Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate marital stability as a function of the couple’s patterns of differentiation of self and family-of-origin emotional health. A theoretical framework for the purpose of this study was based on Bowen’s family system theory. The Family-of-Origin Scale, the Marital Satisfaction Scale, and Marital Instability Index were used for the measurements. Also the differentiation of self made by the author was used to measured the couple’s differentiation of self. The subjects were 229 couples who have been married for 10 years or less, living in Seoul, and whose father or mother is still alive. SAS program was used for data analysis, and the data were verified by frequency, oneway ANOVA, simple regression, correlation analysis, multiple regression. The main results of this study were summarized as follows; 1. The couples which both husband and wife have high differentiation of self showed the highest marital satisfaction and marital stability. On the other hand, the couples which both husband and wife have low differentiation of self reported the lowest marital satisfaction and marital stability. 2. In general, differentiation of self more impact on both men’s marital satisfaction and marital stability than women’s. Husband’s intrapsychic differentiation, triangles and emotional cutoff with parents affected on both his marital satisfaction and marital stability. And wife’s emotional cutoff with parents and intrapsychic differentiation affected on her marital satisfaction, whereas wife’s emotional cutoff with parents affected on her marital stability. 3. The couples which both husband and wife are from highly healthy family-of-origin were found to have the highest marital satisfaction and marital stability. In contrast, the couples which both husband and wife are from highly unhealthy family-of-origin showed the lowest marital satisfaction and marital stability. 4. Family-of-origin emotional health had more impact on men’s marital satisfaction than women’s, whereas it had more impact on women’s marital stability than men’s. 5. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that the married status of husband’s parents, the couple’s differentiation of self and marital satisfaction were the most significant variables predicting husband’s marital stability, whereas wife’s differentiation of self and marital satisfaction were the predictable variables for wife’s marital stability. This study verified that Bowen’s family system theory which family dysfunction is transmitted to the next generation can be applied to general family group. The implications of the study was discussed.
