 정을 완전5도를 중심음정으로 하여 분리하였다. 본 곡을 통하여 전자 음의 기법에만 치중하기보다 어쿠스틱 악기와 대조시켜 힌두 문화의 본질을 이해하고자 노력하였다.;Indians find it glorious to take a bath in the Ganges and hope the ashes from their dead bodies would be thrown into the river. If you go to the river in person, you cant miss people throwing the ashes from dead bodies into the river after burning dead bodies at the near incinerator. You would also see some people doing their laundry with all the soap foams flowing into the river. All of these activities are the major culprits for the severe pollution of the river. Nevertheless, every year, hundreds of thousands of people flock to the Ganges to take a bath or at least dip their feet in the river. This is because Indians think that the Ganges is totally different from other rivers. They believe that the Ganges is water of life and holy water . The Ganges was a river in heaven in the first place. Flowing from the toes of Vishnu, the Ganges was a river offering abundance to every corner of the heaven. One day, a severe drought hit the earth, and one of the saints who felt sorry about the disaster, did the penance and finally got the permission from God to take the river down to earth. However, if the huge river falls directly to the earth, everything on the earth would have been totally destroyed. Knowing this, Shiva cut the big river in small streams and had them fall through his hair to the earth. In this view, the Ganges is Shivas hair and a holy place where Shiva take a bath and gets lost in meditation. Thats why the Ganges is considered as holy water by Indians. This music is divided into two parts based upon the Caste System in India. In the music, Cleanness in the A part is in a stark contrast to Contamination in the B part. This is music has been composed using the fundamental Indian scale of raga and grama. The harmonization of electronic and acoustic sounds is also making this music more unique. The future task is to create more diverse and systematic work using electronic sounds.
